Les Arcs and La Plagne ski conditions by month

My wife and I are considering 10 days skiing in Les Arcs in mid March. She is very concerned the conditions will be soft and spring like though. Has anyone had any experience with the general conditions this time of the season? Thanks.

Re:Les Arcs and La Plagne ski conditions by month

Hi, welcome to J2Ski...

Les Arcs in March is generally pretty darned good. No guarantees, of course, but you can see from our snow depth history for Les Arcs that snow depths actually peaked in March in the last 2 winters :-

With plenty of skiing above 2,000 metres, Les Arcs is not somewhere you should really be worrying about for March TBH. La Plagne is similar. Pick one of the higher villages/centres and you'll be higher than the majority of European resorts.

HTH

Re:Les Arcs and La Plagne ski conditions by month

Hmmmm......not that I relish challenging the wise words of admin but we did experience very slushy conditions in Les Arcs and La Plagne in March 2011 (Sat 5th to Sat 12th). it was generally ok high up but anything below about 1,800m was not great. The air temperature was very high and stones were rolling down onto the pistes by the end of the week. We could have skied in our t shirts!

Re:Les Arcs and La Plagne ski conditions by month

Les Arcs & La Plagne are great in March, and there was loads of fresh snow for the previous 2 years. 70% of the Paradiski is above 2000m and there are 2 glaciers, so you will always find good conditions. 2011 was that really bad year for all resorts, so it was slushy then, but traditionally, March is a great time to go. There are waterslides dotted about La Plagne & Les Arcs for a bit of fun, plus w/c 14th & 21st March, some chalets will be able to offer you a free upgrade from La Plagne to the full Paradiski pass.

Re:Les Arcs and La Plagne ski conditions by month

This is great information and I really appreciate everyone's feedback and experiences. From the research I did March is a very good month - Lots of snow, long days, low crowds and, historically, still fairly cold temps especially in the early day. By cold I mean below 0 C for most of the day. Of course it feels much warmer with the sun out at this elevation. Most of my European experiences have been in Switzerland (Grindelwald, Davos, etc. and are usually the first week(s) of March. Any other comments/experiences I would appreciate those as well.

March is a good month generally unless winter happens to be warm. But even then upper slopes don't get very slushy till around noon.

Re:Les Arcs and La Plagne ski conditions by month

We were in La Plagne in March and the conditions were terrible. So many south facing slopes, slush by mid-morning.
Only decent snow we found all week was top third of Aiguille Rouge across in Les Arcs.
Last season was just one of those rubbish seasons. We were due one.

Re:Les Arcs and La Plagne ski conditions by month

Having spent the winter living in La Plagne and skiing 6 days a week I will give my run down by month!!

When we arrived at the beginning of December there was loads and loads of snow but it was melting quickly due to the high temperatures and on the first day of the season I skied in a soft shell in the morning and a T shirt later on.
we had a slight dusting of snow just before Christmas, the week between Christmas and new year was very snowny.

January started warm and dry but soon turned cold and started to dump it down and it pretty much carried on till just before half term, from then on the temperatures were high and it was fairly dry.
March saw a few fair size dumps but it was generally warm with often no night freeze slopes were slushy from the off by the end of March and April temperatures over 15 degrees were common at 2000 meters.

Les Arc's slopes didn't hold up to well to the warm weather and we didn't venture over that often towards the end of the season.

Re:Les Arcs and La Plagne ski conditions by month

Les Arcs, what can I say. It is an amazing place at any time of the winter. Joking apart. I think unless you are very unlucky March is normally a great time to go. Get your dates right and you will miss the French, other European and British school holidays.

I do not agree with Matt. We had a great time towards the end of the season in Les Arcs and i was skiing in both places until the lifts closed and yes it was slushy by late morning towards the end of March and April, but then it was the same everywhere.

Whatever dates you choose, you will still have a good time as long as there is some snow. Paradiski is mostly high so if it is closed there it is likely to be bad in most places. Have a good trip wherever you go.
