WTF is Davina McCall talking about?

This burned me up when I read it earlier today so much that I'm now trying to set up a campaign to get her to take back her idiotic statement.

The statement in question is this:

"If you think of anybody going away on a ski holiday for a week your chances of getting injured on that holiday are extremely high."

Naw guys, you have all got this wrong. DM, (whew, same initials, is she ever lucky) is spot on.

The evidence is plain for everyone to see. Just look at the first happy smily photo, and you will see her skis, the red ones, against the wall behind her.

Cable bindings, a wee bit dodgy if you ask me.

Well, OK, since you ask me, one hour into my first attempt at skiing, (Cairngorm, 50 years ago), I was in an ambulance on the way to Raigmore hospital, Inverness. Cable bindings. Ankle to thigh plaster, with crutches.

But you see, Davina McC, (is she even trying to copy the name???), we have moved on. Ski safety now lies somewhere between Over 80s Nudist Leapfrogging, and tiddlywinks.....

Perhaps she was confusion skiing holiday with "non-skiers going ski jumping"

The actuaries would suggest otherwise - winter sports doesn't attract a huge premium over regular travel insurance.

Celebrities making ill informed comments on matters they are not qualified to is a pain as it tends to reinforce prejudice and drive up the workload of those who have to bat off the inappropriate demands on service like health care that they generate.

Amazing! If you've never skied before and you don't take lessons but think the top of the mountain is a good idea on day one, cause the sun is shinning, then you get what you ask for. I've skied for over 45 years and the worst I've done to my self is cut my thumb on my edges. I've always taken ski school and now an off piste guide. Even for advanced skiers it's worth refresher lessons, one to stop bad habits creeping in and also to learn the new techniques which go with the new technology. Plus you have the fun of meeting new people.

However on the positive side to DC's comments if loads of people listen to her and decide to go for winter sun holiday instead, then the slopes will be that much less crowded for those of us who know better.

It doesn't even make sense what she said. If I think of anybody going away on a holiday blah-blah my chances of getting injured on that holiday is high... How on Earth is this even supposed to work?

The truth is that one can get injured on a ski holiday, it sucks but it happens and this risk can only be completely eliminated by not skiing... Still no need to overdramatize it, many people manage to ski for years without ever getting injured, some might wipe out on the first day, have an unfortunate fall and break the wrist etc. Not very different from most other sporting activities and statistically risk is not even that high. My friend broke her ankle last January by watching TV on her couch. Her foot went a little numb and when she got up it just folded under her. She was back on skis by March :)

Reminds me of a friend who has skied since he was 3 years old (half Swedish), anyway his wife was pregnant and did not want him to go skiing with us in case he did himself some damage. To cut a long story short, she insisted he took her on a last minute shopping trip to Barcelona instead, before the baby was born, where he promptly tripped on a kerb and shattered his ankle. He was in plaster for 8 months and was very little help with the new baby :(

Sadly he has not been skiing since, as he still has trouble with his ankle.
