The Niederau Experience

I'm back in body but not in spirit!

I want to send out huge heartfelt thanks to Jan, Mrs Jan and family Jan, admin man and Dave Mac (oh, and my husband). They made the trip perfect, I have come home buzzing and looking forward rather than being in limbo. The only thing I would change is that my sons would've been there. At least it gives us an excuse to go back :D.

I think Niederau is a wonderful place, it's so friendly and very personal. Dave Mac and the Jan family were all very generous people with their time, effort and unbounded enthusiasm, they went well beyond the call of duty to look after us and we were treated to a very local view which made it a special experience.

I like small resorts and I also like large resorts. I understand both points of view. The world would be a pretty boring place if we were all the same I suppose. Everyone that's going, enjoy! A couple of photos below.

Thanks again and thanks to everyone on the forum for your support and helping me through a very difficult year. 2009 is gonna ROCK! I'm back on the piste

Caron
xx

ps. apologies for starting another N thread but I didn't want my gratitude lost on page 24 of the reports thread!
Re:The Niederau Experience

Congratulations Caron A!!! We are off to Niederau 2 weeks today and will be staying at Auhof also. I have been following the previous thread on behalf of my best friend who has just had her knee done and is devastated that there will be no skiing this season. I havee been keeping her updated on your progress so she knows there is light at the end of the tunnel. She will be siging up as a J2Skier so she can get in touch with you to chat about "knee operation recovery"

Thanks for the great pics and the daily updates

We're off to the Wildschonau at 6:00am in the morning - staying in Oberau as usual. Looks like you've left us plenty of snow to play in Caron. Looking forward to skiing around the valley and might pop over to Kitz once the FIS circus leaves town.

Re:The Niederau Experience

First of all apologies that I have been home from the wonderful Niederau for a week and have not posted my "report"! Our laboratory has been refitted, and as that pays the bills I have been there most of the week. I have not even been on the Quo site! Time must be tight.

Before tackling Niederau proper, echoing others, I have to thank Jan, his wife and mother-in-law, their boys, their staff ... and not forgetting Fred!

Nothing was too much for them: from shuttling me to and from Kranebitten, to our daily trip to ADEG for freshly baked pretzels for breakfast; from an on-demand taxi service up to and down from the Auhof, to visiting local restaurants for a Grostl and Weibbier.

After a welcoming Bier and a quick trip up to the room, which I'd seen before, I felt as if I had never left the Wildschonau Hochtal.

The Auhof itself cannot be faulted, unless having no subscription to the Volksmusik TV channel can be counted! The rooms are spacious, clean and tidy. As for the view from the balcony - what can I say? I thought I had already had the best view from the top centre of the Vicky, but the Auhof's views are spectacular - all mountains and sunshine, with the valley spread out below.

The daily trip down from the Auhof is a dawdle, maybe it is the magnetic slopes calling you down that helps speed you on but the taxi at the end of a hard, but wonderful, day spent skiing was very welcome.

The Auhof was the icing on the cake.

"N" - One poor day due to flat light up on the mountain and one poor day due to too many Jagerbombes in the Cave Bar - the youngsters made me do it! Honest!

However, the rest of the week was perfect. Not too cold - only -10oC in the shade, but with plenty of light to enjoy the slopes.

Up on the Markbachjoch there was glorious sunshine and no wind-chill until you schussed down the hill. I've been up Hintertux, in the next valley along, in a blizzard and know what I would prefer.

There was no new snow whilst I was there but I have always preferred hard pack corduroy to powder in any case. There was very little ice on the reds I used. The piste basher crews certainly know their stuff and cannot be faulted.

No pictures I am afraid - I was too busy enjoying myself. And the week went far too quickly.

The first week of the New Year is also not long after the shortest day, so there was no surprise about the lack of sunshine down near the gondola, but I know from experience that later in the season there will be sunshine aplenty for those that need their sun fix. At -10oC it was not particularly cold, but then again where I come from we consider double figues to be a heatwave! One of the bonuses of the Scottish blood. I was warm enough with a ski jacket and thermals.

