La Folie Douce.........is it just me.....?

Hi all

Just back from another fabulous week in the 3V, great company, snow, apres etc.....

My only bug bear was our visit to La Folie Douce (my second visit after VDI). I try but just cannot enjoy it! I find it over pretentious and more akin to a club 18-30's bad party. Heading down into Meribel and going to Ronnies or Jacks which have great beer, live music and are far more personal and friendly, I was wondering if it's me getting old or do I have a point?

If it is just me then I can live with that!

Cheers!

S999

Totally agree. It's a circus freak show to me and I like a good time. It's like expensive Benidorm on the snow.

To stop off for an early afternoon drink, it is OK but once the music starts and the monsters come out, I leave. However I do confess to owning one of their T-shirts but these are of good quality, unlike the majority of their clientele :-o
I'm 50 in July. I love La Folie Douce. I'm up on the tables with the young ones. I don't think it's an age think. It's just a personal preference. .........

Spot on Stevie.Used to have class now a place to avoid unless you want to join in the table and mooning events. Not been helped by a couple of TV documentaries featuring the chinless wonders egged on by financial
city tes and the worst types of estate agents.

Re:La Folie Douce.........is it just me.....?

I am sorry but my idea of apres-ski is cheesy Bavarian drinking songs that somehow seem to get everybody dancing:mrgreen: . Not a loud disco on the snow that alienates everybody over the age of 25/mental age of 10:shock:.

Re:La Folie Douce.........is it just me.....?

I think the key here is that Apres Ski is what you want it to be, depends on what you want

- Hot chocolate in the apartment
- Drink in the hotel bar
- Few beers in the pub
- Few more beers in the lively pub
- Few beers in the lively pub that involves dancing on tables
- Shed loads of beers at the Krazy Kangaroo (St Anton) and skiing down to the village in the dark half (fully) cut
- Shed loads of beer, dancing in just shorts and (if the girls are lucky), naked

I know which I prefer (having done a few of the above), and it isn't the hot chocolate.... ;)

Re:La Folie Douce.........is it just me.....?

Thank God someone brought this up. I visited the FD in ADH a couple of years ago. Its Frances way of doing Apres ski up the mountain like the Austrians do, but very very badly.
It seems to attract a collection of pompous image conscious ponces who take themselves wayyyyyy too seriously ordering Bollinger by the bottle, and an even more worrying crowd of middle aged ex 80's ravers who still insist on dancing on tables to droning euro-house whilst smoking a spliff.
Add into that the freak show that is the camp as Christmas staff who "dance" there......

It was ok for half an hour and a couple of quick beers with a mate, as it was on the way down, but nothing more.

If you want to have proper fun, nothing compare to Austria, but even then my idea of apres ski these days is a friendly small bar down in the old town of wherever I am. Somewhere with a bit of character, some locals, no one in Onesies rolled down to the waist or GoPros on selfie sticks.....and a nice chat near an open fire about the day just finished and the one ahead the next day.

Or am I also getting too old?

I have been to the FD in VDI - and had a very enjoyable time.
Food is excellent - and of high standard.
The Cabaret is great fun and well done.
But do leave before the yobs, drunks, strippers etc etc arrive towards the mid to late afternoon.
And that's the beauty of this site, we all have differing opinions! I'm in Morzine next week and am very much looking forward to finding a good atmosphere in a bar with decent beer.....any suggestions would be welcome.

I'm glad it wasn't just me that wasn't a fan though!

I'm sure if I was in my mid twenties I'd love the place but as others have said it just looks far to pretentious for my liking. A few good beers in a good bar after a day on the slopes is perfect and if it has a pool table that's a bonus.

I ventured into FD in AlpD'Huez last week. Not impressed.

Even in my twentys, and ever since, I have preferred playing guitar alongside harp, in Austria, playing Tirol songs.

Also, teaching my Austrian friends the rude words to the rugby songs....

Re:La Folie Douce.........is it just me.....?

Been to the FD in VDI and the one in VT (that was enough so missed meribel from my set)

I'd agree with much of what has been said: worth experiencing once "for the experience" and then no more - I too prefer a quieter vibe these days and I think Tony captures it well with "Somewhere with a bit of character, some locals, no one in Onesies rolled down to the waist or GoPros on selfie sticks"

The VDI FD at least has the option of a gondola down / multiple runs (green, red, blue and black) to La Daille - the VT one has everyone heading down plein sud back to town at the end of the day - terrifying to me and my wife after she was hit there years ago so we avoid after about 3:30

Re:La Folie Douce.........is it just me.....?

Dave, like me you have a clear preference for Austria, not that its too obvious ;-)

However, I did find some nice little bars tucked away in old ADH, as long as you avoid the horrible downstairs of hotel type places with no character. Pacific in particular served me well on one visit, with a few other nice places in that area down below the lobster pot lift base.

In Villeneuve village, Serre Chevalier, I also discovered some really cool rustic places full of character and style. Most unusual for France, and especially compared with the purpose built uninspiring architecture of Val Thorens, for example.

Heres the thing though - I didn't take to the Folie Deuce at all, yet found the KK and Mooserwirt in St Anton oddly exciting and enticing. Same kind of thing, but just done differently I suppose. Maybe thats what Austria does better. However, the ski off from there, especially after dark, is helicopter territory. Mental. I understand its the same in Saalbach at the Gothstall......

I guess grabbing handfuls of 8 euro bottles of beer all seems a bit, well, crap these days, compared to a sensibly priced bottle of Prosecco, a nice pint of local craft lager, and a plate full of Antipasti.

Did I REALLY just say that?????
