Alpendorf St. Johan in Pongau

I noticed this site had nothing on Alpendorf and St. Johan in Pongau so I thought I'd add something.

BTW, I am an American working as a ski instructor in Alpendorf. I have also skied all over the Austrian, Swiss and French Alps for the last 20 years.

Alpendorf is an exceptional ski area. We have lots and lots of easy runs, quite a few steep pistes, some nice (challenging)tree runs, and a lift system second to none. Most of our lifts are high speed 6 person chairs, or gondolas.

You can get on a lift in Alpendorf and skin into Wagrain and Flachau. Your ski pass is valid on about 260 lifts!!! You can easily ski Alpendorf, Wagrain, Flachau, Klein Arl, Flachauwinkl, and Sauchensee without driving.

We are not a famous resort (although Herman Meier learned to ski here), but we have world class skiing.

Many, many English speaking guests frequent our resort, so most of the restaurants and hotels have English speaking staffs. If you are not an advanced skier, and/or are concerned about the language, come to my ski school and sign up for 5 or 6 days of ski lessons. We will improve your skiing ability, take you to a different restaurant every day (translate if necessary), let you race your friends, and give you a wonderful farewell party on Friday.

I have skied Vail, Breckenridge, Jackson Hole, Salt Lake city resorts, West Virginia, Canada, Val d'Isere, Tignes, Chamonix, St. Anton, Ischgl, Portes du Soleil, Three Valleys (France), Grindelwald, Zermatt, and many other resorts, and I picked Alpendorf as the place where I wanted to work!

It's a great place!

Jeff

Hi riplingj, i'm pleased to say i've skied alpendorf, albeit on a trip over from wagrain!
was there april just gone first week, when if don't know if you remember but there was a nice dump of snow sunday evening/all day monday! was the last week of the season! I will happily say this was my favourite ski trip ever! Not least because i discovered Tiroler Grostl!  We only went over Alpendorf day once, with our instructor but was great! Do you wear the purple and white jackets?? I noticed a few english instructors talking toghether in those jackets!

I will definetly revisit the area again as i didn't see radstadt, flachauwinkle and zauhesee (sp?)!

Lovely place and a must visit for anybody!

chris

Re:Alpendorf St. Johan in Pongau

I had my first ever ski trip to St. Johan in Pongau 26 years ago and loved the place. Wont even try to describe the mountain as I daresay the whole lift system has changed. Fond memories, especially about being smitten by our gorgeous Australian ski instructor. She was a vision !!! But thats another story!!! And the answer to your question is 'NO' but I can still picture her now.

Re:Alpendorf St. Johan in Pongau

I have only ever skied in Alpendorf. It is a brilliant area for all levels of skiing. we have always stayed in St Veit, until recently when we did a self catering in Radstadt.

We put our kids into ski school every time too and they love it.

the only time i have encountered queues is on a morning at the gondola to get up the mountain - somethimes it is a bit stressful especially at school holiday times.

we always use the same ski school and they always remember us every time we go and we have never had a problem with them. the have the week lessons and then put on a presentation for all classes on a friday after the skiing. even the adults get medals!!!

my hubbies family are all excellent skiers and they all come over from norwich and meet us there as they enjoy the atmosphere of the 'family' holiday. they love watching the kids progress through the week of lessons too.

i keep saying i want to try somewhere new, but we always end up in Alpendorf, it is only a 7 hour drive from where we are in germany.

Just thought i would put my 2p's worth.

Tracy

We have skied in Alpendorf for numerous years (7 in total) and have always had a great time - I would recommend the Hotel Sonnoff - great food/ accomodation.

The only downside to Alpendorf (if there is one) in order to ski Flachau, Kleinarl etc you have to ski over and with picking up children from ski school at 3:00 you are very restricted how far you can go.

Great place, and great skiing.

Re:Alpendorf St. Johan in Pongau

Hi riplingj - thanks for putting Alpendorf on the map. You are right that there does not seem to be much on this forum about Alpendorf (or indeed the whole sportwelt/amade region - acres of pistes, 25 resorts all on one pass...fantastic fun). Wife and I have skied many places before also but loved this area so much we bought a place here. May have to look you up when we are next out there.

