Freestyle Skiing?

Good evening ladies and gentlemen.. First off, Happy new year to you all.

Now, I am new to these forums and this is my first post.
I've been skiing since January 2008 - I was given a surprise 18th birthday present and it was a skiing trip to Vamorel in France - Now, this was the time of my life.. So much fun and it's incredible how much peace skiing can bring to the human mind. Skiing is now my most favourite thing in the world.

I live in Glasgow and for those of you who know about it, I can easily travel to the indoor ski slopes at Braehead - Xscape, so for a while now I've been going here..
Since then I've slowly built a love towards freestyle skiing - I get such a rush from trying it..
I was just generally wondering if there are any freestyle skiers on here? Not even professional, just anyone who likes to try the odd kicker or box/rail slide or even those who've stomped their first 180!
I'd like to talk with them to get an idea of how they got better!

I've recently bought my own equipment - Dynastar Nothing But Trouble skis (Twintips) and a pair of Salomon SPK Kaos boots. Great gear, love it.

Cheers, take care and happy skiing!

Thanks for the compliment there Ian.. Just determination I guess, can't let it put you off.
Speaking of which, I had a bad accident almost 3 months ago now - I went off a pretty big kicker and it threw me high up and landed on an air bag ski's down (as you're meant to do).. but the air bag itself was about 10 feet high and I done a flip (because of the momentum of landing, my ski's had stuck to the surface of the air bag) and I landed on my head on hard snow.. Was paralised for a good while, taken to hospital and treated for a broken spine - Turns out I'd severly damaged the muscle in my pelvis and in the bottom of the spine - L4 section or something they said.
So for a years skiing I already have a little story to tell people - was very lucky to walk again though :!:

Re:Freestyle Skiing?

Thanks IceGhost! :-)

Have many people been to Alpe D'Huez? :-) I'm booked up to go on the 24th of this month - Can't wait!
I read that there are two snowparks (anyone know if they're any good?) And also they have a flood-lit slope for night time skiing - I've always wanted to try this, anyone ever done it? How was it? :-)

Cheers!

Re:Freestyle Skiing?

Don't know about the park but remember to ski within your limits, there are some seriously big hits and have witnessed some people get hurt pretty bad. The progression is generally pretty good in parks about just now, start small and work up. They had some pretty big problems at RCR but there was no real progression-people hitting 60 footers without any jump experience=bad times. Night skiing is cool as but pretty limited. Something everyone should try..

Of course, I have started small :-) I hear there is one park for beginners and one for experts - I'll be lingering around the beginner park.. Hurting yourself gets you nowhere is what I've learned
Night time skiing does sound pretty cool, I seen an image of it featured on the Alpe D'Huez website;
http://www.alpedhueznet.com/popup.php?filename=image_uploader/photos/large/adh-night-skiing-slope.jpg&pic_height=333

Pretty limited like you said, but can't judge it until you've tried it at least.. The good thing about it is the price is included in the lift pass so no extra cost :-) Still unhappy about the prices of lift passes mind you, but we can't do anything about it

Re:Freestyle Skiing?

baillie, I'm looking at getting into freestyle skiing.

I've been skiing about a year like you and I go to Chill Factor in Manchester. Also like you it has become my most favourite thing to do. I'm hooked.

So anyway, freestyling. Did you get any tuition or did you just throw yourself on some rails/jumps and hope for the best?
Once I get back from my holiday in February (The missus won't let me go before then in case a break something) I'm going to be going to some GROM Camps at chill factor. It's basically a bunch of professional freestylers doing some mass coaching. GBP30 for 3 hours including all slope fees. Don't know if you have heard of it but I'll attach the link to their website. I'm pretty sure they run them up in Scotland too.

http://www.salomongromcamps.co.uk/

Up here in Scotland we don't get these things such as the chill factor - we do get freestyle nights in the Xscape in Braehead however and I've had a number of freestyle coaching sessions - The instructor I had is fantastic - Made me really confident with rails and I can do them with ease now, feels great to be able to do it! I'm sure the price was 2 and half hours of coached session for GBP35, which isn't too bad.
The chill factor stuff sounds cool mate, hope you have a lot of fun and be careful to not get hurt too badly, eh? :-)

I just realised that made no sense - I didn't know the Chill Factor was an indoor ski slope! The Xscape is exactly the same, just a different name ;) Hopefully the rest of that quote will now make more sense than before :-)
