Blades sticking out of my suitcase

My ski blades are sticking out of my suitcase by 5 inches. They are all covered in neoprene and duct tape and the case is secure with the zips right up close either side and a piece of copper wire going through the lock holes on the zips. They are also secured to the clothes straps inside the bag so can't slide out or be pulled out....basically, will the let me put them through check in to get on the plane Saturday :?:

Not a chance. You could try calling the airline in advance asking for advice but it's unlikely.

Re:Blades sticking out of my suitcase

What do you reckon if I put them in a tube, 6 inch diameter by 90mm long and put it in as a second piece of hand luggage? It wouldn't be outsize baggage would it?

Re:Blades sticking out of my suitcase

Lot of people are very good on blades and can ski them literally everywhere. Blades are often recommended for people who can't figure out how to get out of the back seat. Since blades have no tails to ride, people tend to learn good form fairly quickly:)

DPS skis gave me that same feeling, definitely not easy with no tails.

verbier_ski_bum says "... ski them literally everywhere..."

Ok, they will help you with balance, but I seriously disagree with saying they can be skied everywhere, everywhere a groomer has been perhaps. In natural terrain, off-piste, forget it. Yes, we have a pair in the closet and Yes, have tried them off of a groomed run.

Pay the extra and take some real equipment or hire, better than having wasted your money because you can't ski the terrain you want to.

Re:Blades sticking out of my suitcase

Have to say they always struck me a something for people who can't and don't want to put effort to learn to carve. There may be a use in balance (one run a day) but we should also remember that a lot of power comes from tail of the skis. Watch a racer and they are certainly not shy to exploit this before fighting to get pull legs back underneath before initiation of next turn. Nice idea in the late 90's should probably be in the bin. Skis technology and the technique to exploit that has moved on.
