Sinful ski outfits Contest

If you are a "regular" to this site you, I am sure have read to many sinful ski outfits we see on the slopes!

In order to encourage skiers to be "green" and blend into the skiing context I am offering a "prize" to the skier that presents the most sinful outrageous ski outfit he or she wears!

We are not talking here of costumes, or film "props". No we want the "real" thing. The prize will be a pair of Avalanche ski pants size 36-38! The judges will be Mike and Ellistine.
Not that they as ski fashion "experts" but they know what sins are, they know what ski garments to wear and Ellistine just got a Spyder jacket thus indicating he has taste AND need for speed!.

In order to breal any possible ties I will also judge.

Here are the basic rules.

Sent picture of your wife, friend or yourself on this site.

You must have worn this while skiing.

The deadline for this contest is end of September 2007.

I promise to send to the winner a pair of Avalanche ski pants or act a "fashion consultant" on their next ski clothing purchase!

Sinful ski outfits Contest
Well fellow skiers, Pavel is at it once more !!! If there is anything ski related on this planet better than a "Pavel Springtime Quiz", it is the Pavel Mid-Summer Ski Fashion Contest"!!!

Ellistine, it will be great to co-judge this contest with you and Pavel. My mind wonders and my heart skips a beat at thoughts of what may be submitted. We are going for the worst fahion statement here I think. But all in good fun - of coure. :!:

Mike

Luckily, as I've only been skiing for four years, even my oldest gear ain't that old but I can still recognise a splendidly awful 'one piece' when I see one.

Re:Sinful ski outfits Contest Criteria

I see a problem ahead. People will want to know what criteria we used to allow someone to win.

Can we "propose" at least 3-4 criteria for that sinful outfit!

It can be;

1. Color ( or colors )

2. Design ( or lack of...)

3. Fit

4. Date ( a 1874 tweed jacket a la C. Doyle just does not "fit" in the ski scene today)

5. Functionality ( does it help or hinder the skiing movement)

Is this acceptable to both of you?

Re:Sinful ski outfits Contest Criteria

Whatever you say Pavel is good on my front!

But I think anything that is just plain "tacky" should qualify as being in the running for a strong "winning" possibility. Some of the older Warren Miller movies had outfits which would qualify these days as being retro retro. But then we must be careful not to offend since beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Something that ellistine, you or myelf may think as sinfully outrageous may be something the wearer feels is his/ her garb in which they preform the best. But then if they thought this they will not enter it in this contest anyway. I do recall seeing a young gentleman pictured in a tweed jacket and I believe black leggings. I believe his leather ski boots had long thongs that wound around his calfs. He struck a striking pose on the freshly fallen sunlit snow. Possibly his attire would qualify in this modern day contest? Perhaps this picture should be entered by Mr. Annon!

Mike
:D

Grennskier's Sins

Greenskier,

Thanks for first post on skier sins. It takes a lot of courage to be the first to throw in the picture. It really is not that serious of a sin but it will help other sinners come out ( if they have your "example" as proof that we all sin)!

I bet you do a lot of "off-piste" skiing!

Are those "adjustable" poles?

Is jacket a hooded winter camping / trekking jacket?

Are your boots rear entry?

Are ski pants with 'into boots" sleeve or the bell bottom types that go over boots with zipper at rear?

Do you wear a long scarf that rolls around your neck?

All of these will give you extra points on the contest.

Again thanks for first step!

More Entries

I was about to deny that my ski jacket was a camping jacket but after checking the label, I've noticed it's called 'Discovery' (BTW, I have now replaced it with a new pink jacket which is definitely designed for skiing - I keep the old one to lend to friends that I coerce to go skiing with me.)

My poles aren't adjustable but they do have a very old sticker still stuck on them from a ski race I participated in about 15 years ago.

My pants are in the boot. The pink gators are an add-on.

My current boots aren't rear entry but my first pair were. When asked by the ski shop attendant (I won't call him a bootfitter) what type of boots I was looking for, I told him 'white ones.'

As further inspiration to everyone, I've been looking through my photo albums and have found a few more likely entries.

A very enticing ensemble for my very first time skiing (how sexy is that shirt?)

Part of a very sinful group.

