The Equipment Thread 2016 / 2017: What have you just bought or thinking of buying?

I have not found a recent thread on this one so starting one for this season. The great thing about skiing (apart from the skiing, obviously!) is that you have already a spent a fortune on accommodation and travel so you don't feel guilty about buying nice kit to go with it. As it is the start of the season, this is about the time most of that kit is purchased.

So, after losing my last "action cam" in a deep, muddy puddle somewhere in Indonesia earlier this year, I am now going for this to capture all my skiing adventures: https://driftinnovation.com/products/drift-stealth2

What do you think?
Am going to try and hold out this year. Want new piste skis and boots but will difficult to justify this year as doesn't look like I will be getting much skiing done. Head Supershape I.Speed 170cm, 68mm underfoot are definitely the next purchase. Look the bomb to me.

That drift stealth thing looks quite good, might be a bit less sticky-outy than the old go pro. So fed up with the head-mounted gopro getting banged out of position when the chair opens or closes! Then having to fuss around getting it horizontal again. I suppose i could get the chest mount but it looks kind of uncomfy. Really i want a helmet with integrated camera, visor, head up display that shows time and piste map, and also has a phone and a huge battery life and maybe a chin guard for good measure. Sadly nobody seems to make these yet! So I just bought some extremely garish t-shirts instead on the theory that it will feel like i'm going faster when wearing them!

Re:The Equipment Thread 2016 / 2017: What have you just bought or thinking of buying?

I have far too much kit, too many pairs of skis, 11 or 12 pairs, THREE pairs of ski boots, (all single clip rear entry), two pairs of Sallos. Ridiculous.

The one item would be a pair of gloves, if I can get some Raichle at a reasonable cost. It is the one item of kit that I am heavy on.

It will definitely be less sticky-outy than the go pro and I think the ideal spot for capturing what you are experiencing is filming from eye level. It certainly wont bang on the chair when it is attached to your goggles. No only this but it is safer and easier to manage operation and mounting of the camera when it sitting on your goggles instead of your helmet. Of course it isn't fully water proof and I'm not sure if the image quality is as good as the go pro, but for the price and having it eye level mounted, it is worth it.

While you cant get a helmet as you described (perhaps once it comes out in a bond movie first!) you can get goggles with integrated cameras but I doubt there is any HUD....

There is a display screen for the camera, but not integrated GPS, speed, etc yet, that's a different set of goggles. Great picture HD and most people don't even know you've got a camera.

There is an optional remote which I would consider if this were to be an issue.

New jacket for me, finally crumbling to the pressure of going for a brighter colour. Salomon as usual, as I have long arms and the fit is good for me. At least now I am in tangerine/clementine (surely this is just 'orange') I can be seen easily at the bar.

I have the original Zeal ION HD camera goggles. Very sturdy, there are 4 big buttons on the side, so not a problem. My only advice is to go for an all round lens if poss', had the mirror originally, but struggled in low light. The latest goggles are slightly smaller apparently.

Re:The Equipment Thread 2016 / 2017: What have you just bought or thinking of buying?

Have to agree, Brucie. Five years ago, my sons bought me a helmet camera for Christmas. It is still in it's box.

Today, I did succumb. Bought a pair of gloves from Aldi. Just GBP4.99, do not have the leather palms that I normally specify, but as a second pair, they will do fine.

Back to camera, my four Youtube vids were all taken with a hand held video camera.

Down the speed gun, 102kph:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5SbCO9cIS4

The run down the mountain:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGAAR5dS_Vg

For me, the most important thing is the skiing, not the gear.

Replace the Mangums:-(; that would be the plan. Have to say they have been a close to perfect ski for me and Chamonix. Fun on-piste, good in shallow/medium powder, versatile enough to plough through the tracked out stuff. Really have been my go to ski almost regardless of conditions. If I'm not touring I'm on them, which seems to be a departure from the trend of using fat skis for everything. Few mm thinner next time as want to try and get a bit more dynamic.

Few clips from some lessons last year, piste, moguls and bit of tracked out (we put the tracks in). If you can only have one ski then they would be a nice option.

https://youtu.be/7-v2Yd8O0O0

https://youtu.be/Ef88X1vZXQ8

https://youtu.be/ofxX8zwdZuk

I seriously doubt it's a "fad", since people have liked to video their adventures and presumed achievements for quite some years, it hasn't gone away and very unlikely to do so in the future. Even Dave films his skiing, although stubbornly with a handheld cam, but this is his choice, some people like to keep their hands free. And it's definitely not a "fashion". They are even less of a fashion item than a ski jacket. Just because you personally don't like cameras doesn't make them a less legitimate topic :)

Okay. Perhaps two threads would be more appropriate. 'Core' Equipment, and Accessories?

Re:The Equipment Thread 2016 / 2017: What have you just bought or thinking of buying?

I am now looking for a back protector that won't break the bank! I have found one from Black Crevice which I think should be a good balance between protection, quality and price at 39 Euros. Does anybody use one of these and is this an item where I should be going for a top of the range product?

We are all still aligning on the need / benefits of a helmet . As for back protection I don't know of any recreational skiers who wear them. Lower limb or clavicle injuries being far more common. A lot of boarding friends wear protection for their coxis, concensus being that something that is correct for your body length is greatest consideration, ventilation/ breathability being a close second. I guess if you can get something that ticks those and you are skiing big then is probably worth a shot.

Whatever you mean by skiing big, I very much doubt I am doing that. I do know though I have had some spectacular falls already that left me wondering if I was doing enough to protect whatever I could without being ridiculous. I figured back protection was as common as wearing helmets (clearly not the case). It would definitely have to be something that I hardly noticed while wearing it. The clothing, helmet and boots are already heavy enough so I would hate to add something I didn't need to.

Just got a pieps jetforce tour rider 24 ML, mammut pulse barryvox, black diamond evac 9 shovel and ortavox carbon probe. Hope I never have to use any of it in anger but we can't be too safe on the mountain. As for protection, as a boarder I used to be like robocop. Covered in armour etc. Now I've whittled it down to a helmet and knee pads. The later being for comfort whilst kneeling on the snow waiting for all my slowcoach skier friends.

I saw some in a local shop recently that looked like mittens but had fingers built in.
Felt cosy when I tried them, but when I took them off the fingers came too and all turned inside out. That would dement me!
Happy shopping!

Fischer Cruzar Fire Allround Carving ski with Rs9 bindings. I got them online for 180 Euros, new. These seem to fit my skill level which is now beginner - intermediate and are apparently relatively forgiving and easy to turn with. I'm going into a sports shop in Munich next week to buy boots as I won't dare by those online.

Don't buy boots online, but even in the shop when they measure your feet and bring you some boots to try in that size, ask to try those boots in a size smaller too. Shops tend to put beginners/intermediates in boots that are too big for them, to avoid looking for new boots soon see if you can size down. Most of the time you can and sometimes even by more than one size.

Hi Verbier,

Thanks for the advice. The sports store I intend to go to have promised that as with all ski boots purchased from their store, I am allowed to continue returning for boot adjustments free of charge until they fit perfectly. They suggested that I can either take the boots as they are and ski with them for a couple of days and then take them back for adjustments or try an adujstment first and then try them and come back if I need to. I know that the liner will compress too, so I will go for as snug as possible while being comfortable and then see how I go from there.
