January trip in jeopardy

So Mrs H has managed to break a bone in her foot, the big toe to be precise, and not just break it but shatter it. This was2 weeks ago, with 8 weeks until our January trip. The consultant told her the bone should be ok to ski on in terms of safety, but will be painful. Mrs H is not convinced it will have healed by the time the trip comes around. Theres 8 of us going.

Heres the problem:

* does she pull out now and run the risk of being fit?

* does she wait until much nearer and if the hospital finally say shes unfit to travel, cancel and claim on the insurance?

* if she pulls out, should I as well, bearing in mind insurance only covers the injured person who cannot travel if a doctor says so?

* do I book an additional week later in the season if she has to pull out? (I am liking this option)

Bones can heal as slow or as fast as they like, theres no rule, especially with such a ridiculously crucial bone as the big toe, which lest we forget is vital to initiating a turn!!!!!

2 weeks ago I was thinking everything would be fine, and she'd be ok to travel, now I am not so sure.

Any advice?

:(

Re:January trip in jeopardy

Oh dear, Tony, how unlucky for your poor wife :(

How much does it hurt her now? Can she walk on it? Has it improved in the last 2 weeks?

If you remember, I broke one of my big toes IN a ski boot, and carried on ski-ing for a couple of days afterwards, because I didn't know it was broken at the time. Mind you, mine wasn't shattered, it was a straightforward break.

January trip in jeopardy

Ouch... well, firstly, get well soon Mrs.H! 8)

Tony_H wrote:* if she pulls out, should I as well, bearing in mind insurance only covers the injured person who cannot travel if a doctor says so?

Check with your insurer; this varies a lot. We had to cancel a holiday when my son tore an achilles tendon - bit of a downer when going cycling! The insurers were ace though and covered everything for the whole family without quibble.

They might not be so keen if you're going with a big (non-family) group but I'd have thought spouse of injured party would be covered at least.

Answers to the rest of your questions may depend on the above but I'd recommend booking another holiday anyway, just in case... and then you might end up with two.

Re:January trip in jeopardy

I agree with Admin, check with your insurers as may / should be able to cancel the pair of you and claim (less excess).
The other 6 however will very unlikely be able to claim though....
If CAN claim, I'd go later in the season.
Ps not great though if you do have to cancel, but at least you should still get some piste in during the season.
Re:January trip in jeopardy

Tony,
my insurance policy says that I have to inform them if there is a change in my health. Have you told your insurers about your wife's toe?

When I broke my shoulder on the dry ski slope 10 years ago our insurers would have paid me back not just for my holiday but for my 2 kids as well, if I'd decided to cancel the holiday for the 3 of us.

Re:January trip in jeopardy

We have been ina similar situation. My good lady broke her leg at the end of one October. She was in plaster for four weeks, and six weeks later we were due to go skiing. She would not entertain any discussion, we were to go.

As it happens, she skied, (really well, as ever, :( ), but she did suffer some pain. She just skied at her own speed, finished early, if needed, and it worked OK. Her philosophy was, "if I can't ski, I will sit on the balcony and read a book". Don't know what I saw in her, really.

Nowadays, she has a much more serious condition, and has to be far more careful than a broken leg.
Re:January trip in jeopardy

I think unless you have an option of moving the trip later in the year, you should all go. Being in the mountains is great in any case. I spend quite a few weekends on crutches last season, it sucked not to be able to ski, but I would rather take a gondola every morning and sit on terrace with a book enjoying the scenery than stay in town during the ski season. Also made myself useful in the chalet, getting dinner ready etc., and going to apres ski with my friends knowing that we don't need to watch shops closing times.

If the insurance will only cover Mrs H then absolutely you should go, i'm sure she'll understand....in fact come to think of it, you should go regardless, there's only a limited number of weeks we in this country get to ski :)
p.s. fingers crossed her toe heals in time (see what I did there....toe...heals :) )

I'll get my coat.....

