Resorts you haven't been to but should

I've got this wish list of places I want to ski, some of which I've been lucky enough to have done already.
But there's also a number of places I've looked at and put lower down the pecking order due to things I've read or been told, often things like access time to the slopes, queues, busy pistes etc.

But

I'm wondering whether I'm wrong and that these places should be investigated, especially as so many people rave on about how amazing they are.

So; I have 2 lists here. The first is places I've read about that I want to visit in the foreseeable future, the second a list of resorts I keep being told I should ski.

Anyone got any views on either list, in particular the 2nd list?

List 1; wish list

Dolomites - val Gardena/arabba/selva
Bad gastein
Ischgl
Solden
Cervinia
Crans Montana
Val d'Isere
Schladming

List 2; places I'm told to visit
Saalbach
Tignes
Meribel
Morzine
Zermatt
Wengen
Soll
Ski welt
Ski amade
Obergurgl

Not too sure at the mo ..... never really throught of The Kronplatz as a place to ski, I think i would rather be more into the dolomites than the Brenta D's, so at the moment I am not saying no but I have to convince her in doors that a J2ski ski holiday is the place to be.
Little W is not too bothered where she skis but her in doors may need some convincing.

Re:Resorts you haven't been to but should

OK. Just to set the ball rolling, here's my 'two- pennorth' on your List 2.

Saalbach: interests me, but never managed to find it for the 'right' money.

Tignes: Do it!

Meribel: can't put my finger on why 3V has never appealed. Might have a better idea when I return from VT in April.

Morzine: been to PdS once. Spent most of the time in Chatel, Avoriaz and over the Swiss border. A brilliant ski-area Night-life can be a bit erm... 'French' though  .

Zermatt: Would love to!

Wengen: as above (but not as much as Zermatt.)

Soll/Skiwelt: Big area, nothing too challenging. Would go back with family like a shot. Great value, so would also do it as a cheaper, second trip.

Ski Amade: would do it as a DIY job. Cheap flights to Salzburg and hire a car, which I think would be needed to get around. Otherwise, stay in Gastein, which I think is part of the area.

Obergurgl: would rather go to Solden (next door) or Serfaus.

I'll be the first to admit that my negative thoughts on Meribel and Obergurgl are, to some extent, pre-conceived. I look forward to people who have had great times there 'putting me right'.

Wow! Big response to this one. Not exactly set the ball rolling, Have I?

Re:Resorts you haven't been to but should

I kind of get the impression after reading your reports that you like skiing something different every day and a bit of a challenge. I don't think you personally would get that in Soll/ Skiwet having already been to so many other resorts, may be wrong about that. Can't speak for any of the other places. We have got into a terrible rut of always going to same place/hotel. Mainly because of cost and because we always have such a great time and are scared we may not enjoy somewhere else as much. Mad I know! After this years disappointment am determined to go more than once and somewhere different.

Yes I guess you're right. I don't like feeling I'm skiing the same runs over and over which is why obergurgl isn't on the first list as I know its a limited area.

I'd also get very bored going to the same hotel and resort over and over, although we did visit mayrhofen 6 times in 12 years. I can see why people stick with something they feel suits them though.

Maybe I over analyse things and read too much rather than just take the plunge and go to some of these places. And I can honestly say there's only 1 place I have been to for a ski holiday that I would not want to go back to ever again. All of the others I'd revisit happily, in particular verbier where I've only skied a week with my daughter and would love to take mrs h. Even sauze I'd go back to but only after a big dump of fresh snow.

OK Tony, for what they are worth, here are my thoughts on your List 1.

Dolomites: Awesome. Do it soon!

Bad Gastein: Yes please!

Ischgl: Must do it soon (before I'm the 'oldest swinger in town').

Solden: See Ischgl.

Cervinia: Possibly a way to ski Zermatt 'on the cheap'. Fraught with danger if the lifts aren't open, although I can think of plenty worse places to be 'stuck' for a week. :-)

Crans Montana: Must read up.

