Snowboarding is a dying breed? - Thoughts

OK. There has always been banter between skiers and boarders about which is the most sensible - GOATS v DOS (as my mate calls us D***s on sticks).

But, joking apart - is boarding a dying breed?

The reason I ask this? I went to see a guy last week to have my boots re-fitted (as recommended on this forum - Graham at Rivington Alpine). I asked him why he does not sell any boarding gear. He said it is not selling these days.

We had a laugh.

He said, seriously that is the case. He was saying many boarders these days tend to be over the age of 35 - those that started when it was "cool". IT is no longer that "cool" so they are not buying the gear. He can sell so much more ski gear. The shop was a very nice and tempting shop. He also does a bloody good job at fixing boots!

My girlfriend is swapping from boarding to skiing this season (she saw sense at last - the thumb screws might have helped). Is this going to be a trend?

Thoughts?

Re:Snowboarding is a dying breed? - Thoughts

For a couple of years the number of people in Freance having snowboard lessons has been dropping, while the number having ski lessons has stayed static.
Not a dying breed but not the 'in thing' anymore either. Ski technology has caught up and probably passed the point where boarding was scene as the cutting edge part of snow sports.

Re:Snowboarding is a dying breed? - Thoughts

I've always thought skiing was cooler than boarding, although SOME of the boarding fashion is nicer than the straight up and down traditional ski gear.

Boarders hurt themselves more, fact. They also cause more problems on piste, fact. They also make a mess on lifts, fact.

However i do think a good boarder off piste looks amazing.

Death of the hill frogs?
No big deal ;-)

Re:Snowboarding is a dying breed? - Thoughts

You forgot to add that boarders trash the powder far quicker than skiers.

Love your graphic Snapzzz - spot on.

Boarding for ski manufacturers to look at skis. They reshaped them and made skiing easier. They also made skis that enable their users to pull bigger and better tricks than the boarders can, so making skiing cooler than boarding.

5 years ago, snow parks would have been almost skier free zones. Now they are dominated by skiers.

Add in being able to get around a resort without walking, and not spending half your day sat on your backside just under the lip of a roller.......

Re:Snowboarding is a dying breed? - Thoughts

I get confused at the amount of boarders who just seem to sit in the MIDDLE of a slope all day. Is that what they hit the slopes for?

Very few of them seem to actually know what they are doing. The good ones are great, and of course we all need to learn....but why rest in dangerous places? Anyway, rant over.......

Agreed, and it is frustrating. But in Tignes it was unreal just how many snowboarders did it....a far higher proportion, including 1 sleeping just over the dip on a red, right in the middle!!!!

Don't get many skiers sitting on the lee side of a lip, but boarders seem to do that a lot!

That said, few skiers or boarders seem to know the 'skiers' code, and have any idea as to where they should stop safely.

It may reflect the resorts we choose to go to, but I think the standard of boarding is really good generally - however, I still don't get on a chairlift with a boarder unless it is my son!!

Perhaps the reasons you see less goats on the piste is that they tend to congregate in the snow park? I say lets build one hugh 'stash' in the pyrenees and see them gone for good.
Thats sick.

Re:Snowboarding is a dying breed? - Thoughts

I always thought it was a matter of age, the younger crowd opting for boards while the older crowd going for skis. Snowboarding seemed to be the winter equivalent to Surfing and skateboarding which attracted a younger portion of the population. But then I am totally new to snow sports so it's pretty much an outsiders view.

Re:Snowboarding is a dying breed? - Thoughts

I regularly go end of January with a group of 20 mixed ability skiers. This year in westondorf there were 10 of us (including some of the not so confident skiers) when we came across a very icy red and I noticed even the Austrians wobbled for a second!

My friend avoided a skier and went over the edge and down a pure ice ravine towards the wood she tumbled for a minute at least and lay still in the distance. Another friend was about to go the same way when a snowboarder came in front of her to slow her down then his mate took over and stopped her dead when he dug in.

My view on snowboarders changed that day - btw the first faller was very lucky with just bruises and got up to ski to the end of the slope she got balls that girl.

Anymore than 6 in a group was often referred to as a tw@t of boarders in my day.

Having returned from the dark side, I can see both sides of the story, I'm much happier on skis now and for the first time in 5 years I didn't say 'I might hire a board this week' when I was on holiday - I never do, I enjoy my skiing too much now.

A lot of the staff in our hotel were young trendy little things, and they were all skiiers which surprised me. I think a lot of it's down to the technology changing and the introduction of twin tips and snow parks no longer just being a boarders only park.

Everyone can enjoy the mountain as they want, funnily enough I saw the return of quite a few scooters in La Plagne

It's an ever evolving sport I guess.

The problem with boards is it gets flat in places!

Snow boards certainly changed the ethos of ski making and transformed skiing. Mind you, if we had mountains in England you wonder what some of the F1 teams would do to ski design.