Re:January trip in jeopardy

Oh no Tony that's awful. I really feel your pain (well yours wife's really). I would wait a little longer before making a decision. The very worse thing would be to cancel and then find she is ok to go. I'm sure insurance would cover you as well as you wouldn't expect your partner to go on hols without you. After missing our trip last Jan I'm getting a bit jittery myself about going. Wishing Mrs H a very sppedy recovery.

Re:January trip in jeopardy

Perhaps you can buy her a sledge?

But in all seriousness, sorry to hear of your predicament. I do hope she recovers enough to go on the hol and enjoy it.
If it was me I would be devastated. Ski hols mean more to me than any any type of hol so a scenario like yours would provide a real predicament (ski hol, divorce, divorce, ski hol, hmmmmmm).

Good luck.

Re:January trip in jeopardy

Thanks guys.
Mrs h has changed from saying she's defo not going and neither should I, to going full circle and saying she will go come what may, read a book, etc.
In my heart of hearts I know she wouldn't want to go on ski holiday and not ski, I certainly wouldn't.
The other 6 will go come what may,I will not have any other option there, but if she is unfit to go my dilemma will become to worrying about me instead of her. Joking aside, I'd hate to miss a trip, but I'd also hate to think of her sat at home feeling miserable.
Anyway, it's given me some things to think about.

The interesting one is insurance, ally saying about informing them if your health changes. With a break surely your health only changes once the doctor says YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SKI which will be 23 December if it's going to happen.....

Anyway. Fingers and toes crossed.

Tony

Very sorry to hear about Mrs H. Hopefully, she will make a quick and full recovery and you will be able to get away as planned.

Just one thought: if it is still 8 weeks out, you may not be fully committed financially to all costs of the holiday so insurers might not want to cover some of the costs if you pull out later having paid for everything

Hope it all works out. In the meantime, I think you should definitely look for another trip later in the season. Even if it works out as a bonus week, I am sure you will cope

Tony, obviously I don't know what your insurance policy says, but mine is quite clear about this. It's in writing and they also confirmed it on the phone. This is what mine (annual snowsports insurance from the Ski Club of GB) says:

You should call medical screening service on *** if:

• you need to declare a medical condition;
• you develop a medical condition after your policy was issued;
• your existing condition changes after your policy was issued;
• you are unsure whether a medical condition needs to be declared or not.
The confidential helpline will be able to confirm if cover can be provided for your medical condition(s). If we are able to cover your medical conditions(s), an additional premium may be payable. If you need to make a claim arising from a medical condition that has not been declared and accepted by us, it is unlikely that your claim will be paid.
Each person insured by us would still be covered for any unrelated medical condition(s) and other sections of cover subject to the terms and conditions of this policy.
2 You will not be covered
a if you travel against the advice of a doctor

Re:January trip in jeopardy

Tony, Dec 23 2012, I broke Tib & Fib boarding, and had planned to travel to Mauritius some 3 weeks later in Jan 2013. Consultant at Hospital in UK said there was no way he would give me a fit to fly certificate, despite the obvious fact that I'd flown back to UK from Austria. I informed Travel insurance Co and also went and saw my GP. I had to pay an extra premium for Mauritius flights, GBP12:00 if I recall correctly. I visited GP who checked all my notes, X-rays, etc and then wrote me a letter saying I could fly, and the main risk was DVT which we had discussed, and I went and bought very fetching DVT stockings for flights. (GP Letter cost me GBP25:00). I also went and bought one of those waterproof rubber cast boots, and managed to self physio by spending time walking in the swimming pool every day, worked wonders. I would suggest you check the small print under medical paragraph of Airlines rules. Given that your OH big toe should be well on way to recovery after 10 weeks, I wouldn't think insurance would stop you flying. As for you're OH actually skiing, I guess that's a bit of suck it and see, pain relief gel can be a godsend, and lasts for a few hours. Have you considered a visit to your nearest ski slope to gauge how if goes? Adrenaline while skiing can also help by focussing the mind on something other than pain. Anyway, really hope that you both manage to travel and enjoy the mountains, and hope OH big toe recovers fully.

