The Crash Reel

Just finished watching The Crash Reel on Sky Atlantic, a documentary film following USA pro snowboarder Kevin Pearce as he recovered from traumatic brain injury after a horrific half pipe accident. What a truly brilliant piece of film making.
Even if you have no interest in snow boarding the film will grip you. It's a portrait of the risks and the price paid by some of those participating in extreme sports.
A thoroughly recommended watch.

Watched it last night and watching it again now with my son. As you say it's a brilliant documentary.

Couldnt agree more, incredible piece of work. The guy is incredibly driven. Its also made me think for the first time about buying a helmet. Great soundtrack too.

Well, you know I have always banged on about freedom of choice and all that, and I have always been well aware of the potential dangers, but never really felt like I needed to. However watching this film made me feel like I would be being disrespectful to Kevin, and ultimately other people who have suffered similar trauma.

I just watched this on catch up. The bravery shown by that family with everything thatt they have had to contend with is astonishing. Kevin's Down Syndorme brother was the star of the show.

The dedication of these athletes who go and do these amazing things, knowing the risks the take, is humbling.

Like TonyH says (and Kudos to you Tony for having an open mind) - anyone who watches this will see a different side of the helmet debate (I'm not trying to open up a wibble discussion, contentious or not - simply stating a fact). Some of the crashes shown from Shaun White etc that show the helmet being thrown off the head by the impact make you shudder to think what would happen without the helmet there in the first place

A brilliant film - see it now!

Yes... actually quite scary in the past few years to see the number of riders in the parks who think it's cool to have the helmet straps undone / very loose...

If you're going to bother with a lid, do the bloody straps up! :twisted:

Shows the Shaun White crash - thankfully he gets straight up BUT if that impact was enough to send his helmet shooting yards away from him then what would it have done to his head had the helmet not been there!?

Amazing program, watched it last night with my GF - Kevin's brother with Downs was a star telling Kevin straight. What an amazing family too.
Kevin's father said something tho that I disagreed with - unlike some sports I don't watch to see them fall / crash etc, I watch to see the skills and talent and bravery of them all.
The helmet debate will go on, but personal choice will be influenced by others actions and 'incidents' and this film will I believe change some peoples minds.

Yes I agree, I was shocked when Dad said people watch to see the falls - I certainly never do.

This is a good point Admin.

Airhead park and pipers are so desperate to follow the latest fashion of wearing the helmet perched like a pea on a mountain above some branded headwear that they forget it is actually worn as a safety feature!!!

You forget most of them are contractually obliged to show off said brand, not that it should change matters of course
