A long Journey ? Venice to Ponte Di Legno (Passo Tonale)?

Hi Guys,

I'm worried I've booked my self a horrible journey to go skiing.

I land in Venice then need to get to Ponte Di Legno where I've booked a hotel for 7 nights.

Have you done this trip by train or bus?

Did it take long?

Where I could I find information on options for this trip?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I think you might find getting there by public transport rather difficult.

The Flyski shuttle bus from the airports to Passo Tonale only goes from Milan Bergamo and Verona and it finishes on 6th April.

You could go by train from Venice to Trento via Verona, and then on the local train to Male, where there's supposed to be a coach to Passo Tonale (although the coach may well have stopped running by then as well). And - it will take ages, even if the coach is running!

I should think the best thing would be to e-mail the local tourist board about this. They were very helpful when I was contacting them about how to get to Folgarida from Verona airport.

You might end up having to hire a car. It's about a 3 1/2 hour drive from Venice airport to Passo Tonale.

You will probably have a long journey. I think there are two airports near Venice. Your best bet would be a coach if it's possible. Taxis are very expensive in italy. If you want to use trains for your journey or part of it they are generally reliable and relatively cheap. You will probably need to get to the mainline in Venice either by bus, possible train or water bus, the vepperata sorry about spelling and then to the nearest station to Tonale.

you would have been better flying to Verona,,the other option is hiring a car but that depends on how many you are...its not a bad journey ..about 3 hours but if you do make sure you have plenty of petrol as a lot of the garages only take some special cars ..or cash in a machine at the weekends

if you have a car also you could get the skirama pass and ski the whole area

The journey from Venice airport to Ponte di Legno via Trento using public transport takes approx 8.5 hrs and involves 7 changes. Much quicker (5 hrs) would be shuttle bus to Venice Mestre station, train to Edolo via Bresica and a taxi from Edolo to Ponte di Legno, total cost will be about Euro130 return.

Following the above route the journey by car would take about 3.5 hrs. Assuming you are going for a week starting 5th April you could hire a car for about Euro110, motorway tolls would cost a further Euro24 and you would need fuel for 600km.

Thanks very much. It's ok I've worked out that by train I can get from Venice to Moreno in about 3 hours 40 minutes then from Moreno to Ponte Di leg no it's another 30 minutes by bus, van or what ever I can jump on to !

Now to pray for snow . . .

Hi PowderManDan - that route sounds a lot quicker - but where is Moreno?

I tried asking google maps for a route from Venice to Ponte di Legno by public transport (I forgot to say Venice airport). It seems to be more or less the route SwingBeep suggested except that they reckon it would take 8 1/2 hours and he found a quicker way of doing it. This is what google maps said:

I think he means Merano, it's miles out of the way. From there it would take 5 hrs by public transport or 2.5 hrs by car to get to Ponte di Legno. A better route, but still longer (over 6 hours) and with more changes than the one I suggested above would be; shuttle bus to Venice Mestre, train to Verona Porta Nuova, train to Mezzocorona, bus to Mezzolombardo, train to Male, bus to Passo Tonale and a taxi to Ponte di Legno. There is a shuttle bus between Passo Tonale and Ponte di Legno but it only operates until 6th April.

AllyG, I find that Rome2Rio http://www.rome2rio.com/ is better than Google maps for planning journeys on public transport in Italy. Google makes a right meal of getting from Venice Mestre to Bresica, there's a direct train every hour http://goo.gl/SCMHMr It doesn't list every service, as you mentioned there is a bus service between Edolo and Ponte di Legno http://www.sab-autoservizi.it/htdocs/orari/ricora.htm

Hi there, damn ! Your right. Why did I come up a 30 minute journey !!

I'll have to go to Mezzolombardon and then it's another 1 hour and 30 minutes. I wish I'd never booked this now.

It wouldn't be so bad if you drove from Venice airport. It's only 3 1/2 hours by road.
Other than that, maybe you should try cancelling that booking and try somewhere else?

I tested out the Google Maps public transport route planner for Verona airport to Folgarida, and it was spot on - it had the route I'd used, which the Folgarida tourist board had advised me was the best way to do it :)

It's ok I can breathe a bit better now . . . This is what I've worked out:

Venice Marco polo Airport to Venice Mestre train station: 15 minutes
Venice Meste to Trento: 2 hours 10 minutes.
Trento to Male (On the Dolomiti Express): 1 hour 27 minutes
Male to Ponte Di legno: A bus ride of approximately 53 minutes

So thats a total of 4 hours and 45 minutes not including the waiting and changing so probably 7 hours Venice Airport to Hotel.

