Do I need?.........

Hi I am just wondering if I need to buy ski straps for my skis or do they come with the hire of the skis? also do i need a lift pass holder? I am going to Niederau Just wondering if I need the lift pass on an elastic type mechanism to be able to swipe turnstyles or are they not like that?

Also is there anything I can buy to temporarily put on to the hire skis that will differentiate mine from someone elses?

Normally your skis do stay together ok but ski straps are a good idea. They don't come with the skis and don't cost lots really. Also they will help you to identify your own hire skis.

The Niederau pass is hands free so it just gets put in a safe left hand side pocket - preferably an inside one that you will not use to store other things in. Some Jackets have special pockets for them on the sleeve.

A cable lock is normally the best ID your skis can have :D

I would say yes to putting something on your skis when you stop for lunch as many skis are the same make and colour. I found this out last year when someone took my skis by mistake, :x but returned them 10 minutes later as they didn't fit their boots (settings were wrong for them). This said person was moaning about the fact they couldn't get them on, at which point I promptly said that they were mine - here's yours. At least the embarrasment :oops: wasn't mine.

It wasn't funny at the time being stuck at the top of the mountain at the Cafe, virtually on my own as everyone had gone off skiing. I even missed half an hour of my ski lesson by the time I caught my group up.

Regarding lift passes. As it's been said. The Niederau passes are plastic with magnetic strip, so it's safe to place in pocket. Preferably pocket on the arm then you won't need an elasticated holder. We took holders the first time we went to Niederau and never used them. So they were a waste of money for us.

The same thing happened to me last year in Val Thorens, except I waited at the top of the lift for an hour and they never came back.
Had to get a police report, hire skis for the week and claim mine back on the insurance. They were brand new which was a right ball ache.
I now have little labels stuck on the back on my bindings with my name and telephone number.

I wanted something temporary to put on the hire skis so i could take them off when i returned them. i was thinking about maybe the plastic type stickers that you sometimes get in kids sticker books that they can move around the book to put on the skis but the chances are they will fall off.

when you stop for a break do you tend to tie your skis together or just take them off and go? what is the protocol?

I tend not to tie them up as it can be a hastle to find the straps in a bag and do it all up. I usually lean them against a wall or stand them up in soft snow but make sure they are towards the edge of all the skis. Its a lot easier than dumping them in the middle of everyone elses. A small bit of yellow (or another bright colour) insulation tape on the bindings is sure to mark out which are your's.

Thumbs up for the advice re easy-peel stickers and/or a bit of bright coloured insulation tape.
Another good idea is to mix & match your skis with a mate and then leave one 'pair' a bit away from the other - that way you have 2 miss-matched pairs, which means someone else is less likely to confuse them with their own (or nick them!).

I actually swapped a ski with one of my mates once. One twintip park ski and one short carver. It made left turns very quickly and right turns a lot slower but the skis kept crossing into each other! We both had the same size boots and din settings so it worked well.
