Sunday dinner

We are having roast pork tonight, first time in about 15 years. We usually have beef or lamb, or sometimes chicken, but never usually pork. I am not a big fan of pork, but it smells delicious.
It will be aided down by a nice bottle of Chateauneuf de Pape which I am particularly looking forward to, and then we can sit down and watch ski sunday which I recorded on sky plus earlier.

Can you tell I am bored?

Stopped at my brothers on the way home from skiing so decided to get a takeaway and chill out in front of the tele before I make the trek back to Helensburgh!

I'm having beef bourguignon in about half an hour but alas I have a cellar full of vino but no Chateauneuf :cry: :cry: :cry:

Same here, not a fan of pork but we had pork last Sunday. Rib-eye steak to-night.

dont talk to me about dinner,after all my effort of getting it ready the new flaming cooker wont work oven keeps cutting out so i have had, potatoes, swede pea's and gravy !!!no yorkshires, no roast chicken and no stuffing :( :x
and to top it off its snowing again another week of walking to work and back,

I just made a yorkshire pudding with slices of beef and gravy. Unfortunately I didn't have enough milk so had to 'be creative' and mix with water. Tasted ok, but was rather flat - I'll award myself 7/10 given the circumstances.

Pork is rancid - which is odd considering the same animal provides bacon.

I cant get it right either, but my resident chef can, mind you he does come from Yorkshire. He says the secret is make it 4 hours in advance and keep whisking it. For 6 yorkshire puds, 6 heaped spoonfuls plain flour, 2 eggs, pinch salt, eggcup of water, then top up with milk to correct consistency et voila perfect puds.

Don't do roasts. Too much effort when there's only two of us. Had a big fry up at sainsbury's this morning before shopping hell. Then made a HUGE cheese, potato & onion pie from scratch including the pastry (which actually probably took as long as a roast). Enough left for lunch tomorrow and tea. Blimey! Will be veggied out by Tuesday.

Never thought I'd be typing this but it's all about cooking at the highest temperature and letting the batter 'rest'.
Adjust measures accoringly but add 2 eggs to 160 ml of milk and a generous pinch of salt. Beat senseless and then rest for 15mins. Then beat in 130grams of plain flour until smooth. Rest until you are ready to use. Pre-heat the cooking vessell (with oil) at the highest possible temperature. Et voila!

Oh I forgot! Made chocolate orange brownies this afternoon aswell. I am in OH's good books today.
Fair deal though, she did clean the house from top to bottom and do all the washing up for me.

Bacon is the reason I know vegetarians have taken leave of their senses and are just wrong on the whole not eating meat issue.

Well, congrats to Mrs H for a fantastic dinner. The pork was lovely, done long and slow so it fell to bits. I am converted, and will happily have it again. Makes a nice change as well.

Right, on with the CDP and ski sunday. I think thats me for the night.

I can not actually remember the last meal I cooked. OH does all the cooking, he loves it. When I have the girls round for a 'witches coven'. as he calls it, he cooks us a 3 course dinner then goes out. I'm in charge of housework and decorating, he cooks.

What a sheltered life you lead, Caron )

I am joining a group of 9 boarders on my next trip. Me and Mrs H will be the only skiers amongst the group, although some of them are first or second weekers, so I will be keeping well away from them!

Just off to find out why there isnt any desert..... :twisted:

Rose, like you my oh does all the cooking. He's also pretty good at housework too. I'm worried now though because he's discovered this forum and you know what that means!!! We'll have to get an aupair :shock:

When we first got married the arrangement was he cooks, I wash up. So the first thing I did was buy a dishwasher. :lol:

Now I have to find a way to get rid of some evil virus that has camped on my computer, and attempts to send hundreds of emails out each week purporting to sell watches. My Norton stops them going out, but so far I haven't been able to eradicate the little begger. And it constantly interupts the screen.

If I could ever catch the bum who did this, would take him to the top of the steepest run, and strap skis onto him..... :twisted:

A thought just struck me whilst I was lying in the bath re. Yorkshire puddings. I hope I'm not being patronising but one shouldn't wash the tin either otherwise it's just going to stick next time.