Taskey - agree great place for families. Also beautiful in summer - we drive over and take our basset hound with us.

Swskier - know what you mean about Tiroler Grostl :)
Hi Bandit - thanks for the welcome. Our Basset is a little star. He curls up on a duvet with his favourite toy and snoozes most of the time. We stop every so often at services for short breaks and let him have a quick walk and he's always done very well with the journey.

Not trying to hide my bias for the region. Love the place, bought a place there (as I said earlier), don't think anyone could really miss the connection.
Doesn't make my comments invalid.
So much on this forum covers the high profile and expensive resorts of the world, very little on the lesser known ones.

Hi guys

I have spent the last 3 nights sitting up until midnight looking for some cheaper accommodation for a family of four. I have already booked the same hotel in Kitzbuhel that we were in last year but fancied going somewhere different so have been looking at Solden, Alpendorf, St Johan im Pongau as well. I have made some enquiries at Alpendorf hotels and they are coming back with prices twice the price of Kitzbuhel - am I missing something here about Alpendorf being less expensive than the well know resorts?

We are looking at 3 or 4 star hotel, half board with 6 day ski passes so I can compare apples with apples to my current booking

Any suggestions would be really appreciated

Carol

There seems to be a bit of fussing over 'commercial' interests and posting on this thread.
I will 'come clean'. I own and run guest house/chalet in Radstadt within Ski Amade.

This doesn not mean that the information I have to offer is rubbish or bias. There was, of course a reason for me to move to this area and that is the fact that the area is awesome!

So please don't cut me down as I live here and run a business. The UK market is quite small compared to the other countries within Europe but I can only write in English so like to use English speaking forums!

Radstadt has about 4500 guest beds in the winter. It is a quiet and family orientated town.
The local mountain in Radstadt has a ski school, nursery slope and an 8 man gondola. for 2009/10 there is also going to be a new cafe/apres bar at the base of the lift.... don't know much more about that yet as it isn't open yet!

The mountain is quite small and can offer a learner group a weeks worth of skiing. For more experienced skiers/ridersit may be a little limited after day 2. But at the base of the Altenmarkt side of the mountain you can get regular shuttle buses up to Zauchensee which is huge and awesome! The ski school here is run by Michi Walchofers' father!

Zauchensee links into Flachau Winkl, (via a comedy shuttle train tractor thing). The winks also links into Kleinarl... from Kleinarl you can grab a shuttle bus down to Wagrain... and Wagrain links into Alpendorf.

Radstadt also offers regular busaccess to Flachau, Fageralmand Reiteralm.

Radstadt has a Penny Markt, Spa, M-Preis and a Hofer/Aldi. So there are plenty of places to grab stuff in normal priced supermarkets. The bars and restaurants are genrally quite quiet (even in peak season) so it is ot a good place for party apres!

Anyhow... there is a bit about Radstadt...

Anyhow... there is a bit about Radstadt...

can't see what the problem is really, if people have an interest in a prticular resort be it through a business or the fact they have been going for the last 20 years then they are entitled to an opinion. I'm quite sure that were all intelligent enough to formulate our own opinios.

There are far too many wannabe admins on here sometimes, i'm surprised that Tony H and Dave Mac haven't been castrated for there obvious enthusiasm of both Mayrhofen and Niederau yet

I don't know really know how J2ski is run but I would guess that Admin has to make a few bucks like we all do, so if people want to advertise their services on the site they have to pay, and people coming in under the radar trying to obtain free advertising are frowned upon by that great administrator in the sky 8) 8)

...but only two real ones... 8)

Folk with (commercial) interests in particular resorts are welcome to post information and respond to relevant queries, but the forum is for discussion not advertising (as Ian says, we can do that too - just not in here).

austrian-adventures has it about right, so that's fine.

Anyway, back on-topic please peeps... and remember you don't have to quote the entire message you're replying to as that just duplicates the info in the thread.
