I nicked this off a link from Rivington Alpine. Having looked through them, a large proportion could be awarded to some of the guys I went skiing with this season

It's not. People who can't ski are those who always complain. Slopes are too busy, there are too many beginners, too many snowboarders, wind is too cold, chairs are too slow, there are too many gondolas or too many drags, runs are too wide or too narrow, snow is too hard or too soft and grooming doesn't stay perfect for long enough. They are worried too much what other skiers are doing behind them instead of watching their own lines. They will stay forever on top of an empty run until the crowd catches up with them and then complain that hearing others approaching makes them nervous. They want the mountain to accommodate them instead of sucking it up and adapt. The rest can ski. Regardless of their level. They just go and do it.

You've described miserable gits - you give them a tenner and they'd complain it was creased! That attitude prevails whether they can ski or not!

Those that "can ski" and those that only "think they can ski". Most of us mortals we will just fleeter between the two. Enjoying deep light power but less so that breakable crust; nailing turns on that perfectly groomed run but less so first thing before the sun has kissed it. At least these re-calibrations of our technique remind us that we really should spend less time working and more time skiing. The real joy of skiing is that these feelings start from day, one week one and for most of us will never stop.

Think I agree with VerbierSkiBum on this one. Just do it. Yes, the viz is pants. Yes, the piste prep ain't great. But you are on a mountain in winter. And there's a few inches of powder on top of the pisted run, you have two planks on your feet, you are not at work and won't it feel good once you've got down this run in sub-optimal conditions?

I think you managed to just describe the best ski conditions. Few inches of powder on piste is where everyone manages to feel like a hero.

I always try to stifle that internal grumbling about "less than perfect" conditions which seems to come at times by thinking how pleased I will feel with myself when I've made it down despite the chopped-upness, zero-visibility, slush, ice, crowds, winds etc etc. Usually works for me !

That, my friend, is absolutely spot on.

I have a friend who joined our ski group a number of times, and he was exactly that person, as was his Mrs to a slightly lesser degree. Look out the window at breakfast - I see snow and think a great exciting day is ahead. They say its cold, too hard, not nice, poor vis, etc.
They dont move around the mountain much preferring to stay in their comfort zones rather than actually trying to progress and push the limits a little. Up to them of course, but they'll never progress beyond timid intermediates, especially when they refuse further lessons because they're 'Happy with bumbling around on easy blues"

I am sure he speaks highly of you as a 'friend' too. Ever considered that he enjoys easy blues rather? Each to their own surely ? I bet there will be some people (few of course) that think you are slow and need to get a move on. There is always someone better than you that thinks you are not trying hard enough.

It is a holiday after all, not a bootcamp :wink:

And theres always someone out there who likes to criticise at every opportunity just because they're the argumentative provocative type. You might know one or two yourself.
Its not about bootcamp, whatever that might be in your little world, or about being better than anyone. Its about the numpties who go despite not actually "getting it" and moaning to the world in public about their reasons not to go out because the weather isnt bright blue skies and windless. Actually.

31 all the gear no idea. Owns more ski equipment than is really healthy, if only they'd spent a fraction of the cost on lessons.

32 the overtaker. Skis in a group of slightly slower skiers, starts at the back, finishes first. Possibly defective in the trouser area.