Right I can go to bed and sleep easy now. I wonder if this is how people like Ise feel after sharing their knowledge on a subject?!

It doesn't announce itself, so I don't know the name. I run the Norton AV scan every day, but it isn't picking this up, my son reckons, there fore it must be in the register, or somewhere like that. Too complicated for me to go poking about.

I'm also the cook of the house. The problem with Sunday roast dinners is that I'm a purist. That means lard is the only cooking medium. Roast potatoes have to be par boiled and roasted in lard. So it's only a once or twice a year thing. I also really like roasted parsnips.

The next day is always bubble and squeak for dinner (again out comes the lard). Our family secret for Yorkshire pud is to put a little fat from the meat into each individual pudding pan be for pouring in the mix and as said be for, hot oven.

As it happens, I'm making chicken korma tonight.

I did roast beef and yorkshire pud tonight and have to say it was rather good.
My secret for good yorkshire puds is to get the oven REALLY hot.

I chuck in about 4 oz plain flour, 2 eggs and enough milk to make a not thin (but not thick) batter. I'm sure there is a description for the consistency.

I use sunflower oil or the like, I find olive oil sticks. Then take the meat out to rest...and whack the oven up. Get the fat hot, then pour in the batter. Take about 12 mins.

And we watched Ski Sunday 1st!

I did Steak au Poivre, Gratin Dauphinois and broccoli served with Lindemans Chardonnay (not a red person really). Have just removed my new boots and got my son to adjust my bindings and I have to report - so far so good on the comfort side - even did some prescribed ski exercises from son whilst wearing them - they have been on for about 5 hours so can't wait now to try them out next week in the 3V :lol:

What on earth is wrong with Aunt Bessies Yorkshire puds :oops:

Earlier today when I should have been tidying the study, I was procrastinating & we too went to the coop. We let our friendly hen, Ruby, out & took a photo of her standing on our snowman's head. :D
Then we had a roast chicken dinner (free range of course - not Ruby though....we'd never eat her)!

Just reading this is making me hungry!!

Looking forward to the remains of last night's roast chicken in a sandwich with rocket and mayo for my lunch, though sadly the chocolate fudge pudding didn't survive beyond 8pm last night. )

And for perfect Yorkshires, it's got to be beef dripping in the tins - loads more calories than oil but they taste so much better. :D

Yes, bought quite a few of their speciality foods back with us. Reindeer and bear pate, lingonberry and cloudberry jams and jellys and sauces.
Reindeer is lovely meat supposed to be good for you as its high in vits and minerals and no fat. I preferred it when it was used in soups, pate etc rather than a huge steak. But very nice all the same.

I did'nt know that, I know you get loganberry's here but not lingonberry. We thought the same on the meat front, so did,nt bring any actual meat back, but we were allowed sealed cans and containers of meats.
As for your reindeer picture, it was really difficult to visit reindeer farms and see them wild, and then go to a restaurant and eat them. Had to distance myself from the two.

To be honest, I've no idea where the photo is. Initially I didn't do anything - just thought I'd followed all the Photobox instructions & it seemed to have worked (as witnessed by Bandit). Checked back & Ruby had gone. I did a lot of messing about 'experimenting' after that & may have messed up. OH thinks I'm a freak - he can't understand why I'm wasting so much time attempting to show people I don't even know a picture of our hen sitting on the snowman! :roll:

a real quicky (and the only time I use processed ingredients):- boil pasta (penne or such like), jar of tomato type pasta sauce and tuna stirred in and heated, into dish, loads of grated cheese on top, stick under the grill.

pretty tasty for cheating :D

Last night as a starter Hubby made prawn and crab cakes, they were to die for. All made from scratch and a lovely chilli dip sauce, really nice.
While this topic is about food, has any one every used a Raclette. Its traditional every Xmas one of Hubbys presents is always a gadget for the kitchen, I bought him one and we have never used it. Dont really know how.
