Mayrhofen on a shoestring...

Have a personal goal for the 2008/09 season - might be far-fetched, but been in discussion amongst a circle of friends that it'd be feasible to have a week in Mayrhofen where the most expensive thing a person was to pay for would be the liftpass...

Me and a friend reckon flights to/from Innsbruck, transport (even taxi at a push between 4 people) up the valley, and a sizeable apartment shared between likeminded folk. Only problem is, Feb/March is the consensus as being the majority vote for best time (for us at least) thus being pretty peak season.

Any input appreciated on this.

...unless you all think I'm just crazy.

)

Re:Mayrhofen on a shoestring...

We stayed in Landhaus Roscher in March 08, breakfast only. Booked through Inghams but couldn't get any direct flights from Belfast. So, counting flights & accommodation for Bristol, ski hire and lift pass, it came to around GBP960 for the two of us. Mayrhofen is good - it was very busy when we were there but it was the week before Easter and there was a ski challenge comp on. Plenty of places to eat/drink and loads of piste to choose from - you can get away from the crowds. It snowed almost every day as well. Tony H on here is quite knowlegable on Mayrhofen - he gave me loads of useful info when we were going. :D

Re:Mayrhofen on a shoestring...

A few thoughts:

It isn't clear if Mayrhofen is the only place that you have been. It is good to try other places. We all get fixed on a "place to go". If you like Austria, there are other interesting places to go, particularly in your time scale.
If you have easy access to Innsbruck, there are heaps of good locations available.

Early March has the advantages of good snow, and minimal crowding.

I always start a group organisation by listing the criteria. This includes abilities, skiing needs(classes, ski hire, ski in/ski out, grades of slopes, etc), social needs, (night clubs, quiet locations, stubles with character and history, children's requirements)

I would never put the lift pass price forward as the hurdle. The main cost criteria is the bottom line. Yes, there is a tendency towards crazy.

But we are all skiers, and crazy is only a question of degree.

Very true. This [in theory] could be any budget ski holiday...

Chose Mayrhofen for 2 main reasons:

Fantastic value for money as far as the liftpass goes.
Unprecidented nightlife (see oh oh oh oh oh post from me... lol)

Had a quip that I used repeatedly after coming back from the place that I'd imagine a lot of people on here could relate to:

I drink in my local because its always full of likeminded people who go there to enjoy the atmosphere and the laugh. To me, Mayrhofen is the opitomy of this, for example - of a night-time, it may be full of drunken people, but they all have one common interest... You don't see police cars racing up and down the street for one.

[edit for Dave Mac:]
Have been to quite a few places in Europe, it's just that Mayrhofen sticks out as a must again for us.
All of us are proficient skiers/boarders - I'm personally rubbish on ski's - I know how to turn, stop and don't mind taking risks, but have reached a point in my life where I feel that if I don't try boarding this season then I never will and to be fair, it'd be poetic to board all the runs (then again, I've hardly touched the whole range available) I'm used to on ski's.
Maybe its that 'crazy' thing again...
;)_

Looking as if January is gonna be the cheapest time to go like, any fone number's/websites of cheap challet's would be well appreciated.

Would prefer Feb/March personally, especially this year *if you believe in the arctic thermal cycle theory  * but normally don't book till around December anyhow, so any challet business cards that skidaddle can pick up too would be great...

Don't know is this counts but I'm going to be on hoilday from 28.10.08 - 6.11.08 and I got two plane tickets for 663$ each from Cleveland to Munich, a rental car for $108 (special discounts, cuz I'm special 8) ) and a week's stay at the Landhaus Reiter for $408 (USD )
The whole thing for $1,944 USD NOT BAD if I do say so myself. Ask the folks on here, becuase THEY ROCK and go shopping around.

For special fun on my hoilday I'm going to go back to H-tux (again) and go top to bottom (weather permitting of course) Perhaps I can rent a St. Bernard doggy. Or a really hot male instructor. Then I want to spend at least one day embalmed by the finest schnapps Tirol has to offer

What kind of weather does Mayrhofen offer in the late fall? Ohohohh When is the parade with the cows for herbst harvest?

Look on www.mayrhofen.at at the winter section, and under accommodation, perform a specific search for rooms on those dates. If you either ask for replies or email individual places, you will find they are all available for whenever you want to book them, not on specific dates.
You should find some in the town, although you will also find a lot in Hippach, Ramsau and Schwendau, which are slightly cheaper as they are out of the town centre, but all connected by the excellent ski bus, and a taxi for 8 people is around 7-9 euros from there to get back home. Its also much quicker up on the Horberg Gondola from just outside Hippach compared to the Penkenbahn in town )

Re:Mayrhofen on a shoestring...

It includes return coach to Sheffield (my uni), 4* accomodation, 6 day lift pass, nightclub entry and race entry to Kings slalom and GS races.
there are some details on www.winterbreakuk.com. I have my own equipment and insurance which is why it is a little cheaper for me.
Not sure how many uni's are going but it is usually quite a few.

It will have to be good to beat BUSC at Hinterglem/Saalbach this year. 2 weeks, 2500 students and a lot of powder.

Tom

Re:Mayrhofen on a shoestring...

Just realised I never posted after I did the 'shoestring' thing... The idea kinda worked, the lift-pass was the most expensive thing to buy, although the dire strength of the Euro at the time meant we needed about double the spending cash than the previous time (went to the Spar down from the Penken on the first day and a jar of Nescafe worked out at GBP9!) We only ate in 1 night out of 7, hence not saving as much as we could of, but as per my luck in M, we caught the weather.

Thanks again to all the info provided by people on here, without you, it wouldn't have been possible. I definitely owe some Zillertal Pils out now. :-)

Here's some pics...

The view from our Balcony.

Board Park.

Halfway down the Ahorn Red.

Halfway UP the Ahorn Red.

Obv the White Lounge - weather was GLORIOUS that day.

Mmmmmm - Zillertal Pils.
