New Zealand ski operator NZSki has unveiled plans for a major expansion at The Remarkables ski area near Queenstown that would make it the largest lift-served ski area in the country.

The proposal, which has been lodged through New Zealand's 'fast-track' approval process, would see The Remarkables expand into the neighbouring Doolans Basin, adding 262 hectares of new skiable terrain.

If approved, the resort's total skiable area would increase to 711 hectares (from 449 hectares) overtaking other New Zealand ski areas in size.

A key feature of the project would be a new 2.7km gondola linking the existing Rastus Burn base area with Doolans Basin.

The lift would become the longest gondola in New Zealand and create a multi-valley ski area for the first time at The Remarkables.

According to plans released by NZSki, the expansion would include terrain for all ability levels, with a dedicated learner area alongside additional intermediate and advanced runs.

Daily capacity across the ski area would increase from around 3,500 to 6,000 skiers and snowboarders.

Higher and south-facing

Doolans Basin is higher than existing terrain, with a more southerly aspect, both factors that should help support more reliable snow conditions.

The expansion has been under consideration for several years, with Doolans Basin long identified as a potential growth area for the Queenstown ski field.

Planning documents indicate the existing ski area is approaching capacity during peak periods and school holidays, with demand continuing to grow from both domestic and international visitors.

If consent is granted, construction would take place over multiple summer seasons beginning from late 2026, allowing winter operations to continue as normal.

The Remarkables is scheduled to open for the 2026 season on 13 June.
