Helmets

I was wondering who wears helmets when skiing?

Do you wear them all of the time?

Just when going off piste/back country?

Never?

Dependant on the conditions?

Or something else?

Re:Helmets

I never did wear a helmet, untill this season when i found a respectable looking one, with speakers in the earpads! Besides everyone else wears them now...

Re:Helmets

I was just thinking the very same thing! Presumably you just read Pavels link too.

I have bought a helmet for this season. Haven't used it in anger yet - lots of time spent wandering around the house in it though!

Last year my skiing speed was starting to get quite high, plus a lot of the pistes were very icey. Not a good combination.

I wouldn't think of riding my bike without a helmet so it seemed daft not to wear one when skiing.

I think the girlfriend will be getting one for this season too although it does mean giving up her beloved hat.

Re:Helmets

Been wearing one for 3 winters now. On and off piste. I'm hoping to start ski-touring this winter, I'll have to see how hot I get in a helmet.
Not had cold feet since starting to wear a helmet :D

Re:Helmets

Then again I feel the effect of a helmet on me hitting a tree skiing at 50mph|++ will be negligable so I think it may be a piece of mind thing. There is also the risk it may make you "fearless" as such and ski beyond your ability, but hey what have i got to lose. Is it just me or is everyone else on this at work:D

But then you might survive the impact with the tree, bounce off and bang your head on an Alpine Marmot and die. If you had a helmet on then you would probably be alive - not so sure about the marmot though.

Anyway, everybody knows that the main reason for wearing a helmet is so that you can wear your goggles on your forehead without them misting up!

He he, this is work... ...though we don't often have time to chat...

Helmet?

Yep, but not all the time. As light as a hat and probably warmer so goes on by default now - but I'll leave it if the snow is deep, the sun is out, the runs are quiet and we're not heading anywhere adventurous.

Re:Helmets

When I began skiing I was on the ground more than on the skis and thought the snowboarders should have something harder than my head from which to glance off - so, I went to a helmet and have been glad of that move. There are dents in it now from not only the occasional head first landings but also from some over anxious lifties. The helmet is warmer than a toque and gives a better anchoring location for the goggles. I'm wearing the Grio 9 and even though I may look like a jockey without a horse I'm quite happy with it. More and more people are wearing helmets now and I expect in a very few years most hills may require their use.

Mike :)

Re:Helmets

The fit is the most important aspect for me, followed by the air vents.
I tried on lots of helmets, sizes do seem to vary, as does the shape inside, so adjustable fit pads are useful.
As you are after, (I think) "Tune Ups", the Giro's would be a good place to start :D

Oh and a decent colour choice, no point looking like a complete
