Re:Anyone been to Obertauern

Hi Dobby , thanks for responding , three people going , one intermediate safe skier, one fast skier and a fearless 13 year old.

However , since I posted, the hotel did not look like it was that good so now looking at Soll , never skied Austria before so that's why we fancy it.

Normally we book catered chalet or hotel , not up to the ridiculous hours because we love to get first tracks.

So any advice on Austrian skiing would be great fully welcome.

Re:Anyone been to Obertauern

What time of year are you travelling? Obertauern is more snow sure than SkiWelt(Soll).SkiWelt is a much more extensive interconnected ski area and in my opinion the towns and villages and mountain huts of the SkiWelt are more varied and interesting. For non skiers there is little to do in Obertauern. So I think an important factor in your decision will be the timing of your trip. Think you will enjoy either area!
Re:Anyone been to Obertauern

Hi Ncouse, planning on Leaving on 30th Dec, I can see that Soll is quite low and there will be risk, I have never stayed at a resort that low before, especially early season.

Re:Anyone been to Obertauern

I have been to Obertuern twice and both times at the end of December ..It has the reputation of being very snow sure and the last time I went there was snow there and not much elsewhere..Its a good resort with some nice intermediate runs and you can ski all round the village in either direction ..well worth it for a weeks skiing ..the last time I went we skied out of the hotel door onto the circuit and could ski back in the other direction ..I stopped in the Hotel Petersbuhel which was great and has single rooms ..also its only an hour and a bit from Salzburg airport ...they used to have a dedicated shuttle service for the resort

Re:Anyone been to Obertauern

Yes, that is the risk with SkiWelt and other resorts of that altitude. Last few years, the natural snow has been poor in the Skiwelt at end of December and it wasn't till about 5/6th January that the first decent snow falls arrived. To counteract that, SkiWelt does have extensive snow making facilities and the pistes are very well maintained.
Obertauern itself lies slightly below the highest point of the SkiWelt(1850m) or Kitzbuhel(2000)so you can appreciate that snow cover is not usually an issue at beginning of January in Obertauern. Let us know where you decide to go and your opinion. Enjoy!!

Re:Anyone been to Obertauern

I have spent the last two New Years in Obertauern and I will be there with my wife and Daughter again this year. I really like the resort. The skiing is good. The mountain restaurants are really good. Apres ski is fun. Most Hotels there are really good quality.

Re:Anyone been to Obertauern

While the village in Soll is very low - something like 700masl, the skiing is mainly between about 1200m and 1600m. The Skiwelt has some of the best piste management anywhere and I would be surprised if you did not have decent enough pistes to ski on.

Even if natural snow is scarce, the worst that will happen is that the runs to resort might be a bit ropey but this can simply be averted by taking the gondola down .

For some reason, people hate doing this but for me a better option is to ski a bit longer up high in enjoyable conditions and then take the gondola down. The alternative is ski down the resort runs when they can be in poor condition, often alternating between ice and deep slush, and over-crowded in the late afternoon as lots of people struggle to get home safely :x

Re:Anyone been to Obertauern

I thoroughly enjoyed my trip to SkiWelt last year. As Wanderer says, the piste management and snow making in SkiWelt is superb. Given that the area opens early December I'd be surprised if there wasn't enough skiing in late December, even if the runs back to resort are white strips on green fields.

My daughter has asked if there be snow at village level in Soll , Can I safely assume there will not be any at that time of year because of the resort height ?

Tonypants, no. There may be snow at resort level, there may not. I think that there was in SkiWelt last year in early December, but not later in December.

Most likely there will be some snow though the quality may not be great. There is a small slope at village level where complete beginners take their first ginger steps onto the snow. Most of the skiing is higher up.

Re:Anyone been to Obertauern

I've been going there for the odd day's skiing for years. It's a soulless place with none of the charm of most Austrian resorts - it's more like France, but the snow is pretty reliable. It's also not exactly huge: a competent intermediate can easily do it all in a day. Not much very challenging stuff, and mostly easily reds and blues. I wouldn't contemplate it for a whole week: you'll be bored after day 2. Have a look at Schladming instead which is much more extensive and with more varied terrain.

Re:Anyone been to Obertauern

Well I ended completely off track , only because of a deal Mrs P found with Mark Warner.
Now booked to go to Courmayeur on New Year's Eve , never been there before ( never skied In Italy before).
Any good ? I know it's not a huge ski field but opportunities to Cham or La Thuile etc.
