Ischgl or St Anton, short stay accommodation?

I am trying to organise my second trip this winter and want to try Austria. I have only been to St Anton and had a bad injury there so tend not bother and tend to go to France and Italy.
However after paying Euro50 for a burger and a beer in Les Arcs last winter I have had enough.
I love Italy and really want to try Dolomites but this trip is with my group of friends who value a good night out as much as the skiing. The serious ski trip with the serious skiers is in December.
As we fly from Dublin we are very limited with flights but I have found good flight times to Zurich or Munich and as we are going the first week of March we want a fairly snow sure resort.
So far Ischgl and St Anton are looking like our best bet but I am finding it very difficult getting accommodation. So far there is 4 lads, all 40ish who will ski the whole mountain and love a few beers after skiing so the standard of accommodation is not that important as long as it's near to the slopes.

Any help from some of you that have good experience of Austria would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Solden has plenty to go at with guaranteed snow and some atmospheric, if a little rowdy at times, night life and you can get a lift pass that also covers obergurgl 15/20 minutes up the valley

Not sure what you mean by short stay ,but if you mean a few days then you wont find any accommodation until nearer the time, unless you can pay mega bucks or stay out of town.
We went to Solden last year and we found 1 place that would take us for 5 days and we had to arrive on a Sunday.Closer to our departure date more unsold places became available. They want you to book the week Sat-Sat or Sun-Sun.
We havent learnt from last year as weve booked Wed-Monday flights and going to Ischgl at the beginning of march.
Fingers crossed we will find some accommodation
Yeah, only four nights.
I have been booking short stay ski breaks for years now and getting accommodation is always a challenge.
The problem with waiting until last minute is that there is probably 7 or 8 of us going so I need to organise something sooner rather than later.

Re:Ischgl or St Anton, short stay accommodation?

If there are just 4 of you, then it would make sense to delay your decision about choice of location until mid-January. By then, you will have a reasonable idea of where the good snow lies.

Munich is great for access to the Kitzbuhleralpen, either by train, or with car hire. So, you could locate in the Skiwelt, (Ellmau, Soll, Scheffau), in Kitzbuhel, or other areas along the Inn valley.

In the meantime, you can do the accommodation research. Using the Skiwelt as an example, if you email the tourist board, gives your dates and room requirements, they will put this out to all the hotels and pensions in the region. The individual providers can then email you directly. So you will have done your homework, you check the January snow conditions, and also the J2ski snow history. You should be well armed for making a booking for March in mid-January.

Re:Ischgl or St Anton, short stay accommodation?

Gareth

Ischgl or St Anton are both good bets for what you want - both have excellent skiing and mad apres ski . However, you will struggle to get accommodation near the snow for anything close to sensible money . Finding accommodation can be a struggle for short stays but can be done. Best to keep to one week if at all possible, i.e. start your trip on a Saturday. Alternatively, take the late flight to Zurich on Friday evening and stay somewhere half way to resort on Friday night and then head straight to the slopes on Saturday morning. This way, you only mess up 1 week for property owners. Decent ski bus services in both places so be prepared to stay out of town but budget for a few taxi fares for drinking evenings . St Jacob or Pettneu near St Anton have lots of apartments/rooms while Kappl is not a bad option for Iscghl if you can't find anything closer to town.

If these don't work out, you could look at somewhere like Flims/Laax in Switzerland. It is only about 2 hours drive from Zurich and has wonderful skiing. Hotels are much more open to weekend trips but apres ski and food are expensive:evil:.

Another +1 for Solden

I organised a long Easter weekend trip for 6x40 somethings a few years ago and Ischgl didn't want to know. We ended up going to Solden and had a blast. The apres ski bar at the bottom of the piste was pumping

4 of us shared the top floor "suite" at Hotel Sunny Solden and we had plenty of room. Certainly a bedroom each from memory
We've also done Cervinia for the long Easter weekends and that's always a laugh too
