Does anyone use knee support?

My knees are generally weak (trouble getting up to standing from kneeling etc) and have early signs of arthritis ( tho a physio told me they shouldn't hurt as much as they do so don't quite understand why)
I thought wearing some kind of leg/knee support would be a good idea when skiing. I don't want them so rigid I can't bend to sit down on a chair lift.
Any ideas or experience with them?

Re:Does anyone use knee support?

I use a knee support as fell two years ago and damaged the ligaments around the knee as it tends to twist if you fall with skis on. One with adjustable straps is what I would recommend.
As for aching in my experience it's the thighs that have a tendency to ache especially if you're not very active on a day to day basis. Although saying that I find by the third day that's completely gone. Hope this helps

I use knee supports on both knees, but I am thinking about changing to those bands that go round underneath the knee, they are supposed to stop knee pain.
The only tip I can give you is try to turn light and control the amount of pressure that you put on the knee 8)

Re:Does anyone use knee support?

Cheer Ian and ooermiss

I just ordered these:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Neo-MEDICAL-PATELLA-SUPPORT-breathable/dp/B001M04WVK/ref=lh_ni_t?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A29AYWQBJN6V5G
which are Neo G MEDICAL GRADE OPEN PATELLA KNEE SUPPORT 'breathable design'

The many reviews looked good and i didn't want one with side metal rods where I couldn't sit on a ski lift.

I also ordered Treat your own Knee Arthritus by Jim Johnson...sadly about ten years too late for me but ho hum....

Word of caution to younger skiers with ANY twinges in ya knees - treat it now!! (to add to list of things of 'What I wish I could've told my 20 year old self'!!) I had sore-ish knees after every ski season for the last 15 years which recovered nicely over the summer each time. Then one year it didn't (recover), stayed the same for years (bearable and no real problem hence i didnt fret) and this winter it's just gone down a notch..ever so slightly but so you'd notice.

O whoops.... I just remembered my new year's resolution was not to talk about my health haha. Well I'll leave this on in the hope it'll help someone else be more sensible than I was.

Re:Does anyone use knee support?

You might find this article by Dr Mike Langran a GP and ski patrol doctor at CairnGorm Mountain interesting http://www.ski-injury.com/specific-injuries/knee unfortunately he fails to mention that women skiers are almost twice as likely to suffer a knee injury as men. A woman's knee ligaments are about 20% weaker than those of a similar sized man.

Re:Does anyone use knee support?

My husband has used one (or occasionally 2) of the supports you have ordered for the past few years for both skiing and walking (which surprisingly seems to cause him more trouble). He's found them to be really good and comfortable (wears over his thermals for skiing).

No idea what he actually did to his knee but woke up one morning with a bit of pain and next day he could hardly walk. Specialist said general wear and tear as no specific damage was found. Physio exercises have helped a lot so may be worth a try? I'm sure someone more qualified can suggest a couple as not exactly sure what he does and for what purpose.
Re:Does anyone use knee support?

Interestingly I ruptured my ACL whilst wearing a knee brace (one on each knee for warmth vs any specific worries about my knees). The first few times skiing again I have worn no protection and had always stated would not wear one. There are some significant downsides with regards to proprioception. Have to admit am now seriously considering investing in something substantial as believe would significantly reduce the chances of hyperextension
