As crap as it is, theres nothing you or I can do about it. This years lift passes are going to cost considerably more than we had bargained for as a result.

I went away in October for a weekend and got 1.23 and sad at the time that I would wait to buy Euros for skiing as that rate was the worst I had ever got. Good move, Tony

Re:Can Someone Stop the Euro dropping!!!!!!!!!

Only thing you could do is limit the area you ski and buy a pass for a smaller domian. Not ideal but depending where you're going and how much you want to explore, you could save quite a few GBP.

We're going to Saint Martin de Belleville for New Year week and I've decided to get the Menuires/St Martin pass (172Euro) and upgrade 1 or 2 individual days for Val Thoren (17.50Euro per day) or 3 vallees (22Euro). I think that'll be plenty to keep me happy, especially as we've got some near-beginners in the group.

It might work out similar for other resorts?

Also for any beginners, look out for special lift passes for beginners / limited lifts. Might be worth it for the first day.

2 weeks today, I'll be on my way. Can't wait! :D

Re:Can Someone Stop the Euro dropping!!!!!!!!!

I agree - it is rubbish. When I look at euro prices I just pretend its a sterling price. That way, if it works out that I pay a bit less than the euro price then it's a bonus. However, if you divide the lift pass price into an hourly rate then I think it's still good value. I reckon I'll be out on the snow for about 7 hrs a day & am skiing for 8 days, which means an hourly rate of GBP3.82. Let's face it, what activities can you do for that price these days? It's OK Tony_H you don't have to think of any ) .

There's very little you can do at my local sports centre for less than that per hour. We're self catering, so I guess it will be pasta, pasta & more pasta, but quite frankly I can happily put up with that if it means I can still afford to go skiing!

Hey look at it this way, at least you all had it so cheap for the last few years. Try earning your salary in euros and then getting stung for a 230euro lift pass  Not to mention the 8euro beer or 50euro lunch in Courchevel
At lest your skiing this winter....ACL reconstruction surgery so no snow for a year!!!!
Can I ask if anyone has any good early season pictures please keep posting them....clutching at straws here. :)
Re:Can Someone Stop the Euro dropping!!!!!!!!!

I wonder what the resorts will be thinking, will the restaurants drop there prices to encourage us away from self catering I don't think so , so will we hear hard luck stories from retailers of people not spending in resorts, we will all have a budget to spend so I'm thinking that I might not eat out as often as I would normally do, I can't see me missing the mountain lunch time so I will eat out in the evening less often. So resort restaurants will suffer. Will they bury there heads in the sand, I wonder?

Re:Can Someone Stop the Euro dropping!!!!!!!!!

There are a number of reasons why Sterling has fallen so sharply recently. So to turn that around, you need to look at those reasons...

We have seen the 'base rate' set by the Bank of England fall to 2%, the lowest for decades.

So if anyone has the ear of the Mervin King, the Governor and the rest of the guys, and suggest that perhaps they raise rates several hundred basis points, Sterling will become more valuable.

The cost of beer / food amnd lift passes will fall, in our terms...

Then come April - they can drop it back down to 2%!!!!!

Simple...

Yes, I know there are loads of other issues that move currencies values, but I can't go much lower - can it??

Re:Can Someone Stop the Euro dropping!!!!!!!!!

The weakness of the pound is less to do with a low interest rate and more about concerns regarding 'UK plc' being able to service its now massive debts.

The idea of buyingfrom the TOs is a good one as most will have bought their currencies in the spring.

Next season's holiday prices are likely to be horrific though, or some seemingly cheap deals will result in operators going pop.

Re:Can Someone Stop the Euro dropping!!!!!!!!!

Yes - as I said - there are lots of reasons why Sterling is weak. But I bet Merv and Co can afford their lift passes with ease.

I'm going to check with my TO regarding the passes in advance next week. Damn good idea.

Why would they drop the prices. Lets face it at the majority of ski resorts as much as they would like our money, the Brits are still in the minority so whats it to them!!
You might find the occassional bar may do something to get you through the doors but as for restaurants we are not big eaters!!!
Looks like its goulash, goulash and goulash for lunch!!!

Re:Can Someone Stop the Euro dropping!!!!!!!!!

Those of us who are DIY are certainly going to take a wee hit with our lift pass costs this winter.

Six day week Niederau pass:
Inghams GBP130
Crystal GBP133

In resort 150.4 Euros, at 1.07E/GBP = GBP140.56, ie 5/7% higher.

So, if you have booked with a TO, and have not pre-booked your lift pass, you will make a bit of a saving by booking before you go.

If you leave it until you are on the transfer bus, you will pay the resort price in Euros, at whatever exchange rate/commision your card co decides.
Hooray, I am quids in having booked Hopfgarten HB with Crystal back last January and prebooked lift passes and skis. It still doesn;t stop my hubby saying my advance booking of several ski holidays a year is an illness and I need treatment for it!!

The question now is should I book with Inghams now for next Jan or wait and see if Sterling strengthens against the euro? Can't see it happening myself, particulary as Ms Merkel and her government have seen the blindingly abvious light and are not planning on printing huge amounts of money!!

any thoughts anyone?!

I go to French resorts on a regular basis and the evening restaurants are not busy, skiers from the local area's will not pay the inflated ski resort prices, so I would guess it is tight now for them so they will have to offer something to entice you to spend some money, the big bucks will be made in the local supermarkets.

I was considering paying for a single domain 3 valleys ski pass as well and then bolting on more explorative days here and there, but if you pay for a 6 day single domain ski pass plus 2 three valleys days you've spent more than you would have done on a 6 day 3 valley pass! I think it's all or nothing.

IF you are travelling with a TO, definitely book your passes now. We have just booked Milky Way and paid GBP150 ish for the area pass. The same pass currently offered on their websites is 180 Euros - a saving of alt least GBP25.

Basically all TOs have pre purchased lift passes in the summer at a far better exchange rate.

That combined with the fact I have got a great late deal from bournemouth has softened the blow of having to travel with a TO!

Roll on the 11th Jan!

One good thing to come of it. The visa gift cards I sent my daughters in the UK are worth 25% more than they were a while back :-)

Can anyone remember back to 92/93. I seem to remember the dollar being at 1.29 to the pound. When I look on sites that have records going back that far, they show it to have been a low for the pound of 1.48 dollars. I remember thinking at the time, that if it went a little further, we would have parity in the currencies. Is my memory failing me ?.

Trencher

We just came back from 3 Valleys. It was 3.5 euros for a hot choclate so we bought a bottle of rum and a hip flask to keep out the cold and made sarnies at breakfast.

Yes it hurts but the main reason for going is to ski right? So who cares if we can't have as many Vin Chauds and chips as we like just so long as the snow is good.

The price of the euro is frightening.
Just bought 400E cost me GBP406 !

Still, as I prebooked lift passes and even got 2 for price of 1, the saving of one will off set the other.

Yes, I also bought a hip flask, but pondering on what to fill it up with.

As I'm going to Andorra, can I purchase duty free at the airport, or better to wait 'till in resort ?

Looks like someone managed to stop the value of the pound against the Euro dropping today - about to go over 1.10 again. Or is this a calm before another storm with more interest rate cuts expected? How exciting!
