Just skinning up the hill and found these guys, on skis/skins you're quiet enough to get close, normally they'd take cover when they heard you coming.

Wow the one and only time i`ve seen chamios was in Wengen on a hike up Kleine Scheidegg.But a chap in the village kept them as pets or were they pets :shock:

actually, they're not the only dumb animals in those woods, Air Glaciers winched a couple of Belgians out at the end of last week who'd taken a short cut :roll:

Nice pics. Spotted a small herd of them a few years in open ground above the piste in Flaine. A minor avalanche had left a patch of bare grass on the side of the mountain and they were grazing it untroubled by the skiers passing by on the slope below.

As regards dumb animals, I remember one time on Elba island, walking down from the highest mountain, we took a wrong turning and ending up across on the next hill. The only problem was, it was still smouldering from a major forest fire and it was pretty scary making our way through the scorched forest. We eventually found our way out into a carpark where a number of fire crews were taking a well earned break. I'm sure they thought we were mad. Even though we were there by accident, I am sure everybody would have assumed we were complete idiots if we had run into trouble or needed rescuing and perhaps, on reflection, we were :oops:

doesn't sound even nearly as stupid as this pair to be honest, they must have been here all week, ridden up on the lift each day, I can't see how they failed to notice it was a cliff face :roll: Still, it's given the locals something to talk about :lol:

The little blighters allways hanging around Cluse Mijoux all most tame last week saw them browsing right next to D472 main rd.

set yourself up on photobucket.. photobucket.com i think then upload the picture on there. then copy the link on the right of the photo.

My preference is Flickr (.com) which you can use yoru Yahoo account through should yo uhave one.. just copy and paste the suitable HTML code for the image size or the URL of the image and stick em between the image tags in the post reply box.. Easy :wink:

I prefer Picasa for ease of use, though I have Flickr as well :D

I was more thinking that it's quieter than snow shoes, you've scared most stuff off for miles around if you're on snow shoes.

Picasa is great, now available for the Mac !

Been telling people we saw sheep on the slope at Flaine...We were on the Gondola and they were a way away, but I expect they were chamois. They looked like little black sheep though.
And me a farmers daughter too.... :oops:

Not a Chamois... but saw this impressive looking fella by the side of the road on the Col du Lauteret two years back...

He was almost close enough to touch and didn't seem bothered about us stopping next to him - although with those horns he's probably not too bothered about anything much... 8)

amazing photo :!: obviously a European Ibex of course. The horns were evolved to defend against bears, lynx and wolves and of course predictably led to them being much prized and just as predictably being hunted to near extinction, they've recovered well and there's reckoned to be around 300,000 in the alps nowadays
