You could try

www.getcover.com

Not sure how good they are in terms of cover or price but I guess your first priority to get some form of cover fast!

Good luck and enjoy your couple of days skiing - I am extremely envious

Re:help needed...

Tino, I did say "not to get too excited"

Maybe you can buy insurance with your lift ticket? Most of the online insurers expect to set up a policy before you travel for it to be valid, could be dodgy proving otherwise in the event of a claim.
Also you will need to sort insurance for the country you live in, most of the ones suggested so far, are for UK residents, and unless I'm mistaken, Germany does not count )

Anyway, great news on the snow...you lucky sod 8) 8) :D

Re:help needed...

Unless you get better advice I'd say just book online for cover starting from tomorrow. Hopefully you won't need to make a claim, should you do you can still legitimately say the online booking was accepted and payed for so should be binding even if you are booking it from the resort.

My gut feeling is that it shouldn't matter whether you buy insurance a day before you need it or weeks before but WARNING of course gut feeling counts for ZILCH where the law is concerned. You must be absent minded or have skiied so much that you 'forget' to buy insurance. Anyway have fun.

Edit: Just read bandit's post. Bandit seems to know the actual facts so booking now might be too late.

Re:help needed...

Tino, you are in Austria. Assuming you are a European resident, and assuming that you haven't also forgotten your European Health Card, (which of course, all J2skiers carry in their wallet), then you will be given hospital treament.

The only grey areas are:

Costs of getting you off the piste to the Ambulance, and maybe the ambulance costs. Not sure of this position, but fair to say, not a high cost.

Helicopter cost, should you be caught out offpiste, or should you have a serious on-piste injury. Talk 3000 Euros.

Even with insurance, if you go off piste, in an area not recognised by he lift company, you may be liable for helischrauber costs. Depends on Ts and Cs, we had this discussion before.

I recentlz upgraded to Gold Mastercard and Visa which I have paid for everything with, that gives me bog standard travel insurance and a certain amount of third party liability. I also have seperate 3rd party liability on a special policy in German which covers the EU.

As you say, the helicopter costs are the only worry, but **** it, if I do some serious damage, 3k is the least of my worries!!!!!

Cheers for all the help guys, no problems on th first day!!

Story so far.....

8.30am

Over 70cm new snow down to resort
- 16oC at the summit (3250m)
Cloudy most of the day
29km piste open
Very busy

......and absolutely fantastic )

Was shattered by 3.30pm (first run at 8.30, lunch for 35 mins) so gave up and got pissed.

If anyone is ever in the TUX, stay at the Badhotel Kirchler. I decided not to slum it and paid 71 Euro a night.
It has never occured to me that I could find snow, in Europe in October. I must have been mad not to realise. Its so difficult for me to get time off during the winter months. Next October its our 10th wedding anniversary, thats us sorted we are going to The Tux, wish we had thought of it for this year, I am on holiday next week and we could have booked some-thing. The hotel Tino,s at looks lovely as well. I dont think I will be able to book local flights, we only seem to go to Innsbruck during winter months.

Yeah, the conditions on the Sunday were phenomenal. Can't wait to get out on the slopes again. Thinking of organising a team building exercise for my staff this winter, a long weekend skiing sounds appropriate....lol

BTW....I don't do smiling for photos

The hotel Tino,s at looks lovely as well. I dont think I will be able to book local flights, we only seem to go to Innsbruck during winter months.

book flights to Munich and then it's only a 2 hour drive from there

I can get flights to Innsbruck from Gatwick so I would think about an hour,s drive from Innsbruck. Probably would taxi it, dont really want to hire a car, we do enough driving at home it would be nice not to drive for a week.

I would hazard a guess at a taxi costing somewhere around 100 euros each way from Innsbruck Airport. Its about an hour and 15 to Mayrhofen from there, and Tux is another 15 to 20 mins further up the valley from there, not sure how many miles exactly. I would certainly suggest car hire as more favourable. You can also get a train to Jenbach, and a bus or train to Mayrhofen, and a post bus to Tux, that would probably be cheapest option.

To Rose R
The Hintertux is open all year around - although in the summer is really only good before the midday sun makes it slushy. I skied there in June - how fantastic! Innsbruck is the closest airport, approx 75 minutes away. Try the Austrian transfer company 'fourseason'(office@airport-transfer.com) or 'skytransfers.com' for good transfer links that don't include too much messing about. And for next year, happy anniversary and happy skiing!
