The 10 "unforgiving" sins beginner skiers make.

All sports have an "unwritten rules ", behaviors not accepted, rules of etiquette.
In past these rules were passed down from fathers, uncles or ski instructors to neophyte skiers.

Now,,,,( you feel in the spaces ).

What are those behaviors?
Here are the ones I was taught. ( I am sure others will add more )

1. Never but never bring skis into chalet, condo, house ( unless house has a ski storage area )

2. Never but never wear jeans while skiing. If you have no idea why,,,,,try it once. Now if you want to be "truly" sinful,,,,,try very tight, thin jeans ladies .

3. Never, but never smoke in chair, gondola, etc,,,

4.Never but never lean skis/board against side of car.

5. Never but never pass your ski guide or instructor in powder.

6. Never try to impress your instructor by saying you are a good skier , "since you ski the bumps, the moguls"

7. Never buy ski equipment above your level of competence.
- ski boot with a flex of 140
- World Cup racing ski
- + 130 mm,,,,, 190 cm. powder ski
( real skiers will just laugh at you )

8. Never lend your tuned/waxed skis to a beginner friend.

9. Never go off piste alone with no support material ( cell is not enough )

10. This last one is my all time 2014 favorite. Want to lose a ski friend ? Try this.
While skiing a glorious long wide, well groomed slope, stop in middle ,,,to take out cell phone and chat!

Small hints to those coming on slopes for first time.
1. Learn to carry skis and poles correctly
2. Learn to get on lift before ski day ( with friends)
3. Learn to fall ( yes there is a correct way )
4. Learn to put on ski boots BEFORE ski holiday. ( Yes there is a correct way,,,,,with baby powder )
5. Learn to walk up slope. No you do not "walk" up with tip straight up hill ( unless you have skins ).

I can't take any list seriously that discusses 'behaviors' instead of behaviour!

(And I wore proofed jeans on my first ski trip, to Italy, in April 1973. They were fine!)

Re:The 10 "unforgiving" sins beginner skiers make.

Probably handy advice for a beginner. I have always wondered about leaning skis against car, I do that sometimes....

Not sure how you learn to get on and off lift before ski day? Unless you have one in your garden? It is a pity there are no videos of me as beginner in my late forties, repeatedly falling off the small drag lift on the beginners' slope, and holding up the queue of children, to the exasperation of the East German lift attendant who spoke no English. I did get the hang of drag lifts after that...

Going off piste alone, even close to the piste, strikes me as a really bad idea, though maybe it is OK if you know you are a really good skier / mountain person with plenty of off-piste experience and training.

Most convenient way to carry skis and poles. Get a shoulder strap, the same as a shoulder strap to carry a rifle.
No fatigue and no knocking persons with your skis when turning arround

Very sensible and, of course, the socially responsible thing to do. Providing employment!
Mind you be careful in France unless your Butler has the correct qualifications. Potentially dangerous if an unqualified Butler carries Skis........

Re:The 10 "unforgiving" sins beginner skiers make.

I think one of the great things about skiing is that you can have fun as mixed groups.

Assist someone to carry skis to bus; which is only really good manners. After that who cares what they get upto as long as they are having fun. People who try to babysit family members or better 1/2's are frankly crazy, that is what ski school is for (only way to learn).

Avoid that rookie mistake and you won't have to worry about the other 9 points.
Re:The 10 "unforgiving" sins beginner skiers make.

Don't let your mates teach you how to ski.

Don't believe your mates when they say that you'll be able to snow plough the black run.

Don't believe your mates when they say that they've never fallen off a button lift. Mind you, it's not a seat.

Don't believe anything your mates tell you. They are invariably worse skiers than they say they are.

If you miss a chair lift, don't try to run after it to "nip in" - saw this last year - lady got a nasty whack from the chair

And don't sit down before the chair is there.....saw that too. Quite funny. But painful.

Don't try to do a snow plough stop when you get off the chair lift just because there's a little slope to go down. You may find that the chair gives you a not-so-gentle push.

Don't try to hug, squeeze, squash or otherwise take me out when you get off the chair.

Don't moan about the cold. It's winter. On a mountain.

No, you are not "carving" when you ski. Looking at the size of you, you are more likely to be "calving".

If you stand-up your skis, do not stand them up in a nice cross shape. Whilst aesthetically pleasing, the nice man/woman from the piste patrol won't be happy when he/she finds you in fine form, having a sarny and can of pop.

Do not play hide and seek in those nice bumps and dips. They are called rollers.

It is not cool to go hooning down a mountain out of control when you are supposed to be following the rep/guide, especially when you are the size of a baby elephant. Except a baby elephant would be better at skiing.

/rant

I'm interested to know how skis 'freeze' overnight and don't freeze when left outside a mountain restaurant in sub-zero temperatures or when in contact with the snow all day or on a bitterly cold chairlift at altitude! :D

Paul, I confess that I find your actions to be reprehensible.I have previously posted on J2ski, that I allow my butler to wax my skis. Of course he is a level 4 waxer, one would not expect any less.

And then I do allow my butler to hoist the skis on my shoulder, but I insist, at great personal sacrifice, on carrying my own skis.

One benefit is that it allows the butler time to get on with his normal menial duties, such as dusting my spare ski poles,

We have a duty to look after our people.

Sniff.
