What makes a good ski sock?

Back in the day people used to love the tube. Things has moved on a lot since then, so what makes a good one these days?

OK, to answer the question seriously, for me a good ski sock needs to do the following. Be comfortable, support my calf, wick away moisture, be warm, have no seems that can annoy you or cause issues, be fairly thin and finally have cushioning in just the right places, so shin area, heel and rear of ankle and the top of toes.

That is what makes a good sock for me.

Thin, with minimal reinforcement on the "rubby" bits (technical term), no seams and shaped like a, well you know, a foot. Apologies to anyone with tube-shaped lower legs, but tube socks were never a good idea for anyone other than cheap-skate manufacturers...

For me, a decent price makes a good ski sock. And then once I've bought them I expect them to last for years and years as long as I look after them carefully. I wouldn't pay more than about GBP8 for a good pair of ski socks, so I should think these ones would suit me.

The OH has quite chunky calfs and struggles with getting on some types. Are there any out there that are made with this In mind? Last year there were a couple of pairs she could not get over her elephant legs!

I have had a similar issue Icy......
Gave these people a call for advice and they were very helpful suggesting which brand would be best suited as they are all cut a bit different.

I wear thin compression socks that are shaped specifically to left and right feet

I have small feet and large calves - 21" circum, Nike do a range of footy/running socks that fit well and are wicking so low odour. I think they're about GBP8-10 per pair

Actually Dave Mac cotton socks are the last thing i would wear. They hold on to moisture (sweat) so smell, and your feet can get freezing cold late in the afternoon.

I use Smartwool paid about GBP16 from the ski show about six years ago, as you guys know I only have one pair of socks and they have lasted extremely well ....really good value for money :thumbup:

This is all well and good, but the problem is the chunky calfs (or is it calves?). Have emailed the site that wickers suggested

If her calves are really that big

then the only solution I can think of is a pair of BootDoc compression socks.
I order to determine the right size she will have to have her calves measured
If you don't want to shell out Euro39.95 a pair http://shop.sport65.de/product_info.php?language=en&products_id=2189 she could just wear pop socks.

If the circumference of her calves is greater than 17" when measured at approx 11" from the floor she will have major boot fit / function issues. Ski boots are designed to fit people whose calves are 13-14" in circumference.