The red ski school certainly know their business and gave plenty of instruction and guidance where needed. Watching them strut their stuff at the weekly ski school demo showed a very talented bunch. The warming Gluhwein took the chill off. I even shared a drag with Sepp as he checked on things.

The ski race at the end of the week was a blast although not really a race - just a run down one of the beginners' slopes through a set of slalom gates. Just a laugh really, the old gits versus the young ladies!

Queues? What queues? A 5 minute wait at the start of the week whilst the Niederau first timers got to grips with who/what/where. After that there was plenty of choice, from the 4-man chair up to the Lanerkopfl at one end of the village, to the Tennladen drag at the other end opposite the Harfenwirt.

The best runs for me were from the Lanerkopfl down under the gondola and over to the middle of the Tennladen, with the other being from the Chapel down the Kropfrader and Mittermooser, down past the top of the Tennladen and then back into the middle of it, and then down to the gondola. What was I frightened of?

The blues have now kicked in and it is looking like I will not be able to run away to the Auhof until the summer.

Now, Niederau in the summer is an entirely different, but equally enjoyable, story.

@RoseR - I have not forgotten.

Janbail, glad you had a great time, the easiest way (I think) to upload photos onto J2ski is to use a photo site like Flickr or Picasa to host your pics, and then you can include them into a thread. Most of the hosting sites, let you choose the size as well, so you can make them fit the page :D

We are having a ball, Caron. Were up in Aufach today, and discovered that this suits the repairing leg much better, so will be back for more. Much easier skiing at Auffach, and very nice on a sunny day. Even better views of the Alps than N.

The boys making constant improvement, we do a couple of runs doing drills at the start of the day, then just enjoy.
Back in Paradise, as I know it. Met up with Rustyinn, (Dave) and friend. Had a meal together, then repaired to the Bichlwirt. Herbert put in one of his great Harp performances. I have to confess, that RustyInn and I sang, accompanied by the Harp, "March of the Hebrew Slaves,(Nebucha)", in Italian! You heard it here first folks! (Unless, of course, you were in the Bichlwirt.)

And then, had the best part of the next day, skiing with Rusty Dave, a neat, competent and fast skier. Has got his skiing plan well sorted out. Good luck Rusty -Dave! Twas a very enjoyable meet up.

Have failed to meet up with SkiGirl. After a week in January, appoaching girls, asking - "Are you Paralytic?", I draw the line at trogging round Niederau, saying to the lassies- "I'm looking for a SkiGirl!" The Oberau police would be quickly into action!

Amanda, I could do your nails for you. I've got to wax my skis tomorrow night anyway, and it will probably be red. :-o

It's dumping snow here, (Thanks to Admin Dave for organising that). I'm waxing up the short skis. Been skiing today with Steve, my Blackburn ski-buddy. He's just a tad quick for me, so will be hitting the Ibruprofen soon.

My ski buddy Mel has just got permission to fly, so will arrive sometime over the weekend.

No sign of Amanda, but loud snooooring noises from that end of the village. Col neither.

Steady snow all day. But what a night in the Bichlwirt. Two local ladies, playing guitar and singing tirol songs, with passion and beautiful yodel melodies.

I did a bit of plucking, followed by a Dutch guy who picked up the guitar & did some stuff, then two old Irish guys waded in.

Scary lady was there, but I introduced her to the two Irish guys, and all is well in the world.

Oh, and the skiing is wonderful.

I am really pleased that our Amanda won Gold Medal in the Ski School races today. That is quite an achievement, gave her a big hug. Amanda is a very keen, and fast improving skier, out early every day.

It is just unbelievable March snow. As good as I can remember. It will be interesting to look at the season-end statistics, c/w previous seasons. Now seing regular local piste skiers checking out the off piste.

Half of the Austrian ladies ski team were here last weekend, race training. Have an interesting story about that, definitely not for publishing.

So, let's hear it for Amanda.

Sorry to have missed you on your last night Amanda. I did send a garbled txt message in response to yours, then another to try and amend the first.

While you were flashing you GM on prize giving night, I was chatting to Reiner. Currently, he is just about the best deep snow skier here, and he teaches a certain technique, (downward unweighting), to the other instructors.

