Pre holiday injury paranoia ...

Is it just me that suffers from this?

Still have 10 days till I go away but am now refraining from some ski-ing on an indoor slope (more to avoid being injured than causing myself any damage though that's not to say I'd be above doing that either lol :D) and am also avoiding playing in my regular 5 a-side matches for fear of being injured before the holiday arrives! :)

Absolute paranoia!

Re:Pre holiday injury paranoia ...

I get this too and it does seem to make accidents all the more likely to happen.

Against my better judgement, I took my normally sensible horse out for a ride (OH tried to talk me out of it!) the day before I went skiing this year and lo and behold he was a complete idiot in the middle of a busy dual carriage way. I'm sure he knew this would be the worst possible time for me to come off, though threats to sell him to the glue factory eventually did the trick in making him behave!
He did the same thing last year too, only then it was bucking, prancing and trying to jump the speed bumps in the road

Re:Pre holiday injury paranoia ...

Pardon my total ignorance of all things to do with horse riding but could he perhaps have been responding to any change in the way you were riding i.e. if you were holding back a bit more than normal - though I guess there's not much different you would be doing if just trotting down the carriageway! Just a thought and probably a wrong one :-)

The way I'm going by next Monday I'll be wrapped up in cotton wool and bed ridden :P

Re:Pre holiday injury paranoia ...

Have to say I have been extremely paranoid about injuries recently, the dog nearly pulled me over on sheet ice the other day and I declined to join someone in the field by my house for a spot of skiing at the weekend for fear falling over on crappy snow.

19 more sleeps!

I always feel that the more cautious you are the more inclined you are for something to go wrong, this does not apply to actual skiing though. Just get on with everyday life and enjoy your holiday. 8)

I can understand how you feel. I tore my knee almost 2 years ago jumping up on my horse(bareback)... and have been waiting for our crap Canadian medical system wait list to get it fixed.
I still ski with a hinged brace and painkillers ...but everytime I ski ,I talk to the ski gods and say.."Please let me get through this ski day with out the knee giving out" The things we do for the love of skiing. :D

Great news though..today I received a call for my MRI booking,it has taken a year to get!

Jeeno,have fun on your vacation!

oh gosh I would be afraid at anytime to ski indoor ,we dont have those here! What are they like to ski on?

I gave up 5s all together as my only source of income is now skiing and I frequently picked up a knock when playing. Also stopped 11s for the same reason. Also stopped running for the knees.

But must make do with whatever we have!

Will get skiing over your side of the Atlantic at some point hopefully - have a friend who's in Lake Louise as we speak (rather type!), his third time there, so he keeps leaning on me to venture out that way. It will happen. Just don't know when! :-)

I hate MRI scans but they aren't really so bad...

Sounds like you need to run with the only solution that fits here and that is to go private for it.

NHS: Wait for consultant appointment-6 months

Ross Hall: Wait for consultant appointment and MRI scan- 6 days

Your right Pablo,I almost went private..but it is super expensive here.
There is such a waiting list here in Canada for hips and knees. Getting that phone call today for the appointment shocked me..but in a good way! :-o

Now I will probably have to wait another year for the specialist to fix it! This has been going on for 2 years!

Glad to hear the MRI isnt too bad, good to know..never had one before :D
You just have to be comfortable with sitting still.. you are allowed to go to sleep or take a CD and they will play that for you.

I had to lie for about 40 minutes motionless which killed me

There is a button to be pressed if you get panicy but there is nothing to worry about as you won't be all the way in the tube just for a knee scan!

I think the 20 minutes with the Consultant here cost about $200 canadian and the scan about $1100 canadian but it was worth not having to wait.

I don't know if you are allowed the ipod in, might interfere or something.. (or the machine might interfere with your ipod)

40 minutes was a quick one for one knee, you can look forwards to up to 2 hours of fun depending on how complicated your scan gets/what they have to look at.

I slept through most of my knee mri, so I'm not sure how long it took. The modern machines are getting much quicker. A good ortho doc will know what's up without an mri and the scan is just to make sure there are no surprises.

As to private insurance, it is nice. The only problem is that your taxes might have to go up several hundred bucks a month to get that kind of service on a National health type program. In the US, a family plan with a $1000 deductable and 10% co-pays will set you back about $900 a month. 10% co-pays (you pay 10% of the cost each time you go)sounds ok until some thing very bad goes wrong. 10% of a $500,000 treatment bill is a lot of money. As a Brit, I rather appreciate swanning into see the ortho on a next day appointment and just going down the hall for an mri then and there, but there's a huge price to pay. I'm sure there's a middle ground if the politicians can find it.

LM, good luck with the scan and hope it's an easy fix.

