Piste colour codes in Austria and Switzerland.

So I was looking through some skiing articles on the web and they said that In Austra and Switzerland there are BLue (begginer) Red (Intermediate) Black (difficult / advanced) and ORANGE?? (Expert / Extreme).

Now I have skied many European resorts mostly in Austria but have never come accross an Orange Piste (although I would very much like to).

Does anyone know of these illusive Orange pistes where they are etc?

I think you can find them in Zermatt especially in the Gornergrat Area.
Have a look at the 3D trails I made with google earth,

The orange/yellow are downhill runs on unprepared pistes.
At least in Zermatt that is.

I'm going in januari 26 2008... damn the waiting it hurts.

Where are you going to stay in Zermatt we are looking to get away for 2 weeks Dec 07 Jan 08 (we always go over the New Year) but we are struggling to find a decent place to accomodate our group at a reasonable price.

I have never been to Zermatt before but would like to could you give us some hints on accomodation?

how have you found it when you are there cost wise?

I'm going to stay for the first time in hotel www.antika.ch but i've read a few good posts about them somewhere else.
The main selling points for were.

1. In the very heart of Zermatt when you look on the map overlay on google earth or here [http://www.zermatt.ch/graphics/map/Ortsplan-zermatt.jpg] they are located on number 53 near the busstop.
2. Wellness there is nothing better to relax in a sauna and hot steambath after a day of skiing.
3. cheap.

Hi There Prometeus.

I had a look and it looks great just what we are looking for however they are fully booked for one of the weeks that we want which is a night mare so we have asked them isf they can reccomend anywhere similar.

Hi Prometeus,

no not yet, we are still looking, our problem is that we have many children in our group and everything that we are finding is expensive and very expensive for kids,

We are still looking, though a little farther afield we are looking at gressoney and Alagna as well because I'm told that you can ski zermatt from there too.

Do you have any reccomendations?

Max,

Try Breuil-Cervinia or Valtourneche in Italy.
From there you definitely you can ski Zermatt. if the lifts are open of course.

maybe Tasch? I know it's car park but it's got some good points and, I'd expect it's more economic.