The previous evening, from the Gondola, I watched four instructors come down the Stuck, in knee deep powder, and it was some display of smooth technique. Reiner was last to go, and it was some run. Would have won a GM on Utube, if anyone had mde a video.

Hello All. Im back ! What a fantastic week we had !! Snow evey day/night until Friday when sadly on our last day it rained
However, I am happy to report the Little `un , aged 9 , dumped the snowboard went back to his skis and did the blue loop at the top of the gondola, got fed up with that and graduated to the little red run which he managed twice in quick succession. Not bad considering its his first time out !

I loved red 19 and my other half did 24 and the black a few times. ! Conditions were absolutely fabulous until Friday when it was blizzards at the top of the Gondola but the other half still managed the red 19 down but only once. !

Hotel Austria was a brilliant location for us and is a fine hotel for families.
Will post some pics as soon as ive downloaded them !

Roll on next year !!
Cheers all, have a great summer, Love Ava xxxxxxxxxxx

Hi Ava
I'd be really interested to hear what the hotel Austria was like. We stayed at the Harfenwirt, which was a bit of a hike from ski school (thank goodness for the storage room beside O'Malleys!). The Austria would have been much better from that point of view, but I was wondering whether there was much noise, either from O'Malleys or from drunken revellers in the early hours? Sorry but I'm too old for that sort of thing now and I'm a light sleeper so everything wakes me up
If we were going back to N I'd consider the Austria for location. Maybe we could request rooms at the back, away from the street...

Allie

Re:The Niederau Experience

Hi Allie. The Austria was really very nice. I didnt hear much from anywhere even though O Malleys was only a stones throw from my balcony .I seem to remember on one night there may have been a bit of jollification from a couple of young uns but it was for only about 2 minutes and didnt bother any of us.

I can heartily reccommend the hotel. The only tiny drawback is that if on half-board you have to order dinner at breakfast time !

Overall its location is ideal for the nursery slopes and the Gondola about 3-4 mins walk away.

The rooms are very clean and comfortable ( we had one that overlooked the slopes) . The ski/boot/hire shop is attached to the hotel down a set of steps.Absolutely ideal. If you can get a LOCKER its safer I guess, but we were unable to have one due to lack of availabilty but the ski room is locked at 6pm when the shop closes so its safe enough. The ski /boot room is free and gratis to all who are staying at the Austria accessible from inside the hotel.A pool, sauna, solarium and back therapy cabin are all available.Afternoon snacks available in the cosy bar area ranging from Tomato soup to tuna salad are welcome after a days skiing.

So all in all, a very good place to stay. The only closer place would be the Alpenland, but I heard that it isnt quite the standard of the Austria.

I would have no hesitation in staying there again.Hope this helps.
Love Ava xx

hi dave mac and all,
i've been off work for a week and have tried to find a last minute flight to enjoy these stupendous conditions, but alas, a flight for GBP450-plus to munich is not within the realms of reasonablesness!
so it's a drool over these fab pics sent by all N fans until blodwyn and i head for N at new year, and at februalry half term 2010.
see you there, L.

hello i stayed at the schneeberger which was fab as well, 5 min walk to ski school, lovely rooms and food very comfortable, you can either leave your skis and boots in their own heated room downstairs or at the ski hire place, apart from the lack of swimming pool i would also recommend this, and no noise, it had a club underneath but never heard a thing very nice i am also a light sleeper and woke up a few times through the night and never heard a thing. reasonable priced too

Re:The Niederau Experience

Hi acarr

Stayed at the Hotel Austria 5 times now - it's in a great location, across the road from the ski school, nursery slopes and gondola. It's also handy to have the ski hire shop and storage right underneath which has access through the hotel. If you're a light sleeper make sure you don't get a room on the church side. The bells seem to ring constantly - once on the quarter past, 2 times on half past and 3 times on quarter to and then 4 times on the hr + the hourly rings (i.e. 5 times for 5 o'clock). It also rings for ages at 6 a.m. every morning (hubby counted 84 times once). The rooms are clean and have everything you need. The resaurant and seating area in reception are no smoking. The pool is open all the time and the sauna and steam room is free on a Mon and Thur but 6.50 euro at any other time.
