Downhill and Super G racers carve most of the race. Slalom skiers try and carve but a lot get late on the gates so have skid to make it.

I said, 'but is he carving'. Was just referring to an old thread and trying to lighten the mood. By being forced in to explaining myself it sorta took the 'edge' off it though.

The main point of the thread was to post the picture which is pretty cool.

Sure, he's carving. :) Who says both skis have to be bent?

Also, does carving denote whether on is the "greatest?" I don't think so. Just like keeping your knees together doesn't make one good. So, what does make a skier great? Racing would seem to be the only true way to know. Covering a specific course with time as the only judge.

Carving seems to be a bitterly contested technique on here. Very interesting. I wonder if it has anything to do with the differences among nationalities? ;)

Leaving carving or not aside, there is no doubt that Bode is a truely amazing skier. His capacity to throw caution to the wind is something to behold and when he gets it right WOW!. I saw him about two years lose a ski with about 5 gates still to ski - he still managed to complete the course on one ski but had to slow down to only 80kph over the final stretch. His time was still good enough to get him into the World Cup points - that must have been pretty disheartening for the lower rank skiers who were unable to match a man on one ski :shock:

.... But is he the greatest? No doubt that he is up there but I have always been a huge admirer of the Herminator. Another skier who would really take on the mountain and more often that not won. Despite his extreme agression, he got down the mountain way more often that Bode and completely dominated the tour until his accident.

Then having been told he would probably never walk again, he manages to get back to competition standard - amazing and an inspiration to anybody facing adversity.

I haven't been following the ski racing that long but DaveMac has rightly suggested Klammer - for so long the poster boy of skiing. And what about Alberto Tomba?

I think its more a case of one or two people have very strong opinions about carving being a seperate discipline rather than a way of turning - makes life interesting )

My Italian friend who taught me to ski ( or at least try to ski ) says Tomba ... but then again he's biased !
Klammer or Maier for me, with Bode 3rd. (and Alberto 4th)

i agree Maire is a more modern hero for me and Tomba I think in his hey day Mrs W used to go weak at the knees :oops:

I once met Gerhard Berger in a pizza restaurant in Soll,Word got around the village and the place was packed to the rafters.The mazarati was a big give away. He has a beautiful chalet on the piste from where he run`s his haulage empire.

Reiner Schoenfelder
Aksel Lund Svindal
Eric Gay
Finnley Mickel
Noel Baxter (who replied to the call of - 'are you a Baxter!')
plus
Graham Bell
Ed Leigh
Nick Fellows

We also got to witness Reiner Schoenfelder skiing nude down the wixi piste having lost a bet.

Last season had quite a long chat with Chemmy Alcott.

Here's that amazing run on one ski by Bode - he didn't acually manage to finish the run but still its amazing how long he managed to keep going! Check the speed near the end - over 80kph on one ski :!:

Brilliant, even going into tuck position at times haha. He would still probably beat a lot of us on one ski. 8)