Trencher

LM, I had an MRI scan on 1 knee last year, done privately and it took 20 minutes. The time can stretch out if you flinch or wriggle, and it ruins the image (makes it blurry) and they have to do a re-run. The operator will tell you when the scanning run is taking place, and your Yoga study will pay dividends for you.

If you go into the scanner room determined to be utterly calm and relaxed it really is no big deal :D

Modern scanners are a lot less noisy than ones 10-15 years ago, trust me on this

Nothing metal to be taken in to the scanner room, as it generates a magnetic field )

Thanks Bandit for the advice. I will just have to make myself relax and go to a happy place...same thing I do when Im in the dentist chair

Jenno, dont even joke about hurting you knee.Im sending you good positive vibe's from Canada..you wont hurt yourself )

As far as Canada goes..Well of course "the west is the best" :D British columbia and Alberta. Banff, is beautiful.
I live in the interior of BC,45 minutes from sunpeaks ski resort..which is one of my favorite places on earth!
Ski into the town..right to your hotel or condo, friendly people, great food and best of all the skiing is fab!
During the week,no liftlines. Its really nice.
http://www.sunpeaksresort.com/

From listening to the accents in the liftlines..I would say the uk loves this mountain :)

Nellyps-that poor lady! what terrible luck!

Cheers for the vibes will carry them with me till I go and during too! :-)

And thanks for the link, it looks a fantastic place and somewhere a little bit further away from the mass tourist trade, or certainly away from the typical tourist ski areas of Canada offered through normal agents over here. Will have a word with my mate (got back today so am waiting for his ongoing report of Lake Louise!) and tell him it comes highly recommended! :-)

As for plenty of Brits in the liftlines not so sure if that's a good thing or not ha ha

And do you have a facebook account by any chance as if so will PM you my full moniker and you can decide if you want to add me :-) or not :(

What normally happens is I have so many flaming log ons and passwords for things that I'll forget who I am on here, disappear and then reappear under a totally different name :!: I wish I could make out that it's because I'm risque and make close to the knuckle comments. Alas it's only because am a half arsed dimwit who can't keep track of things  :D

LM,

Did you see the Rick Mercer Report last week where Rick was guided around Sun Peaks by Nancy? She should have taken him down Cover Shot! Rick would have tried it - one way or the other.
Mike

I think there are videos online of objects (such as wheelchairs!) flying towards them and sticking, which are quite amusing, but quench the magnet which costs a fortune to fix. :D

I live near Middlesbrough :D
All riding at present is done on local bridle paths, with as many layers on as possible (it's bl**dy cold out there at the minute!!) and with a saddle on as current horse, although lovely, is bony and uncomfotable :D

Re:Pre holiday injury paranoia ...

Hmm, should probably read things back before posting! :D

To set the record straight, in the summer I go out in a T shirt and jodhpurs - I haven't got long enough hair to be doing Lady Godiva impressions, and have no desire to get arrested!! )

And on the bony horse front, the only answer is to borrow another one! :D

I used to do a lot of bareback show jumping when I was younger, but have acquired a bit more sense since I came off and landed on a scaffolding fence, resulting in a large divot in my left hip and two weeks on crutches.

Now I've taken up skiing, I have another option for breaking my neck so can be a bit more sensible with the riding

Good luck :D And that goes for Sunday morning too! :D

Ski-ing is a great cure for a hangover - unlike coming into work which just seems to heighten the 'experience' ! :(

All better now though, if only a little tired, but I have a neighbours 1st wedding anniversary party to go to tomorrow night so Sunday morning I may well feel a little delicate too - though by the time I'm well into my Sunday, and have recovered and it's worn off you'll just be waking up to experience yours ha ha  - that's supposed to be more of a pukey face than an embarrassed one

But enjoy yourself, enjoy your ski-ing and enjoy the party! :D

See ya!

thanks Jenno and Caron, :)
Glad your feeling better jenno from your night out.

Oh my god I had the best day skiing :D...so much powder! It snowed all day!
Without sounding like bragging :oops:We took my nephew ...he's an Alberta boy who ski's the rockies but had never skied at Sunpeaks...anyway he told me today that this was the best powder that he has ever skied on.. and than he told us that that was his favorite ski mountain ! It was very cute, hes a darn good skier for a 13 year old . He wants me to take him back on Sunday....(now I really cant get a hangover ha ha ha )

Anyway you all should come out this way and try our champagne powder!

Well after a couple glasses of wine and a tylenol..the knee is hanging in....aching and limping..but oh so worth it! I felt a bit insecure in the powder today..had to force myself to be more aggressive. Just cant wait till it is fixed!

(sorry guys I cant spell or type tonight..too tired I think)
