les carroz

hi
has anyone been to les carroz? thinking of spending a week there over xmas with the family. as we have never been skiing before, we were not sure what the snow conditions were likely to be like in december. it looks a nice resort, very traditional and the plus for us was the transfer time from geneva.
thanks.

I'd not call it traditional in any way, it's pretty standard French modern, nothing awful but not traditional. Otherwise, it would be ideal for you from what you say, good skiing, some nice nursery slopes higher up etc.

Re:les carroz

I did les carroz last march, I can see why people might call it traditional, i'd call it small and quiet and very french.

There are 2 places I would reccomend, L'agora restaurant - fantastic food and service (i fell in love with the waitress!) and the main bar on the corner opposite - fantastic cocktails, they really go to town!!

Skiing: links to several resorts, flaine is where most of the skiing is at, great views and a great variety of runs, try and do them all in a week, you'll struggle! Lift ques were never too bad either.

Only prob for me was french prices on the mountain, 2 bottles of fanta 500ml 11 euros. WHAT!!??

For a family hol i'd say - go go go!!

If it's the apres ski you're after - no no no!!

Think i've heard too much amy shitehouse??
Re:les carroz

I have never flown through, to or from Geneva, but If I am snowboarding in France I normally take the train to the airport and catch a transfer from there.

Completely irrelevant I know, but I just wanted to contribute.

Re:les carroz

I been there a couple of times links in to the Grand Massive which takes in not only Flaine but Morillion & Samoens, I really enjoyed the place but we did have fantastic snow powder every day.
Great place plenty of skiing and I would certainly go back.

Re:les carroz

Have been skiing the Grand Massif for the last 6 or 7 years this has been over Xmas and New Year, the last two years the conditions this early in the season ie Xmas 2006 were very poor and we travelled to Flaine and Avoriaz most days . Last Xmas conditions were much better but as the resort levels are quite low it is a gamble so early in the season. Saying that we will be arriving in Morillon on the 3rd Jan 2009
We ski in Les Carroz but have not stayed there the links to other areas ie Morillon, Samoens and Flaine are really easy and the whole area has something for everyone The nightlife is relatively quiet and there is not much to do during the day unless you ski but that is the same for every resort

Re:les carroz

Les Carroz is good for families and not too expensive.
Most of the skiing is up on a plateau but there are a few small drag near the bottom, and you can ski back down to the town if the snow is good. From what I can remember they have good snow cannon coverage too.

It's lost it's quaintness (unlike la Clusaz - but then I'm biased) and has sprawled a bit as it has grown. But it does give good access to Flaine, Samoens and Morillion so better for intermediates skiers who want to make the most of the huge area.

Flaine would be a better choice for beginners, although not picturesque. The nursery area is central and walk able from most of the accommodation except the Hameau. Have you looked at La Clusaz or Le Grand Bornand? Both are just an hour from Geneva, picturesque and good for beginners.

Re:les carroz

Going to Les Carroz for the first time next week. Have a varied bunch of skiers from complete newbies to me with about three weeks on snow. Ahwt runs are recommended for both beginners and intermediates and how hard / steep are they. Can never really tell from Piste maps.

Also any recommendations for restaurants, particularly anywhere that does Pizza. Not typically french i know but as a veggie thats pretty much all i get.

Thanks in advance

Linda

Re:les carroz

the blue runs down to les carozz and Morrillons are ideal for early intermediates and beginners ...there is one long green run to Morrillons that is excellent...as to restaurants on the mountain ..take packed lunches ..especially in Flaine Euro9 for soup and a coffee and a packet of walkers was Euro3.2 cheaper on the Samoens side though

Re:les carroz

We were there a couple of seasons ago and it was expensive on the hill. We also had an issue with the ski school arrangements (esf). Their meeting place, directly behind the office, led to a huge bottle neck, it was February, as there's one poma to take the kids up to the main access lifts onto the ski area. This lost a lot of time out of the kids lesson time and they were always returned to that point early for pickup. When we left our kids at the ski school we hiked the couple of hundred meters up to the lifts, certainly got you warmed up for the morning ski ahead.