Bad jacket, bad perm and bad knee (courtesy of bad binding)

You truly are a "brave" one. I could not dare post some of my "outfits" from my university days.

Let me give you a picture;

Army surplus green jacket= $5
Wool knickers = $8
White woolen socks to knees=$2
Raccoon hat ( from old coat)= $1

Bamboo ski poles = $1
Leather boots = $25

What is amazing was that I did not stick "out"!

PS
My children burned all of these , so I would NOT wear them on retro days at my ski center!

Fellow judges ,,,we just might have a winner!!!!!!!

Congrtulations greenskier !!

Your picture on the windy slopes has me jealous - but happy for you being able to ski when we are cutting the grass.

By any chance is this a slope at Falls Creek? And if not; do you ski at Falls Creek? They used to send me their e-mail newsletter which was always interesting to see.

You sometimes meet the nicest people on the chair lift. On one such occassion I met a youug lady with an Autrailian accent. She was studying at a Halifax Univertiy. When I asked her about Falls Creek he was amazed that anyone here would have heard of the place. She said it was a really nice hill.

Mike

Sinful ski outfits Contest

Photo was taken at Perisher Valley which is the closest ski area to Sydney (a mere 6 hours drive!) and also the biggest ski area in Australia. I have skied at Falls Creek, however, and agree it is a really nice hill - very popular with people who live in Melbourne.

Just in case your not jealous enough, I'm off skiing again this coming weekend - although that will probably be it for the season as good snow is usually hard to come by beyond August in Australia.

The prize is coming

Greenskier,

Like freezywater says, I too am very jealous but not to the point that I don't wish you another great trip. I hope for sunny cool windless days for you and conditions better than you have ever seen before. This and the company of your dearest friends gathered around a roaring fireplace after the day's skiing - just to enhance that "warm and fuzzy" feeling!

I hope you will relate stories of your trip upon returning to the real world, so as to remind us just how great skiing can be. I want you to make the jealousy just about ooze. Perhaps Pavel, you will sponsor a contest where the entrants offer their ski stories with clarity of detail which will put us right there on the hills with them. I know your stories have done that for me !! I'll be watching for leaks all next winter!!

Enjoy your trip Greenskier,

Mike

Re:Sinful ski stories

Mike,

You have a great idea. I will discuss this with the site "guru" Dave and perhaps get some sponsors to "donate" some skis or boots as prize!!

Now we will have to have "rules" . Foe example can Green skier win TWO prizes?

Are there "others" that want to share their skiing stories?

This is what I suggest.
We have a well defined section for ski stories.
We can have a "voting" system so that readers can vote for "best "story.
Every month or two months we can have some form of prize!

Any more rules?

Re:Sinful ski stories

Pavel;

I'm glad you like the idea. We skiers are supposed to have a "soft" side so we can feel the snow. And to me that means we are creative and observant. If this is true we should be able to tell of our experiences (real or imaginery) on the skis. There is a "closed" auduience here in that we are all intereted in skiing and will all be able to relate to others' stories with enthusiasm. We all like to tell our stories and who better to tell them to than an interested selection of people with like interests.

Rules ? I suppose there must be guidelines if a winner is to be declared. If her voting peers feel Greenskier's story is the best, she should certianly be able to win the prize. Whether the stories are true experience or not, I think the voters will have to decide if they are plausible or not. Plausible storie should be a requirement. Possibly different categories might be established. The stories that come from dreams, those that are factual, and maybe the ones who's truth is stretched slightly. The whole intent is to put the reader "on the hill" or "at the tuning bench" with the skier telling the story. They should be entertaining and not use up all of Dave's band width!

If pictures to enhance the story are available, they may be permitted however this takes away from activating the readers' imagination of the circumstances being described. I, for example, have a very clear picture of searching for leaks from your story and you didn't include any pictures. Maybe pictures should not be permitted so as to "force" the literary value of the stories.

Mike

Of course she can! (Although I may be a little biased) If you let me enter I promise to share my story about how I started the day with two skis and two stocks and finished with no skis and one stock - and no it doesn't involve powder.

I can't wait to get my tuque and show it off to my friends - do you think it would be stretching the truth to say I won it in a ski competition?
