Looks like after my relentless pimping of North America in general I am heading to the Alps this year, your mountains better be good folks. Roll on January 25th.

bandit, pretty confident that you will not be where I am although I will be in Bourg at some point :wink:

And if you are I am loud, Scottish and on ridiculously large skis.

Sainte Foy but shhh don't want word getting out ha ha!

Staying in a nicely placed chalet which I think is ski in ski out? Not sure... just sorta went for it.

GBP1100 flights, transfers + accommodation (2 people) going from Edinburgh which is pretty handy for me.

Compared to the GBP1000 each for Canada before lift passes (GBP300) and any sort of food..

I got 7 nights in Mayrhofen (HB), 4 in Grindelwald (B&B), 4 in St. Anton (B&B), 4 days at New Year in Glasgow and a day in Newcastle, all travel, accomodation, ski-passes, for just over 1500 quid. Going with various peole, visiting family etc.

Took me a full 24 hours on the net to do it mind, but if you are prepared to do the work it pays off.

Reads very posh :D It's not a resort I have skied, but it has a lot of devotees in the Tarentaise :D

Why the :roll: ? One of the local folks I know is a rather good guide.

Was DIY!! Cheapest flights available at that. Things were going up in price so just bit the bullet and went for it.

One of the 'best kept secrets' piste skiing is limited but the off piste is seriously good. Haven't been there myself but I know a man that has (and he keeps going back).

Ive never stayed in Sainte Foy, but Ive skied a few days there from Tignes and Val D'Isere. Some of the best tree skiing I've done anywhere. And the mountain restaurants are great too.

I worked 2 winters in Banff about 6 years ago. Never skied in the states though.

I think so!
My only problem with Canada is the whole concept of 'out of bounds'

I should say that every day that I've skied S'te Foy it was dumping with snow - that was why we went ... cos the visibility was crap elsewhere.
So that may have influenced my opinion somehow :)

I ve also finished up in S'te Foy after heli skiing from La Thuile ( a whole lot cheaper than Canada and if the snow is good the skiing is superb.)

Ross - Sainte Foy has a reputation locally as the place where the instructors from Val D and La Ros head on their days off... if there's half decent snow you'll have an absolute blast.

I've not skiied there (yet) but have been told that the "family-friendly" accommodation and operators there mean that the off-piste gets tracked much less quickly than elsewhere.

Things may well have changed, but we were told by the ski patrol in Lake Louise if we were caught accessing certain areas from the 'ski area' we would have our lift tickets confiscated. If we skinned in , from the other side, then no problem.
Its a while ago and my memory may be hazy :( but I think thats what we were told

Hmm doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, there are "gates" to use as backcountry access points but there are no restrictions as long as you are not putting anyone in the ski area in danger by skiing certain aspects (of which there are a few in LL) but it would be daft to ski them. There are some excellent backcountry oppurtunities in LL espeially to the lookers left of Larch.

As I said, things may have changed. The only 'gate' I remember was to access the hike up to Purple bowl which was closed depending on conditions. No problem with that as any avalanche there could affect trails.

I am a self confessed 'grumpy old man' and the older I get the less I like being told what I can do )

I had 2 wonderful winters in Banff

:lol: Purple Bowl is actually in the ski area, ie not out of bounds, didn't get to hike it but elevator shaft looks awesome. :mrgreen:

that's one of the ski myths that'll be featuring in upcoming book, "Stuff Skiers Make Up" ) Which I reckon will sell around no copies at all )
