Ski resorts fill up despite hard times - Swissinfo report

Ski resorts fill up despite hard times

We had that impression here, without much science it looked that there were more lights on than usual around the place.

But, if it was busier last week I'm not sure it's not quieter than usual right now, it's completely dead around the area. That would be weird if it's true, busier at peak time but quieter when there's bargains to be had, seems odd in these credit crunch times :?:

Not my specialist subject but with nearly everywhere having good snow there is not a last minute rush to chase for it so as a result all the venues have to remain competitive to attract the punters.
Speaking to my local ski outlet befor xmas they said they were having a bigger rush on then for equipment then they normally do and the common theme was ' Can't sell our house, so sod it lets have another holiday'. The credit crunch maybe biting but its the jam in the house market which is really causing some folk headaches.

Or maybe people neither want nor need to sell their house?

I've just had two weeks in Les Gets and it was pretty busy. Off to Hinterglemm next week, so will be able to compare peak with low season then.

Yes, I agree with that comment there is that feeling out there, I don't think the ski industry will feel the crunch till next season. Thats why I am concerned about the increased prices in the early bird brochure's it smells of burying you head in the sand syndrome, all it will do is to delay booking to hold out for a bargin

The article quotes Gstaad and Verbier, I did wonder if some of the people who might have gone to the Caribbean or something switched to the cheaper option of a ski holiday.

Maybe, except that it's cheaper to get a stay in the Caribbean, broadly speaking. Though if you wanted to book Necker Island I expect it would cost more than your average Verbier 4* over New Year :D
