Re:Post holiday blues

I spend a lot of time in the Austrian Alps and this feels different because it is sunny place and spring in the mountains makes people feel, 'great winter, the skiing mood melts away with the snow, now time for climbing (for the daring), use the lifts for downhill mountain biking (scary), regular mountainbiking for the fit, motorbiking for the mid-life crisis, dinghy sailing and windsurfing on lakes (and from July, some lovely high-altitude lakeside beaches), rollerblading among keen skiiers, and walking in the mountains (sometimes using ski lifts part way), often using nordic poles, for almost everyone. You can visit a mountain hut on a sunny day, miles from any public road, and it is packed with families, pensioners, fit young cyclists, everyone really. Lots of locals, lots of Germans, a handful of Brits too. The one thing you don"t get in the Alps is real sea beaches and yacht sailing. Also sun is not quite as guaranteed as in the Costas, but is often sunny, and always the amazing feeling of the mountains.

My top tip > if you love skiing give your favourite mountain resort a chance in summer.

Re:Post holiday blues

Yes Ewan, badly. I do ridiculous things like look at the weather where ive just been or find someone I know who is going after me and pester them to tell me how it is when theyre out there......

I even made a silly video which was to melancholy music and all about "leaving" the ski resort.

Pathetic, i know.

But I find I wipe the season like a slate, and look forward to the summer with some sun in Greece hopefully to come in September, and by that time I should have a pretty good idea where at least 1 ski trip will be for next season. Like Ian said, its great to look forward......

Re:Post holiday blues

Totally! I've checked the webcams every day since I got back from St Gervais Mont Blanc two weeks ago to see what the conditions are like! Fortunately, I live in Scotland and have been able to get a bit more skiing in since I came back. You should, perhaps, try a weekend up in Scotland, the conditions are great just now. I was in Glenshee this weekend and it was like being back in the Alps, great snow and blue skies.

Re:Post holiday blues

I suffer from this well-known medical condition and the only cure that works is to plan another sneaky trip before the end of the season. With no intention of going, obviously...

This, of course, I did but then lost control and actually booked it!

So, off to Engelberg on April 9 for four nights!

Re:Post holiday blues

Yes. Its clinical name is PSD (Post skiing depression)

Symptoms include all the usual symptoms of depression but with some quirks. For example, while depression normally entails high degrees of lethargy and inertia, PSD sufferers tend to fill their days with longing reviews of webcams, websites, pictures, videos and anything associated with snow. The net effect is the same - nothing productive gets done  Sufferers have also been known to turn into the most frightful bores for a period, though thankfully this usually passes reasonably quickly

There is no known cure though planning future trips, even if they are only sun holidays, does appear to help a little.

Also group counselling through this forum does also alleviate symptoms a little.

Re:Post holiday blues

Well, I'm suffering from this condition even more than usual this season, as my first - and last trip of the season - was before Christmas. I fell, hurt my knee and head. Knee recovered, but I must wait until next season before skiing again, I'm told. So, three days this season, was my lot :(. Still, having fun planning next season, and will be aiming to make up for all the skiing I'll have missed this year !

Re:Post holiday blues

Sorry to hear about injury. Is hurting the head a +1 for helmets?

Plenty of fresh snow in the Alps still. Season is not over. I am of for a nifty weekend of two days skiing tomorrow, to keep the season going. I am lucky to have a place to stay and my own skis and season pass so it is only flight cost, but still a somewhat expensive indulgence when you book flights late. I just bought skis from a guy who told me he is doing a coach trip to Meribel next week. When it is snowing in London (as today) it is too early to call the end of season! But sadly it is not always possible to find time and /or money to make the most of it.