Check your insurance and then go for it! 10 weeks should be ok albeit a little painful. Plenty of pain relief and some of the good old falling down water should do the trick. Have fun

Just to add best wishes for Mrs H's recovery.

I guess there is no right answer, for some of us just being in the mountains and not skiing would be second best but still great, for others, it means nothing unless you are sliding down the mountain on a couple of boards.

I can imagine the hardest part with a foot injury might be getting ski boots on and off unless you have some rear-entry boots.

I got knocked off my bike yesterday by an idiot who suddenly decided to turn left into a carpark without indicating and landed very heavily on my chest:evil:.

The ridiculous thing was one of my first thoughts was "this could ruin my ski trip in January" Just goes to show how obsessed we are

Thankfully, a trip to the ER confirmed that nothing was broken and no sign of any other significant problems. So apart from rather painful internal bruising, I should be fine after a few days .

Anyway, hope Mrs H is recovering well and that you will be able to travel Tony.

Best wishes for the Christmas season.

Re:January trip in jeopardy

Thanks everyone for their good wishes and comments. As far as insurance goes, Mrs H would be covered in full should she not be fit to travel, that was always the case and never in question. Ally I appreciate your insurance comments, but its really not relevant as Mrs H will get her money back if the hospital sign her off again.
The big question is should I still go if she doesnt? We have had discussions on this and she tells me I should 100% go, after all theres little else I could do by not going, apart from taking more income in from my business.
So Monday 23rd is D Day at the fracture clinic. If they say NO she cant go, we cancel her holiday - I think shes resigned to this, and ready should it happen, although shes not the sit down and rest type so another month or so will drive her insane!
Should they say its healed, then we've got 2.5 weeks to get her ski fit and through the pain barrier so she can enjoy her usual fast paced ski week without having to bail out or cut days short.
Fingers crossed.....

I don't know whether to be angry with the hospital for missing the damage first time round or impressed that they conduct a review of all X-rays to make sure everything is alright. In any event, my January ski trip is definitely off   .

Hopefully, I will be full recovered in time for the February mid-term trip. I might also have to have a look at a late season long weekend to compensate

Re:January trip in jeopardy

That's bad news for you wanderer, I've had a collapsed lung before and it can be serious and very painful, life threatening in fact. Hopefully yours will re inflate on its own otherwise you're in for a really tough time. Fingers crossed for you.

Meanwhile, the sun has shone on mrs h and her toe has healed sufficiently for the hospital to this morning confirm she will be ok to return to work and to ski in January.

I now have just over 2 weeks to get her fit!!!

Re:January trip in jeopardy

PrivateBryan, very harsh but true. Leave it as late as you can to see if Mrs H can make it, but have a sub replacement on standby who might get a cheapie. That way she can still possibly make it, you still get to go what ever the case. :-)

Pah! Ski fit.....

I've been trying to get 'ski fit' for years and never really got there. Fit or not you can still have a ball and ski till you drop.
As for the pain, a few sherbets at lunch time will sort that along with a handful of Nurofen.
Go and have fun.

I used to think along similar lines, but having tried in the past 3 years to lose the little bit of timber I put on and keep fit at a gym, I found a profound improvement in both my ski fitness and recovery afterwards - no aches or pains and I wasnt stiff the next morning either (fnarr fnarr).
I also dont have more than a shandy at lunchtime as I believe drinking clouds your judgement, its similar to drinking and driving IMO, but I do like a few straight off the slopes for a catch up of the days events and sampling the atmosphere.
Nurofen just rots your guts. I prefer to take a tube of muscle and joint gel (no profen in that, just natural remedies) which works a treat if you massage it in before you ski and before you go to bed. About GBP10 a tube from Eve Taylor London.

Sounds to me like you maybe dont have the will power to get ski fit Snapzzz?
