New helmet

Hello everyone and Happy New Year!

I have just bought this helmet

Ok. It looks like a ski helmet. Very similar to a Lidl one actually but 6 times more expensive.
May or may not be comfortable, and you will find out if it works if you bang your head.
Anything else you would like an opinion on?

Yes please Brucie, just one more opinion if I may. How old do you think you were when you started becoming so helpful?
This is a skiing forum and I have asked for people's thoughts on a ski helmet, which happens to have a visor and I haven't many about.

Didnt mean to be rude. Its just that people usually ask for opinions on an item before they buy it not after.
Presumably you like it and can give your opinion of the item to help people with their research and choice.

So when people come on here having booked a ski holiday and ask what the resort is like, presumably you'd say to them you should have asked before booking?? Poor argument I'm afraid.

I would actually! I don't think anyone would book a ski holiday without firstly researching whether the resort would suit their needs. I certainly wouldn't.

I have bought Bolle Slide Visor ski helmet 2 seasons ago.
The sizing is on a generous size and there is no adjustment. However it sounds as Bolle addressed the problem since with Click-to-Fit system? It can also be a bit drafty, as there is no foam padding around the circumference of the visors. Saying this, as a spectacles wearer I much prefer it to a standard helmet + goggles combination. It offers better peripheral vision and looks smart. Visors can be exchanged easily and quickly.
However IMHO the best visor helmets on the market are made by Kask.

Be good to hear how you get on with it. Must admit I have never considered a visor helmet. Suppose the main advantage is that you don't have to worry about your mask fitting properly with a particular (standard) helmet and you can wear glasses underneath without having to worry about masks fitting over your glasses.

I don't actually wear glasses (prescription) and I rarely wear goggles, just sunglasses. So I thought a helmet with a visor was a good alternative. Will let you know what it's like!

G'day skiers.

I like your helmet. I have never used a helmet with integrated goggles before. I'd be very interested in what you think in terms of keeping out the wind, snow and cold when you are moving. Hopefully you fit it properly before purchasing. Helmets fitting properly is everything.

I bought the/a Lidl helmet and while it was far less then 1/6th the price at e20 it doesn't look 1/2 as fast. I too would like to know how the visor works out.

I couldn't agree more. A good helmet fitter is hard to come by. Anyone know of any that come recommended?

Just to endorse what Brucie said, Get someone with helmet experience to help you get the proper fit. The two most important things are comfort and function. They are both achieved by getting a quality helmet and having it fit properly. In Canada, it's hard to find a helmet for sale that is not CSA approved, that is it meets a minimum safety standard. After that, you get what you pay for. If it's not comfortable, you won't wear it, if it does not fit, it will not provide the protection you are looking for (i.e. you will look funny and it serves no purpose). Or even worse, it looks great and it serves no purpose!!

Having both been a ski patroller in Canada (South Rockies) for many years, and a father of ski family, this is a subject I tend to ramble on about.

Get a good one, protect your investment (your head).

Helmet arrived in the post today, I had already had it fitted in a shop i spotted it in and then ordered it off the internet as it was GBP40 cheaper :) I'd forgotten how comfy it was! The visor does have foam on it and whilst it doesn't feel as snug on your face as a pair of goggles, it still feel as though it will keep you well protected from the elements!

I am off to Meribel next Sunday, so i will let you know how it dealt with wind/snow (hopefully) on my return.... :thumbup:

I have booked it now, so there isn't much i can do about it! :D All i'm bothered about is that i go and have a great time with my mates and get away from it all for a week. If the snow is rubbish - it's just bad luck and we will make the best of it! :-) and if it turns out to be good snow, well that's a bonus to what will already be a fantastic week away!

That's my attitude towards snow conditions anyway! :D

No matter what make or type of helmet you buy it's most important that you do the strap up properly, if you wear it loose like this

it could come off in a fall or collision.

Last season whilst riding on a chair lift I saw a helmet rolling down a piste, the person who had been wearing it was lying unconscious some distance above it, shortly afterwards a helicopter arrived.

Next time you're standing in a lift queue, look around and see how many people haven't got their chin straps fastened properly.

Anyway the Meribel webcams show that there seems to be plenty of white stuff so all will be fine for you. VT will likely be slightly better due to altitude so I'd make sure you get the 3V pass just in case. You can lift out of Meribel and into VT in no time now since they replaced the old bubble that looked like it was from a 60s Bond film

Good luck on the Helmet too - I've looked at that style a few times but couldn't quite commit to the full "Top Gun" look -)

We have got the 3V pass which is a bonus. See Top Gun is one of my favourite films, so I had to go for that look -)

if you have 3V pass then you are about as guaranteed snow as you can be. I hope (and am sure you will) have a great time

And if you get too close for missiles you can always switch to guns.....

it'll be fine - the 3 Valleys is a target rich environment. And if anyone gets too close to you on the slopes you can just put the breaks on and they'll fly right by....

Tony H, I guess you have put that link on to show the "lack" of snow and "good luck" was meant sarcastically. But last time I checked no one was bothered about skiing around a roundabout. The only thing i'm bothered about is that piste on the webcam which has people skiing on, which leads me to think it's skiable and if there is that much snow at 1400m i'm happy as Larry.

I take it you're glass half empty kinda guy..... :roll:

The snow conditions are shaping up nicely although less so at lower altitudes so a ski-in/ski-out can be a problem if possible at all. But other than this and dangerous avalanche conditions due to weird weather, skiing is not much worse than at this time last season. Definitely more snow is needed and some consistent colder weather would be welcome too, but if you are heading out soon you will be fine.

as already said - there's plenty on the slopes so the state of the roads is immaterial (indeed no white stuff on the roads means safer walking round resort)

I think you'll be great using those new uplift devices - unless the whole thread has missed that you're a cross country kind of person.......

I am a realist and don't like giving people false hopes but at the same time don't like unnecessary doom and gloom because resorts ARE open and there IS snow to ski, though probably not to front doors, as for off-piste it's better to stick to low-angle, low-consequences slopes and rolling hills rather than big faces for the time being. I see the weather every day, and mountains are in under 2 hours drive, so it's fairly safe to say what the conditions are now and what the snow is like.

I really liked the helmet, it was really warm and the adjustable vents made it easy to cool your head down if it got a bit too hot.
The whole visor idea on top of the helmet is exceptional. I only really used the bad light visor when conditions were windy and visibility poor. I found the visor gave a better field of view than a normal pair of goggles and more of your face was covered. Foam over the nose shape and on the underside of the visor ensured draft was minimal. I wore the visor with a buff which covered all my face (bar my eyes obviously!) and not once did the visor steam up. So all in all a fantastic piece of kit and brilliant for anyone who hates having to carry goggles around with them.

You can also use this visor on top of glasses. I did try mine on top of my sunglasses and again no steaming up occurred of either my sunglasses or the visor itself.

Very useful info - especially for those who need to ski in prescription glasses where goggles can be such a problem.

Other option for those who require prescription glasses is inserts for your goggles (fit all brands and models). These worked very well during my last trip and are a good option if you aren't keen on using contact lenses.

Thanks Blackpool-skier that's great. It's my first helmet & because I've always struggled with goggles because of the peripheral vision I was hoping the visor would solve that problem - and now I know it does. 12 sleeps
