Well i went to the dry slope today! Thought i'd try gloucester out as i always go to churchill the local one to me! Was a mistake really found it quite boring to be honest and couldn't be bothered after 1 hour! Just two straight slopes! Very boring and shan't be returning! What a waste of petrol that was!

I'm off Wed/Thur and love the idea of hitting Zermatt, however it looks like thats when the snow/wind will hit it to. What do you think the chances are of getting any skiing in ? Or will I be sitting in the valley crying in my beer as I watch all the snow fall... but the lifts are closed.

My OH has been snow boarding to-day, not on a dry slope, real snow in Basingstoke. He went to fit a house full of windows, snowboards in the customers garage, they both went to top of hill and across field. Only about 4inches of snow, but good fun. Not fair.

You get 2 days out of 6 in other resorts if you want to on the lift pass, including Sauze or part of the Vialattea, Alpe d'Huez, Les 2 Alpes, or where i am going to have a day at Puy St Vincent: looks gorgeous.

Went skiing today!
Plymouth dry ski slope to try out my new boots. Can't say I had the best time. :cry: Having only ever snow skied before, I struggled to get a decent turn in. We managed an hour before knocking it on the head. Mind you,the views out over the A38 dual carriageway were spectacular. :lol:
Can't wait for Switzerland in January.

I'm going to a dry ski slope today. I'am very confident on snow (been doing it since I was 11) but I'm quite nervous because I've not been on a dry slope since I was 10 - 35 years ago! :shock:

Is it really difficult compared to snow...will i be able to stop? :?

May I respectfully correct you on that Dave?
I had a fear of flying for many years, and when you investigate it, it is actually a fear of crashing, not flying.

However, many people genuinely dont like flying, but it does not mean they have a fear of it.

Also, I reckon you can only say you dont like crashing if you have been involved in a crash, which is unlikely, as the majority of people involved in air crashes dont get out alive.

Sorry to be pedantic, but having spent some time investigating my own phobia and deep hidden fears, I can speak from experience!

3 Vallees start of Jan for a week and supposed to be going with a group at the start of March to Arraba. God knows if Arraba will come off with friends but g/friend and me will go no matter what.

Would love to find a real cheap 1 for myself as g/friend says she dont mind me going on me own in Feb!! Any ideas for Feb and cheap or any1 else going then?

Got ages to wait yet so its Kendal dry slope for now.

Just got a great deal for one in Oberau which is next to Neiderau with First Choice online.

1 week half board at the Gastof Dorferwirt for GBP217.50 from my local airport at Doncaster on 24th Jaanuary. All airports were available last night but they will be going fast at these prices.
Area list passes are GBP107, Skis GBP43. All sorted for GBP367.50 which is around GBP200 of the brochure price.
Ski bus stop is outside to take you to Neiderau or Auffach.

The wife let me down after a couple of years so I thought I would go for it on my own but the prices for one can be extorsionate.

Go to first choice select that you want one adult only and they will show you just the ones with one adult availability. Did not check for Feb so there could be discounts there already.

Actually, I did survive a crash, albeit it was in a glider, the wing was written off when we hit an immovable tree.

Remember thinking on the way down, ~ shouldn't my life be flashing before my eyes? Just reached for the camera and took photos before and during the hit.

My OH and I were scheduled to take our novice flights in a two seater. In New Zealand. Big, brave old me, says "I'll go first"

So up we go. I was in the front seat. After half an hour of stomach churning wheeling around, we head back. Unfortunately, we were too low to make the airfield and the pilot radiod in he was looking to land out.

He came on the earphones to say he knew of a field, just behind the next mountain, and told me the procedure for quick height loss, followed by quick landing, and by the way, could I keep my feet well clear of the controls.

The procedure involved turning the aircraft through 45 degrees, ie we were going forwards, but facing half sideways. The glider dropped like a stone for 250 ft, before the pilot straightened up, and changed to a steep angle, flattened out, we hit the ground and the wheel brakes failed. Hence the tree hit & smashed wing. It was a great piece of flying. No one was hurt beyond scratches.

The pilot, was the son of my old skiing buddy, was destined to be in the top 10 world glider pilots, and a qualified instructor.

Other things we did involved a helicopter flight to the top of a mountain, through mist and cloud, following a valley stream for guidance.

Then we were offered a choice of transport from North to South Island. We chose the sea plane option. This turned out to be a 50 year old Beaver De Havelind. Shortly before take off, I cottonedon that there was an oil leak in the engine; a third of the engine oil was leaking during each North/South/North direction. I looked the pilot in the eye, and asked if we got into trouble could we land in the open sea? He said we could, and off we went.

Then I was allowed to take charge of a 30 ft sailing boat on the open sea, a decision the owner quickly came to regret, as my sailing technique was closer to Trencher's boarding than Chichester's sailing. I refer to the angulation, not the smoothness.

So:
1) Our holiday insurance was largely a waste of money
2) I have had much, much worse results in ski accidents
3) Never trust a qualified instructor
4) Oh, I am no longer that keen on gliding :shock:

Flew back into Luton last night, it was raining and the wind was all over the place. The last 20 minutes of the flight as we came down was awful, up and down, left and right, pitching, rolling, bumping around. However, the actual touch down, once we managed to avoid being sick, was a work of genius and was as gentle as you could imagine. The pilot got a huge ovation from the passengers - the first time I have actually heard one that was both meant and deserved!
Wind and areoplanes together dont go.

