Re:Weather in Zillertall (Zell am Ziller)

Not sure about -30C but, yes, it does look likely to be seriously cold this weekend and again around the middle of next week.

Most of the Northern / Central Alps ski resorts will have a couple of days with maximum temperatures well below freezing; max temp of -10C to -15C will be common, and colder spots (avoid chairlifts in shadow if you can!!!) will be looking at -20C, maybe beyond.

So, yes, good base layers, warm top layers (lots), good (very good!) gloves, glove inners and hand-warmers if your hands get cold), get a buff / face protector... and plenty of stops for hot chocolate! 8)

In fact, it may even get cold enough for Ross to put a shirt on...

I've skied and climbed in those sort of temperatures and it's brisk for sure but your tears won't freeze, they leave your body at body temperature and have a low freezing point as they have saline in them. If they dripped onto the outside of a face-mask they' freeze certainly but that would happen at only a couple of degrees below freezing point.

Great! We're heading out to St Anton with Tony and Skiddadle on Sunday. I've been looking forward to some cold temps. I bought a 3in1 Spyder jacket last season and It's only ever been cold enough to wear the outer part of it once. Bring it on!

yes obviously you're drawing cold in through the nose and it will happen, that's in part why frostbit in the nose isn't uncommon along with limited blood flow in the area of course.

And, of course, comparison of "nasal stalactites" makes for great conversation during the coffee stops on cold days... the combination of a full beard and a streaming head cold is always a winner... 8)

I skied a couple of years ago in Morillon and it was -23, while I was active it was fine but on the chairs it was bitter, never been so cold in thirty years of skiing. God knows what -47 will be like. Good luck
