Re:Chalet Tipping

I reckon that depends on the service you got.

First class chalet maids I would tip 10-15 euros per couple/room, and sliding scale down from there. If the average chalet has 5-7 room, then thats 50-100 euros. Not too bad for doing their job.

Previously had a maid not worth a dime, so that's what she got.

Am I mean?

Re:Chalet Tipping

last year I think we did 10 euros per couple and the staff seemed very pleased. the year before we didn't give them a bloomin penny because they didn't deserve it . in fact, I think they should've tipped us for putting up with them!

It's quite simple, tip only if you have received good service do not tip just because everybody else does

Re:Chalet Tipping

Agree with Ian, dont feel obliged to tip anyone.

I dont usually tip anyone for anything in the UK as I believe we are over charged for a generally poor service. there are of course the odd exceptions. However, Mrs H believes the waiters make up their small income by receiving tips and feels obliged to always leave a couple of quid.

As for chalet staff, all 8 of us tipped 5 euros each which was GBP40 for the guy. He was good as gold, a decent cook, and had to put up with a hell of a lot of banter all week so he earned it. However, I wouldnt tip anyone if I thought they hadnt deserved it. Most of us left our ski passes behind as we had spent up, so the chalet host could go and cash the deposits in at 5 euros a go.

Not sure if thats the goind rate, but it seemed to be agreeable with everyone.

Re:Chalet Tipping

Perhaps I was a bit generous but definitely think it was worth it for the service we had all week..

Is this for chalet type hotels or privately run chalets?

Re:Chalet Tipping

Actually I dont tip that often unless exceptional service. I am in the public sector and do lots for people but often dont even get a thank-you, let alone a tip. Although some of our drug addicts do give me chocolates at Xmas, but I cant keep them as they have usually just nicked them from the shop.

Re:Chalet Tipping

I worked as a chalet host last season, and our tips were essential as they pay you so little.

Obviously only tip if you feel you get great service, as I know some hosts who were shocking and shouldn't deserve anything, but things would get tight if I had a bad tip.

I was working in val d'isere, so benefited slightly as my guest were quite rich, but an average week would be 100 euros (for an 8 bed chalet) and a few of my friends were lucky enough to get 300 euro tip

It's a personal thing though - and I'd never be able to predict who was going to tip well, some guests I got on really well with and went all out for, but didn't get much back, others would hardly talk to you but give a great tip at the end of the week. In the end it's got to be what you feel comfortable with, and what you feel they deserve.

sounds reasonable to me, a good pot if other people did similar.

Tipping is a bit difficult, I don't mind tipping for good service but I've a serious problem tipping to subsidise an employer who's not paying their staff a living wage. Attitudes vary between countries, in Switzerland good service is included and people earn reasonable wages so tips tend to be low, when I'm in the US indifferent service seems the norm' and you can be pretty much mugged by staff demanding tips, it's something of a tyranny then and entirely objectionable.
