Trencher adds so much knowledge and quality to J2ski. I know we get a range of views on different issues, lots of newbies, lots of mid-skiers, a few "experts", even less "ancients", (that's me and two others :oops:)

Trencher has his strongly individual way of viewing skiing, and is not afraid to challenge other views. Sad to say, one or two people respond in an entirely personal way. That is negative, and sometimes hostile. I don't see why we cannot accomodate all views, in a positive way.

Among the most experieced skiers on J2. who else has the courage to put videos of their skiing & boarding out to the public? Who else provides as much technical technique info?

C'mon Trencher, get back to the fold.

erm... I think he has got the hump over the carving discussion he pm`d me after my first ever post here and did say......

"I noticed your link on the j2ski forum. I'm no longer posting there because carving on skis seems to be a subject of ridicule by some of the "experts" at the moment."

he did say more and I know it wasnt me he was referring too..blimey my first ever post and this happens.. have to say this site is enormously informed and valueable with witty and intelligent comment..hope he comes back

This forum would be incredibly boring if we all liked the same things, we all agreed on every topic,we all skied the same resort, well sorry the latter often happens (N), its all about discussion and choice, the problems arise when that old ego gets a bit bruised because there is a clash of opinions, sometimes you just have to agree to disagree.

I don't think there was any suggestion of an obligation in Dave Mac's post, nor did he imply that those who didn't post videos were without courage. I don't think it should be a particularly contentious point that putting a video of your own technique up to public scrutiny (on the internet of all places!) requires some courage, but that's certainly not to say that those who don't are cowards! They may have all the courage in the world but no desire to share such things.

I'd certainly agree that there is a not insignificant contingent of people providing plenty of useful information on here, and I hope they all continue to contribute freely.

implies that in his view Trencher has more courage than other posters. Alternatively the rest of us just can't be @rsed with camcorders, which could be viewed as a lack of courage, preferring to spend our time doing skiing.

Bandit, you have taken me slightly out of context, in that you missed out the initial part. There have been a number of video posters from inters, but, among the more experienced skiers, I list only one poster. I think it does take courage to post a video that displays your ability, and is there to be openly criticised.

Please don't get into the semantics of "experienced skiers". You know what I mean.

So, since there are some who have not liked the way I expressed the observation, (ie in comparitive terms), I withdraw it.

I am an admirer of Trencher's total commitment to his way of skiing and, yes, I will say it, boarding. :cry:

That is not to say, I am going to start skiing without sticks, I need these every day to fix my mistakes. However, I suggest that Trencher's videos, accompanying explanations, and occasional offers of technical comment to those who request such, are a valued contribution to our site.

I see this no differently from the valuable contributions that you make to our knowledge of mountaincraft and equipment Ise.

None of us are gurus, we have all built up our experiences in different ways. Each of us has different things to offer, and different things to learn.

This site has been much the poorer for the loss of Trencher and Jan, caused in both cases, by people being offensive. It is much easier to be kindly to each other.

Both were highly offensive in their more recent posts, the fact some of the posts had to removed and aren't available as a record of that doesn't really alter it. At least one of them went on to send a few petulant PM's which really speaks for itself.

Before it does, I can honestly say I have not seen anything on this site that can be regarded as offensive. Differences of opinion? Yes.

However, I am sorry to hear that certain people have decided to stop posting because of so called offence being taken. I dont recall the threads or comments made which led to Trencher or Jan from stopping posting, although I do recall their being quite an opinionated discussion re carving from a while back. I always found Trencher offered good information, particularly regarding technique, whilst Jan has been involved in the sport at a high level for many years and knows his onions alright.

Like Ian W said, its good that we dont all like the same things or share the same opinions.

I've always hidden behind my keyboard when it comes to the facts/opinion argument but I have to say that I'm very angry that what was intended to be a lighthearted thread has once again turned into another pick-apart-what-you've-said and turn it into an unnecessarily heated discussion that can often cause upset. The irony is incredible.

I hate it and I'm beginning to understand why some people no longer post...

I reiterate my withdrawal of the comparitive element of my observation.

There are no reasons why other people should post videos of themselves.

I also reiterate my support for Trencher's past postings, and my appreciation of his videos and helpful comments.

Caron raised this issue in good faith, and I support this.

Can peace break out now?

I knew Trencher was taking a bit of a "vacation" .. But Jan too :?: :shock: I'll have to follow along more closely.

In my case they both have offered skiing elements which I was practising today. The carving is really taking off and the spins are starting to work. It was a really good skiing day in Nova Scotia. The day started with -14C and warmed to about 0C on a day without a cloud in the ski nor wind in the air. This all followed 25cm of new snow about mid week. I wish you all could have been here - or at least had as good or better conditions wherever you skied today.

Guy's I think we need to bring this to an end, I personally do not understand why someone would stop posting because someone has a differing opinion, no matter how much you might disagree with it.
I have never in my tender months using this site taken offense of somebody's opinion, because thats what it is somebody's opinion, and I hope no one out there has taken offense to anything I've said not even "Niederau Dave " because I have teased him, but hopefully it has been taken as intended as a bit of fun, to stop posting because of a disagreement of opinion smells to me of throwing rattle out of the pram.
Come on boys and girls lets get back to some informative chat and some good old fashioned banter, I thank you... :lol: :lol: 8) 8)

In all seriousness, I'm sure the dust has settled on this. In my initial resonse I made an error in my support for Trencher of incorporating the comparitive, when the superlative would have been more correct.

Someone else took Ise to task, but I didn't think Ise was being aggressive towards me, he was responding how he felt. Bandit took me to task, I admit that did scare me, but time is a great healer.

I just love skiing.

Guys, I would be happy if we could close this little episode and look to the future. There are a few people to blame for letting this get heated, including myself.

This is a young forum, at least in terms of being active. I remember commenting a few years ago that it was more like an ent moot (like one post a week). Dave(admin)replied "never say anything unless it is worth taking a long time to say...". I would paraphrase that and say, never say anything controversial or offensive unless you give it some thought.

Hey, there are at least two months of the season left and better things to do :-)

BTW I'm still struggling with those stupid pole thingies :wink:
