Boot Bags as cabin luggage

Hi folks,

I'm kinda new to skiinng so I'll be firing questions for a while :-)

I've just bought a nice new shiny bootbag to carry my skiboots around in. Can you take them onboard a plane as cabin luggage or do you have to book them in as hold luggage? Physically I reckon they're small enough to fit in overhead lockers but obviously they woudlnt be particularly light with my size 11's in them.

Anyone know?

Cheers,
Lee

Re:Boot Bags as cabin luggage

This issue has surfaced on a few previous threads and, unfortunately, the position seems to clear as mud

From what I have read, it seems that some airlines will allow them, others won't and, to make matters worse, this may not even be consistent at each end of the trip. Then you have airport security to negotiate - again no consistency with some happy to let them through while others aren't.

A lot of people on the site recommend stuffing your boots into your suitcase for better protection of the boots and less chance that somebody will accidentally or deliberately lift them from the carousel at the other end.

Finally, there is the vexed question of baggage charges - it you check them in, you run a real risk of being overweight even if you get away without having to pay per bag.

One enterprising member of the forum actually posted a picture a while back of their group wearing their boots at the airport and claiming that they travelled in them to get around baggage charges, etc

Re:Boot Bags as cabin luggage

Hi, got back from Bulgaria a week ago. I have my own boots and checked them in when we got to the airport, as did the rest of our party with their own boots. We booked with Inghams and flew with Monarch. No-one was charged for the boot bags themselves or excess luggage, even though most people also had another case/bag too. No probs on way back either.

Re:Boot Bags as cabin luggage

Boot bags have to go as checked in baggage. They are supposed to form part of your baggage allowance, ie 5kg for boot bag, 15kg for luggage = 20kg total.
Personally, I pack boots in my suitcase, saving carrying an extra bag, and also saving potential damage to boots as they will get thrown about a bit at airports.
That leaves 1 suitcase and a ski bag to cart about. I dont understand why anyone would want to travel with a separate boot bag to be honest.

This seems to suggest that they were trying to charge the skiing equipment rate for the boot bag - I would not accept this at all :!:

Given that skis (or golf bags) have to go through special outsize areas , etc, you can see that the airlines can argue that there may be some tiny sliver of justification for the additional charge. However, a ski boot bag should be treated no differently than any other regular sized luggage (and if you packed them into a suitcase, the issue wouldn't even arise). Anything else is even more of a rip-off than usual

Re:Boot Bags as cabin luggage

I believe that quite a bit of the overcharging that carriers/airlines/T.O's seem to be indulging in right now is down simply to not knowing their product.

I would always put my boots in my main case, locked, and transfer my underwear and thermals ) into my hand luggage.

A friends' daughter went through Bristol with ski boots in hand luggage last year. Airport "securidee" refused to allow them through and took them off her. She purchased another pair of boots in resort, and reported her original pair were not at Bristol on her return.

Expensive ski trip.

The boot bag is an isosceles triangle so maybe a little too big to fit in the over-head compartments.
Stumped, if you ask me :(

 I should just wear 3 pairs of trousers and 2 pairs of salopettes, 3-4 t-shirts under 2 ski jackets, 4 pairs of ski socks and my ski boots, my helmet and just walk on the plane... I wonder what their reaction would be..

Hmm, I'm just off the phone to Ryanair and they explained to me that my ski bag and boot bag count as 1 item. They are allowing an overall weight of 32kg. Not too shabby. Just wrap some clothes around the skis, same with the helmet, there's quite a bit of space left in the ski bag as well in the boot bag where the helmet sits.. Might not even need a suitcase.. :)
So anybody flying with Ryanair - There's your answer about ski luggage!

Re:Boot Bags as cabin luggage

I booked through Crystal and they tried to charge me GBP30 for ski carraige (which includes a boot bag). I argued that Thomson(the airline)only charge GBP15 and they agreed to charge me the same. I took my boots as hand luggage in a small Salomon wheely case. I told them at check in and the response was 'Are there any sharpe objects or liquids in the bag?' I said 'No, only my ski boots. The same question was then repeated to me again and I just said 'No'. There were no problems at security and it was very clear on the xray that there were ski boots in my bag. It was fine on the way back too. (Gatick and Toulouse).

I never had any problems taking them as hand luggage on my last two trips either.

:-)

A lot of airports are owned by different companies, although it feels like it sometimes BAA don't own them all

Airlines themselves can put restrictions on what you can put in hand luggage.

Back in the days when Moonboots were the height of apres ski fashion I owned a pair

Floppy foam things, very light and squashy!

I was heading to a place that had lots of snow and needed to wear them on arrival but Bristol Airport refused to allow me to take them in my hand luggage. So, I made the queue wait whilst I repacked my suitcase to accommodate their stupidity.

Perhaps being in that bit of Zumerset does something to kill the brain cells?
I love Easyjet. Use them 4 to 5 times a year.

In my experience, they are early more times than they are late. And have never been seriously late, but have been 20/30 min early several times.

20Kgms baggage, unlike some of the TO's.

12 Kgms for skis, unlike most of the TO's. GBP16.50 each way, cheaper than most. So you can figure out how many pairs of skis this might mean?

They have some flexibility, should you need to change your flights, and it doesn't cost much.

Then there is the hand baggage allowance. 550 x 400 x 200. (or thereabouts!), with reasonable weight. Have just invested in an oversize rucsac, so can pack back to this size as hand luggage. Will more than double the volume from my previous rucsack.

Re the issue of priority boarding. If you are solo, thats not an issue, you only need one seat. From the UK, many Easyjet flights are boarded through the ramp, but from Europe, many involve the bus. As stated, being last on the bus has a clear advantage. Even if you are on the last bus, then a couple should be able to sit together. I often fly solo, and most times have managed to get a seat by the emergency exit, ie extra leg space, I need it.

I don't waste time turning up early, and would never pay priority booking.

Re:Boot Bags as cabin luggage

I have to admit I have never had a problem with Easyjet, but then I have never taken a ski trip with them either, nor Ryanair for that matter.
My personal opinion regarding a ski trip is to make it as stress free as possible. Therefore, checking in and having allocated seats is a massive plus for me, as it also means we dont need to hurry down to the gate ages before boarding commences, or get involved in all that unecessary edging and pushing and rudeness that goes hand in hand with the vast majority or Easyjet and Ryanair passengers. Of course, if you dont care where you sit, I guess it doesnt matter. I like to be able to have some choice where I sit when I check in, so I would much rather get to the airport for when check in opens, get a decent seat allocated there and then, then go and chill out in the airport lounge or departure area.
The charter airlines I have flown with dont charge as much as either of the budget airlines (Monarch, First Choice, Thomas Cook) for ski carriage either (last season GBP15 return, this season between GBP20 and GBP30 return).
However, having experienced British Airways service, comfort, reliability, and relatviely low cost, I would now always use them GIVEN THE CHOICE. 23kg of checked in baggage, skis with a max weight of 32kg at no extra cost, and flight prices on many european routes which are comparable with many of the charter and budget airlines when you add in all the other little bits.

Easyjet gets my vote over Ryanair every time, but they would be way down my prefered carrier list when it comes to taking a ski trip.

I disagree. If you check in early enough with charter or scheduled flights, you get a choice of where you sit, if you are polite enough to the staff of course.
If you are travelling with friends or family, then you DO get to choose who you sit next to, to a degree.
Maybe you arent fussy about where you sit, Ise, but I am, and I know a lot of other people who are - which is proven by the so called scrum you mentioned.

Re:Boot Bags as cabin luggage

BA used to fly into Innsbruck from Gatwick. You will be aware that Stansted is not served by scheduled airlines, only the budgets and charters (with maybe the odd exception here and there).

If you want scheduled, you have to use London, Bham or Manchester.

Easyjet bought all BAs routes into Innsbruck last year, which is why you are left with no choice. You could of course have booked direct with TCX or FCA, whoever is flying out of STN this season.....

Or you could have flown to Salzburg, or taken BA to Munich.....

Psht no question, pack them with your suitcase. It's nuts to back them in a bag. I do agree with someone outright stealing them. Take it from someone whose traveled internationally with their ski stuff and have had their stuff trashed. I had a BRAND NEW 110$ ski bag that was destroyed by the lousy clueless and useless TSA. Stay smart and pack them. Besides they work WONDERS for packing bottles of schnaps and wine in.

Don't even get me started on overweight luggage , A lot my hard earned Euros have gone into the pockets of....well whom ever they go to. So what if I was trying to pack 16 bottles into my sack :p

Happy travels

Re:Boot Bags as cabin luggage

Im amazed that they allow boots as cabin bags, but if you can get away with it then fine. I personally would not want the hassle at the start of my holiday if they say no or have changed the rules. Your boots are that important, if they are damaged or lost then that could well ruin your holiday. It is not worth the risk, put them in a good quality hard suitcase and do not exceed the weight limit set by the airline on the website.

Re:Boot Bags as cabin luggage

Blimey, I always use a boot bag, had the boot bag some 13 years, no damage to boot bag still in perfect working
order it was a freebee when I brought a pair of boots, the only issue I would have with the boot bag is it has Livigno sport printed all over it. So my point is how many people out there have actually had their ski gear damaged or lost in transit ?. :)

Here's one. OH had a pair of skis written off by baggage handling at Gatwick. Some bright spark must have driven a baggage handling vehicle over the tips. The tyre tracks on the bag should have given us a clue really, but hey, everyone is in a hurry to get home having waited 1 hour or more for the skis to come down the carousel causing chaos.

Air Canada lost 2 pairs of my skis and a pair of boots last season. Technically not lost I guess, they knew they had left them in Toronto. The problem was I was a couple thousand miles away in Calgary.

The only time I have ever used a boot bag I checked it in and the airline lost it. It was on a Varig flight to Rio. The lost luggage staff struggled with the concept of what ski boots were!

Re:Boot Bags as cabin luggage

The airports, instead of claiming on the travel insurance I just sacked it up and paid for the rental myself.. wasn't worth the hassle of a claim (wasn't going to bring my skis across the country quicker).

BA lost my luggage on the way back from said trip (wasn't returned for 2 weeks) and it got to the point of threatening legal action without some sort of compensation and they still weren't interested, so again just let it fly.

That was the first day of terminal5 mind you so they would have had thousands of complaints to deal with.

It was all a bit messy, as you can't claim from the airport, once you have left with the luggage. I mean, who unpacks their skis to check for damage, before heading for the car park. So in the end we claimed on our household contents policy, which included the necessary cover at that time. The skis were a total write off :(

Re:Boot Bags as cabin luggage

In my case I eventually got compensation from the airline but I was working for a tour operator who booked a lot of flights with Varig. Without that connection I think I could still be waiting - 15 years later :(

Re:Boot Bags as cabin luggage

Ian, I have put boots in the suitcase and will do probably again. If my boots were in my ski bag then if it went missing I would lose it all which for a weeks holiday would be pretty shitty so best to split up the risk! Besides it is easy done with a 23kg suitcase allowance.