Val d'Isere: Depends on how much more it's gonna cost than Tignes. -)

Schladming: Yes please! shares the same space on my wishlist as Bad Gastein.

Re:Resorts you haven't been to but should

Tony,
Why is Val d'Isere in one list and Tignes in the other one? I mean, they've got the same shared ski area, and when you're ski-ing you can't actually tell, from the type of run or quality of snow or anything, which area you're in.

The village of Val d'Isere is prettier than the Tignes villages (apart from Les Brevieres of course), but it's also generally more expensive.

Re:Resorts you haven't been to but should

Interesting thread - I think I've skied for a significant length of time in more than 43 resorts in my 41 years of ski trips (I've been to the same place more than once!)

But, as yet, I've never been to Chamonix, Zermatt, Verbier or the Portes du Soleil. I suppose Jackson Hole or Vail would have to be on the wish-list too. And the Dolomites.

I wouldn't bother with Obergurgl again - preferred Solden - and Whistler's mixed reputation for weather puts me off a little.

Just back from Val d'isere, awesome place, loved it. Much prettier village than Tignes with a well run frequent free shuttle bus, Val is much smaller than I thought, knowing this I would quite happily take a chalet/apartment/shoebox on the edge of town and rely more heavily on the bus to keep costs down.
If your skiing Val your skiing Tignes, I'd make a point of ending up the tignes side for lunch unless your taking a packed lunch. I got caught out first day at Tete de solaise, an average quality/size lasagne on its own with a coke and a coffee was over GBP20.

Re:Resorts you haven't been to but should

PB something going wrong there. People who don't enjoy Chamonix all fall into category of expecting something it is not. Nobody should complain about bad weather, that is what has given Chamonix almost continual powder this year. You booked a ski holiday remember. Is strange how Aosta valley is not considered disjointed but Chamonix valley is? Is just that a valley not a single ski resort. One thing I would say is key to keep looking at freezing levels because of the vertical. If it is snowing with freezing level at 1500m, no point being at Les Houches (lowest resort in valley). Need to get up high and if that means waiting 1hr or so for lift to open because has been dumping then so be it.

If anyone wants to try Chamonix properly i.e. make most of what is an amazing valley then my door is open.
I don't remember anyone saying the Aosta valley wasn't disjointed, although personally only having skied Monterosa I really couldn't comment.
My point and others I've heard about chamonix is that there are a number of areas connected by lift pass and buses all close by which you'd want to ski on a weeks holiday and that I keep being told you really need a car to do it.
I'm more than welcome to be convinced otherwise and i do appreciate there is some epic skiing to be done here.

Re:Resorts you haven't been to but should

Meribel -centre of the largest ski area in the world, with (probably) the best lift system in the world (you used to get c.30% more skiing in a day in the 3V than Espace Killy due to the quality of the lift system). Always alternative routes around if main lifts are busy, but queues usually move pretty quick. Great variety of skiing, great choice of chalets.

Val D'Isere much nicer to stay in than Tignes, one of the best ski areas in the world. Do it, but VdI rather than Tignes.

Zermatt - stunning resort, stunning scenery, some great skiing, but mega expensive lift pass! Do it.

Morzine - although fairly impressed by the PdS, I think Morzine is just too low for skiing in France. Take your waterproofs, or bite the bullet and stay up in Avoriaz.

Obergurgl - not been, but would suggest this could be your pre-Christmas warm up break. Seems to get good early snow.

Dolomites - been tempted, look great in summer, but something has always held me back. Probably an inconsistent snow record.

Never liked Cham myself...

