Decision almost made!

So, after much to-ing and fro-ing, juggling work commitments, hours spent on the winternet, the decision for 2014 is almost made!

The only week we can get away is right at the end of the season - April 19/20 departure - and has come down to four choices: Solden, Obergurgl, Les Arcs or Cervinia.

I have recent experience of Solden and Obergurgl so happy with those; haven't been to Cervinia since 1980 (has it changed much?) and only spent one day a while back in Les Arcs.

So any tips, info, inside knowledge - particularly for an April trip - would be much appreciated from the J2 cogniscenti! Thanks.

Re:Decision almost made!

Lota don't even consider les arcs at that time of year, I'm going end of Feb and in the main winter months it's a top resort but unless its been a vintage snow year give it a miss. Whilst it's a big resort with skiing up to 3200m, most of the best runs are below 1600 through the forest and by the end of April may be lacking in the white stuff as I've experienced in the past. You're safe with Obergurgl though, it's as good as anywhere late April. Happy skiing

Re:Decision almost made!

Cervinia is a high resort, but it really depends on weather. We were in Cervinia in Feb 2012 and it was so warm the lower slopes were slush. You might also want to consider Kaprun (Kitzsteinhorn Glacier). Also Ischgl is another high resort.
Snow record this season is strange. Not much snow in Dec/Jan, but there seems to be loads on the way in Feb and into March according to the forecasts.
Good luck.

Thanks for the replies and the intelligence, especially on Les Arcs. Havxe ruled out Kaprun, although Ischgl made the long list. We're going to leave it pretty much to last minute to book so snow and weather forecast will come into it. I do like the long days of spring skiing, by the way!

Have been late season to Obergurgl for the past two years, with good snow. I would recommend.
I'd agree with Dave, people I know who ran a ski shop always went to obergurgl in April

Re:Decision almost made!

My experience of Les Arcs in March was that of slush and rapidly retreating snow.
Perhaps it might be different in snow better years? I wouldn't consider it in late April.

Re:Decision almost made!

Thanks; wasn't really after a snow conditions discussion as none of us can see that far ahead!! As I said, we're leaving it to the very last minute to try to get the best snow - and it's always a bit of a gamble, particularly that late. Was after a few tips about Les Arcs and how Cervinia had changed from the rather austere, but cheap, resort of 30 years ago. Thank you.
