Travel Insurance

Hi there

I am looking for travel insurance and was looking onthe direct travel website adn they have 3 levels of insurance.

On one of them (the platinum one) it covers you for damage to ski equipment. This was something I hadnt even factored. what happens if I damage ski equipment? Am I insured at the shop (which will be the one in Niderau (Margereiter) I mean, do I actually need insurance to cover equipment?

Karen

Re:Travel Insurance

Sometimes hire shops offer insurance for their equipment, for example by brother in law last year was humming and haring over equipment insurance for his son, lucky for him he took it out because low and behold a broken pole on the second day. :D

Re:Travel Insurance

Your Travel Insurance needs to cover hired kit, and your own kit if you have it. Check that the amount offered would be sufficient if someone stole the skis (worst case scenario) or buy the shops' own insurance. Do check for damage to hired kit before you leave the shop tho.

I lost a new test ski in a crevassed area in Zermatt in November. I got it back, because someone saw it and returned it, otherwise about a GBP500 bill. Not my fault, faulty binding brake, but the test centre would not have cared about that, only their losses.

Ross, you said it once, and I think you've got away with it!

Karen, If you ordered your skis from Skiset, you would have been offered insurance when you hired.

Assuming that you haven't taken out that insurance, consider if you will ski twice or more within a 12 month period. If so, the additional premium would cover you for all holidays. Errk, I am assuming you are taking out annual insurance.

Re:Travel Insurance

I skied for many years without travel insurance A) because i was young stupid and thought i was invinsible and B) i was too disorganised to sort it.

Then one year i got a blood clot in Andorra and needed airlifting to Barcelona. Luckily my mate had sorted insurance with the trip.

Imagine the cost if he had not.

Since then i never scrimp on my insurance.
Try Dog tag pretty neet idea as you carry your insurance round your neck always have it with you then.

Re:Travel Insurance

I have an annual policy with Marks & Spencer for me and husband. Went with them as they're one of the few companies who will cover my asthma and not treble the premium. Think we paid GBP130 for the two of us for a year with winter sports cover and no excess. They were really good and quick when we claimed for a delay.

insure and go repaid me almost* every penny lost by my accident and the rest - medical centre, x rays, ski pass, lessons, ski hire. I've renewed with them as they haven't bumped up the premium (in fact, I think they may have reduced it, can't remember now) and they are covering the pre-existing condition with no strings attached.

I don't think I'll be moving insurance companies for a while

I always take out the hire shop insurance as an extra precaution. it's pretty cheap I think.

*exchange rate dropped

Re:Travel Insurance

Ski hire insurance and insurance for your own equipment is pretty important.

Last year I put my brand new racing skis down in VT for lunch. When I returned, my skis were gone but an identical pair (make, model, colour) were a couple of metres away which were 10cm longer. I can only assume that the owner of the other skis picked mine up by mistake, managed to clip into the bindings, and set off down the hill none the wiser. Either that or he wasnt getting tight enough turns on his and fancied ago on my shorter ones.

Lukilly I managed to get a police report off the gendarms (very important when claiming on insurance), hired some rental skis and was able to claim the full GBP400 + cost of hire skis back on the insurance when I got home.
Would have been screwed without the cover.

Re:Travel Insurance

Fourth year with Direct Travel, Europe, multiples of 47 days travel, inc multiples of 17 winter sports, to which you can add.

GBP66 inc loyalty bonus. That is for two of us. GBP50 excess, but we have saved that four times over.

Nat west advantage gold bank account gives you free travel insurance for you and all your family, and includes free upgrades to winter sports cover too. That includes your skis and equipment, as well as medical cover etc.
I think other banks do similar packages too. It pays to choose your bank provider carefully )

Re:Travel Insurance

Is GBP350 enough to cover broken or lost skis?

Also they mention you are covered to ski on or off piste (with an instructor) but what if we are out sledging and one of us breaks a leg? is there something else that I should be looking for on the policy?

Karen

Re:Travel Insurance

GBP350 should be enough to cover any skis (unless they are top end).
You need to bear in mind that skis are not usually replaced on a new-for-old basis. I.e. if the skis are 2 years old then you will get less money for them. I was lucky that my skis were 3 days old when they were nicked so I got the full replacement cost.

In terms of off piste, you will get medical treatment if you are off piste (they arnt just going to shake their head at you and refuse to land the helicopter) but your insurance may not cover the costs for the medical people (thousands of pounds for a helicopter, morphine etc). In Mayrhoffen in December, one of my mates was boarding in the trees and dislocated his shoulder on a tree stump. He had to stumble at least 200 metres back to the piste so he could claim on insurance. An extreme example I know but you know how petty insurance comapneis can be.

Re:Travel Insurance

Just out of interest I just thought i would let you know that if you go through www.quidco.com you will get 14% (at Direct Travel) of the total policy back in cash.

I use this cashback site quite a lot, especially for xmas presents and always check if i am buying online. Especially with More than I offer to get all family members policies on the net and go through quidco to get the cash back sometimes it is GBP75.

anyway its not a sales pitch but thought it might be of interest to consider. After all its better in your pocket than the company and last year I got GBP300 cash back just through clicking through their website.

Karen
