Re:Rough cost of Driving to the Alps??

Your costs seem ok to me. But you may want breakdown cover and you will need snow chains and or snow tyres. If going to Italy you must have on certain roads snow tyres. I have driven with both and would not drive in the mountains without snow tyres now. Have used chains but they are a real pain to fit.. Enjoy your trip

Re:Rough cost of Driving to the Alps??

Me and my friend would both be taking our sons so the cost would be 50/50
I much Prefer to fly but as we are thinking Easter half term, I'm guessing our normal cost of flights and transfer of GBP100-150 would be significantly higher this time of year.

Re:Rough cost of Driving to the Alps??

Hi Wasley.

I regularly drive down to the Alps for skiing and personally would not want to fly any more, much prefer the freedom to take all my gear so I have a choice when out there. I think we have driven for skiing on about 20 occasions, including Andorra, France, Switzerland, Austria and Italy.

I would also agree that your figures look OK. Fuel costs will obviously depend on the economy of your car, but the tolls look pretty good. I use a sanef tag, and here is my last trip breakdown to Tignes when I went on the J2Ski holiday out there.

13/01/13 09:33 SANEF A26 CALAIS A26 REIMS (COURCY) 01 21.30
13/01/13 13:23 SANEF A26 REIMS NORD (ORMES) A26 LIMITE SANEF/APRR 01 10.40
13/01/13 13:23 APRR A26 LIMITE APRR / SANEF A6 VILLEFRANCHE-LIMAS 01 29.70
13/01/13 14:27 AREA A43 ST QUENTIN FAL. BARR A43 CHAMBERY NORD 01 10.80
13/01/13 14:51 AREA A43 CHIGNIN BARRIERE A430 STE HELENE BARRIERE 01 5.10
20/01/13 10:26 AREA A430 STE HELENE
BARRIERE
A43 CHIGNIN BARRIERE 01 5.10
20/01/13 11:21 AREA A43 CHAMBERY NORD A43 ST QUENTIN FAL. BARR 01 10.80
20/01/13 15:11 APRR A6 VILLEFRANCHE-LIMAS A26 LIMITE APRR / SANEF 01 29.70
20/01/13 15:11 SANEF A26 LIMITE SANEF/APRR A26 REIMS NORD (ORMES) 01 10.40
20/01/13 17:47 SANEF A26 REIMS (COURCY) A26 CALAIS 01 21.30
Subtotal for Tag No XXX 154.60

I am pretty close to the Eurotunnel, so a fairly easy journey for me, but I would suggest that as you will be going with 4 persons and from Portsmouth, you may just want to consider breaking the journey on the way out. This means you will arrive fresher and if you plan a stop down near Lyon, you can get an early start up the mountain on your arrival day and hopefully beat the rush.

Don't forget the required essentials as well, yellow jackets, spare bulbs etc. etc. And I would also agree with Andid regarding winter tyres and insurance. I now use them as a matter of course in the UK between November and April, so not something I really need to bother with.

Feel free to ask any other questions.

FQ.

Re:Rough cost of Driving to the Alps??

Tignes was just a resort i pluckled out of the air.

Any resorts you recommend that may be a better value or a bit closer

As ive only been to Andorra and Austria
As its Easter preferable with sking above 2000 metres

thanks

Re:Rough cost of Driving to the Alps??

Wasley, if you have only plucked Tignes out of the air, and obviously from your post, cost is a concern, why not start from Portsmouth ~ Cherborg? Would that work?
Re:Rough cost of Driving to the Alps??

Equally, if cost is a concern then I would suggest Austria or the Dolomites. The drive may be a little further, but if you route through Belgium, Holland (or Luxembourg), Germany then Austria (Italy if required) you completely remove the French tolls. Also, in my experience the cost of the holiday and beers etc will be cheaper.

Only issue may be the dates. Your initial post said Easter half term, then it was just Easter. Easter is early next year at the end of March, I'm sure there are plenty of people on here who can tell you the best "snow sure" resorts for that time of year, then do your planning.

Re:Rough cost of Driving to the Alps??

having done it several times and once from Portsmouth/Le Havre We did L'Havre> Grand Massif quite easily in a day with the overnight on the boat. The N roads were great and we did it this way coming back .. no tolls but slower

Re:Rough cost of Driving to the Alps??

The costings look roughly right. We have a place in the Swiss 4 Valleys and generally drive down unless it's just a long Weekend. We have a SANEF tag as well, and lend it to relatives when they go. Generally, we stop half-way outbound (at le val Moret motel, Magnant, near Troyes) and drive back in one go. You could do it in one go down but if the weather's bad you'll wish you'd taken a break. I'd recommend being strict about swapping drivers every 2 hours, however gung-ho they may be about pressing on. We have winter tyres now and they've proved invaluable on a number of occasions, both en route and just getting out of the accommodation garage. This was us driving over the Jura Mountains this February (on Pirelli Sottozero II winters):

Chains would have been no use here - in alternating thin (like above, at about 800 metres (the highest point was 1000m)) and thick snow you can't be taking them off and on again all the time. We still have them for the odd occasion where it's icy/steep.

Driving means you can take lots of supplies with you and be fairly independent even in the worst case scenario. I haven't used a transfer bus in years since I found myself , wife and three young kids at the mercy of operators who seemed genuinely surprised it was snowing and had nothing on board as contingency for extended delays (food, drink).
