Hi all

im very new to skiing, always wanted to go but parents could never afford it etc, now im old enough to pay for myself... last winter / early this year i went to schladming in austria and meribel in france, had a great time.

My girlfriend and i want to go again early next year but want some suggestions about where to go, we are going with some mates and want a place with a bit of night life too...

we are amateur skiers (greens easy, blues were ok, tovets on courchevel 1550 was a bit hairy whereas the trout lol in meribel was great) and it will be the first time for our mates.

we are looking for somewhere which will help us progress to the next level.

Lastly, we dont want to spend a fortune!! doesnt have to be real budget but dont want to spend the earth

we were thinking austria or france again, we have seen a good deal in Soll (austria)

anyone been there or want to suggest somewhere else?

Thanks

sorry i know you all probably hate newbie skiers but we got to start somewhere!!!

Re:where to go? help please!

Of course I am going to be biased, but I think Borovets has everything you need.

Everything is cheap (GBP0.80 a pint / GBP5 for a 3-course meal), lessons & instructions are cheap as are things like ski-doo hire (highly recommended) and ski equipment hire.

I have been skiing for years and still find borovets enough of a challenge (I'm at instructor level). If you venture slightly off-piste the rewards are tremendous.

Nightlife is good too, plenty of bars & restaurants with a few clubs.

Check out the site in my signature for more info, or feel free to PM me.

DoA

where to go? help please!

Hi

I am biased too, but I did pick Morzine as a base for good reasons....

The Portes du Soleil area has runs to suit any level of skier/boarder from complete novice through to off-piste adventurers. Morzine town has plenty of nightlife with two nightclubs and a good selectin of bars as well as restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets.

This winter I am offering accommodation aimed at groups and single people on a self catered basis with a live in host to ensure you get the most out of your holiday.
Prices start at GBP160 per person per week but you can also book by the night and arrive and leave any day you like.
Drop me a line if you would like more info.

Jo

Me too! Thumbs up for Morzine!

I'd never been on a skiing holiday before and had only skied on dry about 10 years ago!

I loved it - beautiful town, nice selection of bars/rest and not too boozy/clubby but still good places to go till the wee sma' hoors.

50 mins from Geneva (where the cheap airlines fly to)

Pistes around the pleney (main chairlift) are dead easy...greens to easy blues but get progressively harder, especially on the way over to Les Gets!

Great ski school and loads of decently priced hire shops.

It's got everything...i really liked it!

Re:where to go? help please!

How about Banff? Its a long shot but flights are getting cheaper and if you time it right you can go for around GBP400 for flights and hotels. im going back for the 5th time this winter all beit for 3 months but you get the general idea. If you want some info giv me a mail-im not a tour operator just a bored shift worker lol!! There are easy runs in abundance in Banff and a little more to test you as you progress. I can also put you in touch with some very good ski instructors!!

Re:where to go? help please!

If it's Soll you're going to then you won't be dissapointed. I was there in Jan 2006 having been skiing just once before in Andorra. It should be ideal for you and it's a natural progression for someone who has been before. The resort has any amount of friendly and interesting blues, manyof which are through the trees and for those that haven't been before the ski schools are excellent. The village itself although not as lively as some of the reports would have you believe still has the best nightlife I've experienced on the slopes. There are plenty of cosy, inviting pubs and lots of good quality restaurants if you like plenty of meat, cheese and big portions. Check out the Hotel Postwirt for some of the best steaks you're likely to have. The only drawbcak I can remember is there is a bit of a walk, approx 500m to get to the main Gondola but just take the ski-bus first thing and you're laughin.