That means I'll get there about 7 pm . . . Could be worse.

Saying this the fast trains are not available for my times so this could all change when I arrive.

I can't cancel the trip or I'll have to pay the hotel fee and I can't afford to hire a car so I just have to get on with it and enjoy it.

I've learned my lesson to not book so quickly next time.

I think the Male route will be OK as long as that coach is going. I couldn't find anything about it, except that it's meant to be there!

I went from Male to Verona airport, and I've still got the time-table for the Dolomiti Express.
You have to be careful with the time-table because some of the trains don't run on Sundays etc. I had to get help from the manager of our hotel in Folgarida with this, as the taxi driver told me the train we were aiming for didn't run on Sundays! Luckily the taxi driver was wrong. Which day are you travelling on? I think the trains that don't run on Sundays are the ones marked with a square.

The Dolomiti express station at Trento is about 200 yards from the mainline one, on your left as you come out of the station. They sell tickets for it at this little station, and it only costs around 4 euros. They have a special carriage for people with skis, but a ski bag doesn't fit in the rack, as it's meant to be a daily ski commuter train.

There are indirect trains from Venice to Trento, via Verona, as well as the direct ones. And some of the trains from Verona to Trento are slow ones, which take about 1 hour and 40 minutes, as compared with the fast ones at just over an hour. Don't forget to stamp your ticket on the platform. I was surprised at the time-tables on the wall in Verona - they have the platform marked on them, so presumably each train always comes into the same platform.

I think you are making this much more difficult than it needs to be, the transfer is long but it's pretty straightforward. Forget the route via Trento / Male, according to the timetable there isn't a bus to Ponte di Legno and the last bus to Passo Tonale arrives at 16:23 http://srvtt.pegasus.it/OrariDiLinea/OrariDiDirettrice-E13I-646A.pdf Take the shuttle bus from the airport to Venice Mestre, from there take the train to Edolo http://goo.gl/mmk9CC You will have to change in Brescia where you will probably have to wait a while as there are only 5 trains from Brescia to Edolo a day. Have lunch, look round http://www.bresciatourism.it/en/ From Edolo there are connecting buses to Ponte di Legno at 13:15, 15:15, 17:10 and 19:15 if you arrive later you will have to take a taxi. All this assumes that you are traveling on a Saturday, if this is not the case the timings might be different.

The timetable codes are:
GIOR = every day
FER6 = from Monday to Saturday
LUN = Monday
VEN = Friday
sco6 = school bus from Monday to Saturday

I had no idea how to find that time-table for the bus from Male to Passo Tonale. And you're quite right, it says the bus only runs from 8th December to 6th April. I was worried about that ... I suppose if he was determined to go that route he'd have to get off the stop before and get a taxi - which might be quite expensive. Plus, the time-table is littered with 'only on holidays' etc.

We booked a taxi from Folgarida to Dimaro (only about 10 minutes) on a Sunday and it cost 25 euros, but the taxi driver very kindly said he'd take us on to Male (which is a bigger station with a cafe and things) for the same price. And I expect it would have cost even more if we hadn't booked it ahead of time.

I looked at the link you provided for that train time-table and it says it takes 4 hours from Mestre to Edolo, with a change at Brescia, and costs 40 euros one way, and there's a train at 13-02 and another one at 15-02.

Steady on, all I did was put the airport and destination into a search engine and choose the best route. I only put a bit of effort in when he said he was going to go via Merano which is miles out of the way.

If you are organising a DIY skiing holiday to Italy a transfer using public transport will usually be easier and cheaper if you fly to an airport that is in the same region as the ski resort you want to visit.

Ponte di Legno is in Lombardy and Venice Marco Polo airport is in Veneto so you have to get from Veneto to Lombardy via an interregional service, in this case it's straightforward as Brescia is on the main line from Milan to Venice. From Brescia there is a regional train to Edolo and from there a bus to Ponte di Legno, even though this is the quickest route the travelling time alone (including the shuttle bus from the airport) is 4hrs 32min and the total cost is Euro48.75 each way.

The bus service from Edolo to Ponte di Legno starts at Bergamo airport which is also in Lombardy, it operates every day, the journey takes 3hrs and costs only Euro7.60 each way.

The journey was brilliant. Really enjoyable and effortless.

I get what your saying and will definitely take note of I Ski in Italy again. It was something I booked last minute.

I'm enjoying what looks like the very last week of Skiing here. It's slushy !!
