Austria in mid-December?

Hello,

I am planning a skiing trip to Austria 15th December and need advice on the best place to aim for. I will be driving down there, I am looking for lots of Blue runs, some livelyness in the evening and snow in the resort.

Any tips please?

Yes... wait and see!

As you're driving, and it's (very) early season you can afford to wait and see where the snow falls. Gives you plenty of time to look at options too.

How long is your trip? If only a week then you'll not have any problem finding good accommodation that week. Also worth looking out for early season offers on lift passes, hotels, etc. - many resorts do "opening week specials" and such like.

If your trip is extending over Xmas then you'll need to book ahead, of course, but having the car gives you lots of flexibility.

Look at the Ski Jewel / Ski Welt (large interconnected area with the worlds most confusing piste map 8) ), maybe Lech (evening liveliness might be pricey) or (what Tony said) Mayrhofen.

Obergurgl ticks a lot of the boxes,its high,good intermediate runs and lively apres at the semi famous neiderhutte.The resort usually opens back end of November.
On the downside,very little going on in the village itself and its mainly all four star hotels although the time of year you want to go you would get an apartment

Ive been going to Lech/Zurs/St Anton every Dec for the last 7 years or so. Always go about the 12/13 Dec and never yet been disappointed on snow. BUT as Admin says - wait and see. Season opens on 6 Dec. Last year it was all green grass until 3 Dec and I was starting to panic but then suddenly it dumped and continued for a week. By 12 Dec everything was open and had a fantastic time. Obertauern over near Salzburg also has a good reputation for early season snow.

I have friends who gambled in the summer and are off to Reutte next week. Doesn't look too clever at the moment. Anyone have any good/bad news about conditions I can pass on?

Keith,

We are just back from 4 days in Stubaital. We stayed in Neustift, still snow in the valley and enough on the glacier. Conditions were perfect, a couple of degrees below zero and blue blue skies. None of the Stubai villages are party central, but being Austria there is still a good time to be had.

The debates continue, but Austria is still special for skiing, especially in the build up to Christmas.

Have fun and be safe wherever you go.
