Low altitude resorts, UK half term, DIY

Family of 4 (parents, 2 kids, 15 and 12) want low altitude resort (one of us has benign heart condition at altitude) for half term (daughter has exams after Easter so cannot ski Easter). TO prices are mental so doing DIY. Last 2 years been to Norway (and may well go back there).

All intermediates. Kids wanting to speed down reds and blacks. Parents wanting to pootle down blues and reds.

Anyone got any suggestions for low altitude resorts which will be fairly snow-sure at half term and which are not too rammed? Thinking of some of the Austrian resorts. Is driving to Austria that much of a drag? I have done some epic drives across France in the summer (10-12 hour drives, with suitable stops).

Hi Dobby, driving to Austria is not that much longer than driving to France. We did Soll two seasons ago and it took us 10 hours from Calais, same time it took us to get to Kitzbuhel from Calais a few years before that.

We route up through Belgium, Holland (or Lichtenstein depending on where we are heading), Germany and down into Austria, so there are no French tolls to pay either.

I agree the drive is ok, can be done in one day but a overnite break is best depending on what time you leave UK . I prefer a break so I can stop driving when it's still daylight. I bought good quality snow tyres two years ago as I drive a lot in Italy and you have to have them on some roads, but I think they are great much better than snow chains which are a real pain to fit. I would buy myself the snow tyres and enjoy the snow and skiing.