Well, I heard these comments too. I guess people want different things from their ski holidays. generally "disjointed" is only an issue if you ski in a group of truly mixed ability and want to ski together all the same. Unless this is the case I can't see how this can be an issue - there is no way you can ski all of it in a day even if all the areas were connected. You need to decide what you are looking for in a ski holiday and go from there. If you want fast lifts, ski-in and many miles of linked flattering cruisers where everyone can look an expert - this is one thing, if you want epic terrain, magnigicient scenery and sense of achievement when you finish your ski day - go to Chamonix. Yes, you will spend time on buses, and lifts can be slow but you will be a better skier by the end of your holiday. And check weather and what's open first to avoid riding a bus to a closed area. And waiting for lifts to open on a powder day only adds to excitement. You don't need a car really, it solves the problem of buses (which are frequent) but when it's busy you may end up with a problem of parking. So figure out what you want first and then make a list of places. Vallee blanche - maybe you want to come to Cham in the summer and try walking the arete then first. If you can do the arete classic route will be easy.

We always know what we want out of a trip, and it involves maximum ski time and easy access to lifts and slopes mainly. Thats why Cham has not featured so far, and having read your comments, probably why it wont for a while yet. Maybe I will do a 3-4 day trip and try out some of the more interesting stuff when Im not looking to maximise what little time skiing I already have.
I really dont want to drive about on buses or in cars, wait for lifts to open, and have to worry about which bit is open. Not for a weeks holiday anyway. Maybe its all a bit more serious in Cham, so for people like yourself who live nearby(ish) you can go with a different attitude.

Some of our group hated it because its busy at times, and also because they felt the slopes were too difficult, but they are timid skiers and I did try to warn them beforehand that its a "serious" resort.

Whistler isn't in Europe, and therefore I'm not interested. However, with my son getting a job in the US starting June, this may change and I could be looking at skiing Colorado first.

What Bryan said on this page is what I have heard from too many people. Disjointed, aloof people, and lots of closures. I would however kill to have a crack at the Valley Blanche

Maximizing ski time is good, but skiing can be different and couple runs in one resort may be worth more in real terms than doing endless laps for 6 hours in another one. The first time ever I skied from top of Grands Montets it took me 2 hours to ski down to mid station, and it was about 40 min to get to the top. After that I did couple reds and was happy to sit down on a terrace for the rest of the day as it was my best ski day to date. Chamonix is all about skiing that's why people who go there don't care about buses and slow lifts. If it wasn't for Verbier I would be skiing in Chamonix all the time, and Verbier is the same - go up Mt. Fort and ski down to Tortin, back to Verbier side and ski down Mt Gele and you will have enough adrenaline to last you till the evening and can spend the rest of your day working on your tan if lift lines are too long t bother as it will be probably still more skiing in real terms than lapping cruisers for 6 hours.

Selva is great, some q's to get up the gondola in the morning, or a very longish steep hill to the chair, the Rhonda circuit is a great days skiing but can get tracked out, having stated in Selva I would go for a smaller resort in the area such as Arraba or if you have family Corvara seemed more family/child/beginner friendly.

I must be the odd one out as we much preferred the skiing in Tignes (plus the VDI side of Tignes) than VDI!

Having said that I am easy to please ;) and our skiing is often based on what is looking good pn a particular weekend out of the resorts that are local! Though having said that there are some Pyreneen resorts that we do not like at all but friends love (Font Romeu being one). Thankfully we are all different or we would all be skiing in the same place!!

Cervinia, dont bother as the skiing is not great and the link to Zermat is the longest drag lift ever (10 Mins!). Its a lovely town with some super restaurants but thats about it.
Meribel, it really is the best place in the 3 valleys to access the whole ski area and the lift system is so good that you can be anywhere very quickly. If you want to maxamise your skiing time and ski new runs each day its hard to beat. The town is not great with a lot of 18 year old posh kids on their gap year that are all too cool.
I did not like Chamonix for the reason already said, its a pain having to travel to each seperate are to ski even if the skiing is very good when you get there.

That's why I love La Tania, easy access to 3V, 2/3 quiet lifts to Meribel or courchevel, ski in/out , but most of all a nice traffic free little village full of genuine friendly folk, and drinks a fair bit cheaper too.