Yes, I have flown into Leeds, in gale conditions, in one of those small buses with wings. It was horrible. When we landed, the pilot got his applause. It was then that I noticed the Air Stewardess, who was sat beside me, was tightly gripping my arm with both of her hands.

That is very welcome news, both for you being there, and the signal that you injury is, we hope, well behind you.

The Auhof is a good choice, and I am sure that Jan and family will do you proud. Will join up for sure, for a spot of skiing, show you the views from the top of the Marbachjoch, and share schnapps. Did I tell you Jan and I are both expert in schnapps? Having said that, I humbly bow to his superior absorption capability.

Have just realised that you arrive on a Monday. Why not the weekend, as well? Five days is much better than three.

An extra reason to look forward to the season, as if I needed one.

Yep, first time in Niederau Rose. sooooo excited!!! I think it's the one place on the planet I've read the most about!

Dave, wild horses couldn't keep me away from joining you for a schnapps / gluhwein / vodka / beer / wine! As a few people on here could vouch, I'm slightly partial to the odd bit of tipple :D

We've opted for 3 nights for 3 reasons: 1) so that I don't overdo it, 2) the boys are slightly put out they're not coming so we're minimising damage and, 3) it was a totally unexpected expenditure so we're keeping it as cheap as poss. Thanks to Jan, who has lived up to his word with the J2ski discount, we're not having to get a mortgage out to pay for the trip :thumbup:

Ok. At the ski show, I met Caron along with Admin, Skidaddle and a friend of hers for A DRINK. Caron was having a fantastic time with the Vodka, and unfortunatley myself and SD had to get back to Lincolnshire that night. I asked Caron what her plans were for the evening and, I quote, she said: "Well I'll probably stay here until I fall over and they run out of vodka"

I'm a tinsy bit scared now because in my memory I said "well we'll probably stay here until it closes and get the last train home". We'd only had two little thunder toffee vodka shots by that point!

I got a little excited this morning and waxed my skis. Then I realised I wasnt taking those ones and was going to buy some others! It bloody freezing in my house so have cracked out my ski jacket.

How many of you are going?

Definately get up to the Tux, it is well worth it, my first time in Mayrhofen I refused to as there was enough for me to do there, but having been since I full reccommend it. Also the apres ski bar at the entracne to the glacier lifts is fantastic.

You may regret asking that Tino; I am off with the uni so there are 130 of us. But we are part of a bigger trip with 6 other unis; so there are about 1000 students there for the week.

Well I will be getting s***faced everynight but will deffinatley be hitting the first lifts in the morning. Red Bull and Pro Plus are the answers to most of life's skiing problems! And as our uni is sponsored by Jagermiester, its a potent combo.

Look out for people wearing tight and bright 80's rave gear, or groups of animals from Noah's Ark.

As its the first week the resort is open, th universities get very cheap deals to ensure the resort is busy from the word go.

6 days lift pass, off-piste insurance, 4* hotel with spa, 5 evening meals, a day of slalom race entry and return coach trips for GBP349!

I feel that with my forum name (smirnoff_skier) and my last post about mixing drink and drugs, I am doing nothing to detract from the student stereotype and am infact creating somewhat of an already tarnished impression.

I would like to remind everyone that mixing drink, legal drugs and skiing is bad for everyone and is irresponsible!

I am infact sitting in my cold cold bedroom writing 10,000 words on what the car industry is doing to reduce its impact on the environment, whilst my housemate is listening to Bach's Suite in D Minor.

Later I shall be attending an opera concert with other cultured gentlemen and shall retire to bed with a copy of the FT and a glass of Bowmore Islay whiskey!

1st Feb - The 3 Valleys. Going with 9 mates. 8 year running we've had a mates ski trip. 4 hardcore have made the 'lads' trip - dispite 4 new born children all arriving during the 'season'.... Anyway - far too long to wait.

Then 28th March - La Plagne. Totally different trip. Going with just my 8 year old son. His 4th week. Not quite as good as his old man... but it's only a matter of time.... Far FAR too long to wait.

Reading some of the other threads - regarding injuries / accidents. Am I right in think that the 3V's has a little history. What pistes are more prone to accidents - where do we really need to keep our wits about us??

Brilliant. I intend to have a day there over Xmas, although Mrs H has this preconceived misconception that the place is windy, ridiculously cold, bleak, icy and thorougly miserable. I think it can be like that on a really bad weather day, but Mayerhofen has a good record for sunshine methinks.

Yes, there will be a large number of ladies (or a number of large ladies!)

Will find out the name of the hotel, not sure off the top of my head.
I love a good 20 or 30 hour coach trip, although the on the way back its usually a bit rubbish.

Sounds good, not sure whether to fly to Geneva or Lyon....Geneva airports a bit of a pain but Sleazyjet do a 06.00am and a 06.30am flight,so I can be in BsM by around 11.30am - 12.30pm ,where as the Lyon route means a 10.25am flight :thumbdown:.

Will be using Autoeurope for car hire ,6 days for GBP153 + fuel when I checked the other day.....mind you it can mean having to use a car the size of an orthapedic shoe...but normally get something th size of 307 or corsa or a citreon c2/3 so not too bad, if you decide to fly/drive you should give them a whirl.

Have a great time and a couple of gluweins for me. :D :D

Jon, I am based in Germany so definately no flying involved for me, only do resorts with train and bus links, which is all of them really. No probs with a couple of gluhweins, this should present no particular problem 8) Where are you heading from BsM? I have done both La Plagne and Val d'Isere from or passing through there. Flying to Geneva and getting the bus is not a bad option, especially early season.