Re:Snowboarding is a dying breed? - Thoughts

There are definitely more skiers than snowboarders now than it was 6-7 years ago. Some boarders in our group switched back to skiing. I think it's due to advances in ski technology. Main advantage of snowboards was in powder, but modern skis made powder skiing easier. Main disadvantage of snowboards are not even flats, but bumpy narrow traverses that are often inevitable if you want to get to an interesting terrain and powder stashes. And this disadvantage remains. We skied Col des Mines over the busy period and traffic on a traverse meant that boarders (and they are all of a very good standard) just couldn't make it and had to drop in to Vallon d'Arby side. For skiers the traverse is a lesser problem, even when it's so busy so that you can't get to a good speed to clear all dips and rises, you can always side step. As for sitting in the middle of the piste skiers do it too, they just stand, not sit, but I guess many of them would if they could - it's just easier on a board:)

Just back from La Thuile......def not many boarders around although I skied with 2.

I am also helping to organise a school trip for 16-18 year olds. We have 40+ interested and no boarders among them. A few years ago I would have expected 25% to be GAYS but when I asked they just said it was not COOL any more 'cause you can do more and better on planks!! -)

Boarding is pretty cool and certainly when someone can carve on snow board looks amazing. As split boards become more common I would expect a mini revival. Main problem with boarders is same with skiers, give up lessons too early.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CiWweqZdS3A

Jesus christ you people need to take a look at what you are actually posting. A thread has been created to form an opinion of others regarding the decline of a snowsport and all you have done in MOAN about snowboarding like you own the mountains. To be honest you all have valid points regarding snowboarders sitting down to rest, I have never seen anyone on skis stop to rest in the middle of a run, or carve a decent run in to moguls because they are unable to control their speed correctly.

This is the problem with skiing and snowboarding, everyone seems to think they have a divine right to the mountain as if they own it. News flash you don't, so why not just enjoy your skiing experience like everyone else and stop the negativity towards other forms of sport just because you don't enjoy it/understand it.

Also regarding the images of snowboarders sat under lifts in groups. Strong possibility they are sat at the top of a park run awaiting turn. If you check parks runs today you will find those piles of people are actually weighted towards skiers.

Apologies (monday morning) rant over

Re:Snowboarding is a dying breed? - Thoughts

Out of all the people I know who like snow time, only 2 of them board, if that's relevant.
One of them spends more time on snow than most of us on here put together, and is a thoroughly decent chappy who I had the privilege to meet in Austria a few years ago and have kept in touch with since. We share a love of the snow covered mountains, and have had some banter about skiers vs boarders, but its totally good natured.
The other hasn't been on a snow holiday for several years now sadly, but is desperate to go again. If only his wife would stop breeding ;-)
Again, we enjoy good natured banter, but share the same love.

I'm surprised anyone has got upset or annoyed with this thread, as it has covered off a couple of relevant issues, and also shown how good natured the banter can be from skiers.

I've said before, seeing a good boarder in powder looks fantastic. I'd love to be able to pick it up and be good at it but I don't want to be a beginner again and go through the pain of learning from scratch. Otherwise I'd probably have a go at it and do both.........without stopping over the brow of a hill of course ;-)

Re:Snowboarding is a dying breed? - Thoughts

I ski, and i snow baord. when the snow is soft, snow boarding is better. when its icy i'd take either. When it is slushy boarding is better. off piste in pow pow, boarding is so much better than i cant even begin to descibe to a skier what it feels like.

This post isnt meant to annoy skiers or poke fun, becuase there is nothing like carving down at speed. I just hope that it motivates someone, at least one person, to take up baording so that they can feel that undescibable feeling of floating down the mountian on pow pow.
Re:Snowboarding is a dying breed? - Thoughts

I very rarely visit this forum but through following a new topic that was sent to my email box I came across this topic about snowboarders. I have been skiing for many years and thoroughly loved it but my husband who is younger than me wanted a go at snowboarding. At the time I was 57 years old and thought it a bit daft to be learning something that looked pretty dangerous but gave it a go anyway. It was the most difficult thing I have ever tried but I perservered and after many very painful falls I started to enjoy it once I got the hang of it. Now when we go on our holidays I actually find skiing rather boring and end up boarding most of the holidays as it is more challenging and more fun. I am a 62 year old woman now and probably don't have many years left as a boarder, but I will always be pleased that I gave it a go and somewhat mastered it.

Re:Snowboarding is a dying breed? - Thoughts

If I'd taken up skiing or snowboarding as a teenager I'd have boarded as I used to skateboard but got persuaded to try skiing in my early 40's by a mate who was a ski instructor so ended up skiing.

Still tempted to have a go on a board but experience tells me that when it gets flat you are stuffed where the skiers have the benefit of poles. That and the injury stats are double for boarders.

I think the "rivalry" concept is a bit yesterday and slope etiquette has deteriorated all round so skiers are as bad as boarders.
