flying

Just a question really, not being a seasoned traveller. Do all planes fly with an engineer?
Going out to Ruka we flew with 2 pilots and an engineer and on the way back. Flight back was delayed about 30mins because of a technical fault, and stewardess said engineer saved the day, otherwise we would'nt have been going any-where.

what did he do? hit a gauge with a spannerr until it started working ? :D

IIRC from my long past in aero-engineering, not all aircraft require an engineer and it's part of the type certification, but it's been a long time and my memory could be wrong. Also, IIRC, some pilots have a second role as a flight engineer so on flights with two pilots one may be a flight engineer as well although I think there's some variance about what training engineers have.

Re:flying

Hubby reckons engineer was on a freebie holiday. Just coincidence that he came in useful for re-fuelling problems.

Re:flying

The answer is no, planes dont fly with engineers, unless there was a known problem which may have required his experience. I would imagine it was either a coincidence, or like hubby said, he was on a freebie.

Mind you, you flew easyjet didnt you.....their old 737s have a habit of going tech from what I know (which is why they are all being replaced by the Airbuses), so they may have requested an engineer if there was a known problem possibly?

Put it like this, I know you are a nervous flier, but they dont go anywhere if there is the slightest risk. Going on a plane that had a tech fault actually should give you more peace of mind as it means they found and dealt with something that could have been a problem.

We were on an Airbus not 737, but that was the longest flight I have ever done and was absolutely fine this time.

Actually Tony I had a few fears while waiting at airport but as soon as we boarded I settled down completely, I found the air crew so good and spent a fair time chatting to them, even the Captain came out and showed me on a map which countries we had crossed, cos I asked cabin crew and they did'nt know. Perhaps my fear is on the way out and I can start doing longer flights now.
