how come there is only 1 member of the J2Skiers group on Facebook? Perhaps we really do spend all our time on here and nowhere else?

I dont quite get this - do you mean that only 1 person from this forum is on Facebook (and if so, that means you know someones full name), or is there a J2ski facebook group with only 1 member?

quite a nice interface but zero ways of configuring it, we have an Anniviers group for people who don't jump into couloirs although FB just dumped our events for some reason so it's not without problems.

you're not being thick, i re-read the post and it could be misunderstood. I was poking around some FB groups and thought it would be a good idea if there was a J2Ski FB group, except i found that good ol' Admin had already set one up(I assume that's you Dave P?) the only thing is, obviously my real name isn't Freezy Water, at least not until the deed poll hearing next week, so until then how is Admin going to know who to accept :?: So basically Tony you did interpret it right.

Go on to your own facebook page, and search J2ski and it will lead you to the group, which you request to join. When Dave P pulls his finger out, we will all be members!!!!

The one thing it would give us is a back up if the forum croaked, either temporarily or forever. I'm sure Dave has no intention of letting that happen, but you never know.

When I go on my winter hols I board, ski,xcountry ski, toboggan and go on bob sleigh rides. I just love everything in the snow. So why cant I ice skate. Have tried so many times but still cant stand up

The difference is that now the skiers have what amounts to two snowboards strapped to their feet. They just haven't figured out that they only need one of them.

If your trying to skate using the hire ones they give you at the rinks I'm not suprised! I have ice-skated for years, but when i had to resort to those onetime instead of using my own they almost killed me.

For an off topic reply ... :D

As "rustyinn" Dave suggests you need to use skates you are used to.

Also be sure you have strong support in the ankles. Broken down skates will offer you nothing but problems and shin splints. Without a feeling of "a solid grip" of the ice due to dull or non supportive skates you will become tense and the shins will burn. No fun in that :!: Make sure the skates are sharp ... dull skates will guarantee a fall.

I used to use hockey skates which have lots of rocker (on the blade) but in recent years have moved to figure skates. Now and then I might try the hockey skates only to find that I can't stand up very well. The stance in the figure skates is completely different. They have a heel :shock: Even times when I miss a few weeks without skating it takes about 30 minutes to get the feel back.

If you have or plan to use figure skates please don't have the picks removed. You will get used to them. But also don't use them for pushing off. Push back and out from the ball of your foot (using the inside edges) in a relaxed manner. Left foot - right foot ....

The most likely reason you are having difficulty with skating is that you are not relaxing and may be keeping your knees stiff. Maintain soft - flexed knees.

I know it is said that if you skate, you can ski! I'm not sure if it goes the other way or not. But like everything, it is all in the practice we put in to develop a skill. In my case, I generally take time on Fridays for about 2 hours skating with the "lucky retired people".

Be careful and have fun :lol: The ice is harder than the snow. :mrgreen:

Thank you all for the good wishes. I have to say, that the good lady is very stoical, and bites her tongue when she sees the standard of my cleaning!

We had skiing friends in tonight, and I knocked up Wienerschnitzel and kummelkartoffel. Hey, how Austrian is that!

The second guide dog left us yesterday for advanced training, so the w/load is significantly reduced, no one hour walks for a while. The third pup is a Golden Retriever ball of fluff.

Yep the leg break is a bit of a bummer. It means I will have to carry my own skis :cry:

We had a bit of a mini J2ski get together last night: myself, Skidaddle and Ellistine along with our respective partners went out for a nice Italian meal.

Ellistine was stopping with us due to a sailing event locally to me, which I am sure he will tell everyone about shortly. I think he got a little swimming practise in..... )

caron-a, I don't actually ski, just browse the internet under various alias' volunteering people to do things they don't really want to do. Have you ever actually seen me post a picture of me skiing, where you can see my face? Didn't think so.
