Igloos

We started this the other day but went of to do some other stuff and then it snowed on the half built one which is why there's not a clear block line here :

The other day the snow was awful for this, no cohesion at all so you couldn't make snowballs easily, once packed the blocks solidify pretty quick especially if you work the snow first to reduce the amount of air trapped in. I blame this for the poor angle on the lowest courses which has made the igloo taller than I'd have liked. Still it's cosy inside and you could sleep there, we'll do a good low season deal on accommodation

oops  wonky door frame, soon fixed with a quick swipe with a snow saw

and then just sit inside and relax

and what I learnt today was that you probably need a better plan than to quickly build an igloo in an emergency :D

Re:Igloos

It's brilliant 8) You'll have to look after it and make sure it lasts for the season.

You could add rooms, lighting, a bar......

I'll be round to sit in your igloo quite soon :D

I see, that's the sort of age I was guessing would be interested. We were thinking of doing some sort of activity thing for around those ages, snow shoe a little way, build an igloo or something which is why I was messing around with them, but I'm not sure we can do a build quick enough without them getting cold. Time for a drink and a think

A friend of mine built a quinzhee in his back garden and slept in it most of the winter. He said he had some of his best nights sleep in it.

http://www.billcasselman.com/winter_words/quinzhee_winter_shelter_word.htm

Trencher

Re:Igloos

I've not heard that word before, we call it a shovel-up normally. It's used where there's not enough snow to dig in for snow cave. Igloos generally need good hard snow like deep wind slab. So there's a number of methods to get a shelter depending on the snow types.
